Writing Short Stories

Classic Author Libby Drew wrote a great guest article a couple of years ago about her take on writing short stories.  Since this year's anthology is fast approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to re-feature it.

Write, Write, Write!

The deadline for the 2024 anthology is just about two weeks away, which is not too late to submit a story to the proof team!  Here are a few tips about participating in the anthology: Stories can be as short as 1,000 words The link to the theme can be tangential - it doesn't have to hit us over the head.  So, keep that in mind if the theme isn't speaking to you.  Participating in the anthology is a great way to get new readers.  A lot of people read all the anthology stories, so i

Why April?

Why did I choose April to feature the poetry anthology?  I thought it would be a perfect way to feature our site poets during National Poetry Month!  April is the month to celebrate all things poetry; so read, write, and if you're daring, participate in the NaPoWriMo writing challenge!  NaPoWriMo stands for National Poetry Writing Month. It's the sibling to NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in November.  So what is this challenge I speak of?  Simple.  Write one poem per day (30 total) dur

What's Next?

We've already completed two events this year, Carlos Hazday's tribute and the Diversity Poetry Anthology.  Our third event, Coming of Age - A Tribute to Comicality, goes live tomorrow.  So, what's next on the radar?   Or, shall I say that @Cia has a secret  One of our most popular site events is the annual Secret Author contest, where stories are voted on without the readers knowing who wrote them.  Guessing who wrote what always creates great discussion!  Details should be coming soo

Upcoming Writing Events - Reminder

GA's Secret Author contests are a fun way to participate in site activities and also to get your stories read by a wide audience.  There's plenty of time to get a story written and submitted to Cia!  Just don't tell anyone you're participating   Outside of your beta/editing team, of course.  Information can be found here: Guidelines for our annual anthology have also been released, and it's never too early to start and get your story(ies) to the proof team.  More information can be found h

Upcoming Writing Events

It's been a busy year with writing events here at GA so far.  We started with our second tribute to Carlos Hazday - Auld Lang Syne, and continued with our annual Poetry Anthology - Diversity, followed by a tribute to a GA icon, Comicality - Coming of Age.  A favorite of both authors and reader is the annual Secret Author contest, which just concluded.   Now it's time to focus on the annual Anthology - Creature Feature, which is due on October 1st.  Guidelines can be found here:  I've

Upcoming Writing Events

Stay tuned for this year's anthology - In too Deep!  While the team works behind the scenes to get everything ready for posting, I thought it would be a good idea to reveal what's next on the agenda.   The Prompt Team is excited to announce our first prompt team event, which will take place in November.  Be sure to check out Friday's blog for more information.  We will be honoring our beloved late friend Carlos Hazday by again featuring stories/poems/memories in his honor on Janu

Upcoming Site Events

Now that the poetry anthology is behind us, it's time to look forward to what's next.  Last week, Cia announced the forbidden secret author contest.   No, it's not forbidden to participate - just to announce that you're participating     We also have our annual anthology, with two themes this year, Horizons and Unspoken.   We'll round off the year with our annual Prompt Team event - details will be revealed later this year.   Should we make it a contest to see w

Upcoming Events Reminder

First, I'd like to wish all our American members a very Happy Thanksgiving!  I will be spending the day at my aunt's, stuffing my face with turkey and all the sides   I'd be perfectly happy with a plate full of stuffing and gravy, though.  🤤 I am thankful for everyone who makes this site as awesome as it is!  I'm also thankful for everyone who participates in site events, such as the anthologies and other contests run throughout the year.     Speaking of site events, we have two

Under Construction

Best laid plans... I've been working on an anthology blog post for the past couple of weeks, and every time I sit down to work on it, something seems to pull me away.    So of course, it happened again tonight, but in a good way.  I'm writing this on Wednesday night, 6/12, which also happens to be my birthday 🎂Without going into all the details, my day did not go according to plan.  What started out as an aggravating day turned into a much better one.  I had originally planned on stopping at the

Two Weeks!

There are just two weeks left to get stories sent to me for the Proof Team to review.  From the selection I've read so far, this is going to be a great anthology! The Proof Team has been hard at work, but we're always eager for more, so keep sending me your creatures to feature!   Hmmm... maybe something a bit scarier? Nah... scarier.  That'll do

Time's almost Out!

Hear ye, hear ye!  The anthology deadline is almost here!  Arrrr.... I be wanting yer stories now, maties!  Oh wait... national Talk like a Pirate Day was Saturday   Don't mind me... lack of sleep and massive brain fog make for very strange blog posts      Anyway... we've got a great selection of stories so far, with more on the way.  I'm in the process of pairing proofreaders with authors for the submissions I've received so far.  Authors should expect to hear from me within the

The Proof is in the... Creature Feature!

What does the Anthology Proof Team do?  Once your anthology story is finished and edited, then it's time to send it to me so I can assign a Proof Team member to give it a final once-over.  Why do we do this? To ensure that stories meet site guidelines and basic editing standards.  We look for anything the author and their team may have missed - misspelled words, misused words, unintentional grammar mistakes, punctuation.  I have a great team of knowledgeable proofreaders ready to go with their r

Thank You to Our Anthology Team!

It's Thanksgiving week in the USA, so we thought a perfect way to kick off the week would be to thank our Anthology Team for their hard work throughout the year!  There is a lot of work that goes into producing the GA anthologies, from the behind-the-scenes technical support from @Myr, banner creation and general support from @Cia and @wildone, and the unsung heroes of the anthology - the Proof Team!   The Proof Team works diligently to ensure anthology stories meet site standards and basic edit
