After all Greg and Mason have done that wasn't called for. The parental reaction defense doesn't wash either as Clay admitted he didn't even read the material.
There is a real fraternity among most police departments and bros take care of bros is more than just a saying. Greg's immediate offer for Clay to bring Orson to the Refuge was no mere gesture but a heartfelt act of compassion and obligation for a wounded brother. Families pitch in and help and Mason surely gets that too as exemplified by his willingness and help.
