    Among the many things to like in this chapter is the honest, forthright approach Louis takes to Max and to the situation. He faces his own misgivings not by papering them over, but by working them out in his own mind with the help and insight of another patient. The encounter with Max is not laden with false hope or put-on pity; what we get is a story with reality. Yet that reality also appears to have a few rays of sunshine - Max smiles, and considers something outside the walls of his current prison. Louis is right to be concerned about the care he and Don will be called upon to give. It will be significant, and Louis is just as honest about that as everything else. Yet Don is drawn to Max's need, and that's significant, too. Fantastic chapter.

    A Winter's Hike I dress in dark clothes, thick and grey like storm warnings; barometric signs in flannel and fine knit wool foretelling doomsday blizzards. I pass dogs at play, Terriers dressed in plaid coats, Labs with clouded breath; and my cold legs yearn like theirs to thrill in mud-spattered joy.     So Jon became human after all. That’s something crucial. The father hasn’t, and may not ever do so if they never truly talk things out. Woody is sorry and regrets his online adventures, but Dad can’t bring himself to recognize what’s real and good in his second son. That is very, very sad. Connor’s coming out seems to have made an immense difference both to Woody and to Jon. This is a great story, and you wrapped it up well.

    What a great chapter. How wonderful to see Michael and Blaine appear here; nice to see them brought to life again. And what a life CJ and Owen lead! I’d love to know more about CJ’s coursework, and the kinds of papers or research he has to do. And what professors have made his mind catch fire? But you describe an incredible life, and it’s wonderful to read.

    The father needs a major brain rearrangement. He can be disappointed if he wants, but the stony silent treatment won’t make the situation go away. And the principal is completely unbelievable. How could he behave in such a way? The next school board meeting ought to have a motion to see that man dismissed or suspended. Need another chapter! Please?

    Like you, I have an old edition of the RTP Field Guide, which rides in my car, just in case I see some interesting bird wherever I go. It’s a treasured and very useful book. I’ll think of you next time I open mine. Thank you for your really kind comments on these poems. They’re fun to write, especially given the pleasure watching these feathered neighbors give us all.

    Some guides suggest our North American Nuthatches call: “Yank, yank...” but “snark, snark...” is almost as good. And the alarm call at my appearance in the yard certainly could sound that way, perhaps as a comment on my old worn-out boots. Thanks for reading these!
