The reason I interpreted the way I did is the passage "he knew the boy was big enough to do anything and he would be powerless to stop him" If Dylan realizes that then you can be sure Ryan did. There also the line "He knew what was going to happen as much as he didn't want it to happen. " And then Dylan started to shed tears but Ryan didn't give a damn.
