    Actually now that I think about it, my last 2 apartments had the washing machines in the kitchen, but I don't see that very often in houses.

    Poor guy. If he thinks animals in America are bad, he's going to have a hard time if he ever ends up in Australia. (Who keeps their washing machine in the kitchen? Where does the dishwasher go)?

    Using the example above, I could have easily started with my main character waking up in bed one morning before school. And that would have been a totally acceptable beginning paragraph. This might just be me, but nothing will have me leaving a story quicker than an opening like that. I haven't met this character and I'm not going to care unless they are doing something interesting. Good topic!

    I had a boyfriend in college that was reading the series. I remember because I got him one of the books for Christmas and it took forever to find it.

    Great article. I am watching a show that has this exact problem. There have been at least 5 fake out deaths of characters, where you think a character dies, then they come back a few episodes later. It got to a point where I was seriously irritated because the stakes had completely disappeared. Pretty soon the only deaths that really mattered were those of ancillary characters...ones that I knew wouldn't come back. It helped, some, but it was still really obnoxious to see a very dangerous scene set up, a tragic endings, then all that was undone next episode.

    Yeah, but that was over 15 years ago. There are some great westerns on the site though.

    This was really interesting to read. Especially the response about sex in stories. The response I've always gotten from talking with others (both here and otherwise) had been pretty lukewarm. Guess we're all secretly horny, lol.

    Great article! I was thinking of my current project while reading this and I have a protagonist that does a lot of "reacting" to things around him while he struggles to make sense of a new situation he finds himself in, but later on, when he takes contol and is in charge...much more impactful and fun to write!

    I am reading a book that is really well written but covers subject matter that I find very upsetting. It's an interesting juxtaposition.

    My sister did Keto and found that imitation crab is also loaded with carbs, so stay away from that. I'm a fellow carb lover, so I can't help you with snack alternatives, sorry.
