It is found in many East Asian countries at all socio-economic levels. If you go with your initial reaction, you're going to spend any time vacationing here, punching men and missing out on the fun. Oh...unless that's your kind of thing.😁 Oh don't get it twisted, people operating a self-owned business is something I really admire, and sometimes wish I could do myself. I just wish (and I know I'm probably arguing against cultural norms I'm not a part of) that sometimes these guys could divorce their concept of self-owned business they stared and run, to this monolithic thing that dictates the futures of everyone in their families. 4 1

In Japan, it's become practice for an older businessman to adopt young men (even in their thirties) as a legal heir, to ensure that ownership of the business is kept within his family line. 2 1 2

I get your point, Spike. Maybe if I put it differently, it might be clearer. It is the family and its values that come first. The business is something that is owned by the family, and the responsibility of the family is to all participate in generating the wealth of all the members of the family. Thus, the business is a family heirloom possession to be maintained and grow through the work of all family members. This goes for all families, from farmers to huge conglomerates like Samsung. The hierarchy may be set, but there is a lot of room for individualism in the system. In a system like this, you probably would get your wish to establish your own business and the support to make it successful. Edited January 15 by raven1 2 4
