Isaac Asimov wrote some short stories about a goose who laid golden eggs -- actually eggs with flecks of gold in the shells,  Fascinating and humorous to read.  Larry Niven wrote a lot of short stories.  Some where science fiction, some fantasy, and some detective.  Anne McCaffrey wrote several good short stories,, and on this site I like the short stories of @Geron Kees, @Myr, @chris191070, @Valkyrie, @astone2292, @BendtedWreath, and several others.   (Keep in mind, to me a short story is under 30,000 words.)   And I can't forget the short story by @wildone -- "Why is Your Underwear in the Swimming Pool?"

Who doesn't love a good short story, one that fuels the imagination when a new universe of possibility is created. Drawing the reader in and leaving questions and thoughts to ponder and ruminate on. One of my personal favorites was The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Such great care was taken in creating a world that left me wanting to know more about this world, the whys, the hows, and the what-if's...

And that, my friends, is the power of a short story...

Great article.  I always have and probably always will struggle with keeping things short and tight.  My "short" stories have grown increasingly longer over the years.

Another master of the short story is Stephen King.   He's well known for his novels, but has several short story collections and they're all masterfully done.  His short story The Jaunt from Skeleton Crew is hands down the scariest thing I've ever read in my entire life.    

I read Libby's article when it first posted, it's full of excellent advice. i love to write short stories, they are my preference. I have a hard time with large multi chaptered stories, they take too long, in my opinion. When I'm reading i enjoy short stories and collections of same but i also like a good long novel. 

As a reader, I was never a big fan of short stories. I wanted to escape when I read, and that meant my voracious appetite craved long, complicated stories, ones to make me laugh and weep, and get my heartrate going. 

Writing changed that. At first I was reluctant to write short stories, but then how could I support these popular things called anthologies? So, I dove in and wrote something I originally intended to be a poem. It opened my eyes to the power of short stories, and I haven't stopped writing them since. Once I even wrote three entries for one anthology. To anyone on the fence about participating, anthologies are where I learned discipline and economy, and that has served me well in all my writing, whether short or long. Prompts, once avoided, do the same thing, and have gotten me to write something I normally wouldn't have. Yup, I finally figured out size doesn't matter.
