Running with the Pack - 42. Chapter 42

The private jet landed in Calgary after the long flight. Parker Valley, along with several other packs from Pennsylvania and New York chartered the aircraft to save time reaching the annual Congress of Alphas in Alberta, Canada. It took nearly an hour to get their luggage and go through customs. Yet more waiting was needed to get everything set with the three SUVs Parker Valley had rented, before they were ready to get on the road to their final destination.

Before departing, John gathered his people together. “Okay, provided there aren’t any traffic problems, it should be about a two hour drive to the resort. I know after spending some six hours in a noisy jet, being stuck in trucks for another couple hours isn’t a big joy, but you first timers are in for a surprise.” He wrapped his arm around Jackie, placing a kiss on her cheek. “Aiden, you and your group take that SUV. I guess Dan and Rafe can ride with us since your security guys asked to not be stuck with them in your truck. Something about grumpy, old wolves snoring in the car.”

The groups climbed into their respective vehicles and a member of the security detail took the driver’s seat in each. Soon, a line of three black SUV’s sped down the highway. The city’s concrete faded into lush, green farmland. On the horizon, the mountains’ silhouette could be seen. As the road climbed into the Canadian Rockies, pine trees ever increasing in density spread across the landscape until the farms were no more.

Ethan was amazed by the beauty. Dense forest and snow capped mountains were visible in every direction. Aiden was likewise taken by the scenic wonders. It was so different from the woodlands of their territory, though regardless of the splendor, this was not home.

Excitement mounted for Ethan with all the new scents. “Can we come back here sometime when we’re not on business?”

“I’d love that. When all this is finished, we’ll definitely have earned a vacation.” Aiden draped his arm around his pup.

“Just don’t forget about your security detail boss. Can’t risk anything happening to the future alpha pair.” Casey joked

Rounding the last curve on the road, the canyon pass opened to a large glacial valley as the resort came into view.

“That’s where we’re staying?” Ethan’s eyes widened as what looked like a massive castle stood before them.

“Yep, and we’ll have plenty of time to go for runs while we’re here. It isn’t going to be all work.” Aiden rubbed his mate’s neck.

John and his contingent arrived at the Wolf Ridge Chateau Resort at Lake Louise in Banff National Park. The resort had been taken over for two weeks to host the convention. The yearly gathering was for all alphas within the United States and Canada, making up the two hundred twenty one member packs of the North American Lycan Council. It did not matter how large or small a pack was, at this meeting each alpha was supposed to be on equal footing. The hotel itself was owned by the Council, providing their members with both an incredible location for their gathering and a profitable income source carrying the property through rest of the year.

John and Aiden went to the reception desk to check their group. Returning a few minutes later, a valet escorted them to their block of three suites on the tenth floor.

Ethan ran to the window. The view of the lake below and the mountains to the west was stunning. The evening sun was just above the ridge, casting a golden-orange glow throughout the valley.

After dropping their bags in their respective rooms, John called everyone into his suite. He handed out lanyards with name badges. “Put these on and make sure you don’t lose them. These will get you into the meetings and events you’re authorized to attend. Those of you on security detail will need to be with whomever you’re escorting to get into anything.”

Ethan looked at his and Aiden’s. Below the name it listed their title as Alpha Designate, Parker Valley Pack. He also glanced at Jackie’s which read Alpha, Parker Valley Pack. Rafe’s had Chief Enforcer, while Casey, Cody, and Darius all had Enforcer. Heather was listed as Personal Assistant to Alpha and the rest showed Security.

Before Ethan could ask about the rank on the badge, John explained. “As the alpha designates to the pack, you both can attend any meeting or event, even those restricted to alphas. There are several I would suggest you accompany me to. If the meeting is at the same time as an enforcer meeting, one of the additional security teams will go with you. We have a welcome reception tonight at seven o’clock in the grand ballroom.” John focused on the non-wolves in the group. “Now, Cody and Darius, I know I’m repeating what I said before we left home, but since this gathering is all wolves, if anyone hassles you, politely tell the person to speak with me.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

There was a knock on the door and when a guard opened it, John waved the man into the room. “I’d like you all to meet Justin Massey, our pack’s delegate to the Council.”

Justin went around greeting everyone while John finished the briefing.

“Ethan, if the jet wasn’t bad enough, the reception tonight might overwhelm your nose. There’s going to be a lot of people there. If you need a break, Casey and Cody can escort you someplace to get fresh air. We’ve tried to prepare you for this gathering, but there just wasn’t time to cover everything. You are to have at least two escorts with you at all times. Understood? And be cautious while projecting your own strength. The people here will be able to tell by your scent you were turned, and with you being new, plus your rank, some may try to test you.”

“I understand, Alpha.”

“You have two hours before we meet back here and go down to the reception as a group. Justin, Dan and I have some business to discuss. Aiden, you’re welcome to stay or you can relax with your mate.”

******

Security at the door to the ballroom scanned the name tags of everyone attending the reception. After a brief wait in line, the Parker Valley delegation entered the venue. Doors lined one entire wall allowing the space to extend out onto a large terrace. At the far end from the main entrance was a massive rock fireplace. Opposite the wall of doors were seven well-stocked buffet tables. The alpha pair made their way hand in hand into the masses, greeting old friends. Rafe was continually at Jackie’s right side with Dan at John’s left. Aiden and Ethan followed and were flanked by Casey, Darius, and Cody. The remainder of their security surrounded the core group. John steered his people over to Aiden’s father and his alpha, Adam Carver.

“John, Jackie, good to see you.” Alpha Carver greeted the group.

“Nice to see you, Adam. Seems to be a good turnout this year. Liz, you look wonderful.” John kissed the woman on the cheek.

Craig and Marsha warmly welcomed everyone. “Aiden, it’s good to see you here. You too, Ethan.”

“Thanks, Dad. It’s a little overwhelming, but it’s an honor to be here.”

“This year I get to boast with fatherly pride to the other betas that my son and his mate are both alpha designates.”

As the two alphas talked, Mark Jennings and his mate from Columbia River Pack joined with their delegation and the hellos started again.

Ethan’s nose was working overtime trying to process everything. He tugged on Aiden’s sleeve to get his attention. “I know you and the alpha warned me, but I still figured it would be like the pack meetings at home. All this is making me dizzy.”

Aiden eyed his mate with concern. “You’ll adjust to it, but it’ll take some time. It’s a little difficult for me too since the alphas have a stronger scent. Make sure to let me know if it gets to be too much.”

“I will.” Ethan squeezed his big bad’s hand for support.

Jackie watched the younger pair and could see the blond was having trouble. She gave a slight nod to Aiden as she pulled his mate over to her. “Ethan, I’d like you to meet the alpha mate from Columbia River Pack, Sarah, and you already know Elizabeth. This is Ethan’s first experience around this much alpha testosterone.”

“All that musk can be a little overwhelming.” Sarah theatrically waved her hand in front of her nose while appraising Ethan. “With all the new smells here, try to focus on the scent of your mate. You’ll always be able to find it even in a crowd like this. It will help block out the others.”

The young turnling closed his eyes for a moment and did as she said. He picked out Aiden’s scent in the mass of others and was able to focus on just that. A calming sensation flow over him. “Thank you. I feel a little better already.”

“It’ll get easier with time.” Elizabeth assured him.

The three alphas spoke and occasionally said hello to other leaders as they passed. Ethan picked up a sour scent approaching from behind. It was unlike any of the others who had passed near them. He fought the urge to cover his nose. The security details for the three groups moved in a little tighter on those they were protecting and turned towards the newcomers.

A somewhat hostile looking wolf sniffed at Cody and Darius, his eyes narrowed as he glared at Cody. “Who allowed a worthless little coyote into this room? There should be rules banning the lower species from this conference. Shouldn’t you be rummaging through a dumpster or something? The human I can understand since it’s always handy to have fresh food nearby.”

John’s eyes flashed amber as he faced the other alpha. “Showing disrespect like that to members of my delegation could be viewed as a direct challenge to me, Dorian. You know the rules about that at Congress. I suggest you apologize and then back the fuck away from my pack members.”

“You’re allowing their kind into your pack now, John?” The man laughed before returning his glare to the non-wolves. “And to think yours is considered one of the strongest packs.” Dorian turned towards Ethan and scented him, receiving a warning growl from both Ethan and Aiden. “Back down with that whimper of a growl, boys. Pups like you don’t have what it takes around an alpha. So, John, even bringing along someone’s little turned bitch with your delegation. Your pack’s really slipping.”

Ethan frowned at the larger man he viewed as nothing more than a bully. HIs voice dropped to a low, threatening tone he had never used before. “He said back the fuck off, asshole. That means you and the goon squad behind you.”

Dorian laughed at the absurdity of the small pup barking at him like that, until he saw his companions were doing as Ethan commanded. Infuriated, Dorian took a step towards the blond. “That tone won’t work on me. No little bitch tells me or my people what to do.”

Faster than anyone expected, John picked up the man by the throat and slammed him down onto the floor. His hand transformed into his hybrid paw with claws just about to break the skin. Dorian’s enforcer and security were about to intervene when all three packs shook their heads. The eyes of the three wives flashed in anger. His people did not move to assist.

“I’m still waiting for your apology, Dorian.” John increased the strength of his grip. “Regardless of the Congress rules, I would sincerely hate to kill you here since it would mean I’d be bound to absorb your pack into my own, and I want nothing to do with you or your people.”

Squeaking out a struggled response, Dorian made his apology. “I regret offending you or your delegation.”

John released his grip on the man’s throat. “That wasn’t too difficult now, was it? I hope you enjoy the rest of the reception. Oh, and you should feel lucky I didn’t let the young one here deal with you. He might not have been as forgiving as I am.” He nodded towards Ethan.

As Dorian stood, security in the room came over and escorted him to another section of the ballroom with a warning to both alphas about keeping things civil.

Cody bowed his head. “Thank you, Alpha.”

John placed a hand on Cody’s shoulder and nodded. “No one disrespects one of my pack like he did. Now, how about we check out the buffet. I’m not sure about the rest of you, but I’m feeling famished.” He glanced at Ethan. “Nice use of an alpha voice. Who taught you that trick? Keep an eye out for him. Odds are he’ll be hunting for you now.”

“I’m sorry, Alpha. It just kinda slipped out before I could stop myself. I don’t let anyone other than Aiden calling me a little bitch.” As soon as he said it, he slapped his hands over his mouth while the cheeks flushed bright red, and all three packs laughed.

Led by the three leaders, they went in search of something to eat. At the center of the main table was a large ice sculpture of a wolf. The creator was obviously an incredible artist. The food was equally impressive with just about anything a carnivore could ever want. The large cuts of roast beef were nice and rare. A chef grilled hamburgers to order, and the dessert table could give you a sugar high for a month just by looking at it.

There were easily a thousand people at the party. After eating their fill, the group moved through the ballroom and out to the terrace to enjoy the spectacular view of the lake and snow capped mountains. Heaters were scattered around the space, giving off a soft glow from the flame running up the center, plus providing heat in the chill of the night air. Neither Ethan nor Aiden had ever been someplace as beautiful, unless they counted their special spot back home by the waterfall. The alpha and Jackie mingled with other alphas they were friendly with; they introduced the younger couple to all. Aiden’s nose caught a scent he thought was familiar. He glanced around trying to figure where it was coming from but with so many other around it was difficult to locate. Recognition set in on who it belonged to.

When the alpha broke off his conversation with a friend, Aiden leaned in to whisper in his ear. “I’m positive I recognize the scent of someone here. I think he’s here.”

John turned to face Aiden. “Him? Are you absolutely sure?”

“With all the other scents in the room I can’t be completely certain, but I am as sure as I can be.”

“That will have to do. You’re the only one who knows what he looks like, unless you count the dreams Ethan had while you were missing. We’re going to walk through the terrace and ballroom. See if you can follow the scent and let me know if you see him.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

They made their way around the multitude of people, and Aiden mentioned the scent was getting stronger. Just beyond a group of alphas were three men talking amongst themselves.

“Alpha, he’s right over there. The really tall, muscular guy. That’s definitely him.”

“I’ve seen him here before, but I’ve never spoken to him. There’s no doubt in your mind he is the rogue leader?”

“None whatsoever, Alpha. I’ll never forget him. He’s the only six-foot-ninish wolf pushing three hundred pounds of muscle I’ve seen. That’s Jean-Pierre.”

“I guess now’s as good a time as any to say hello.” The alpha whispered to Rafe. “The rogue leader’s here. We’re going to greet him. This is not a confrontation unless he turns it into one, but tell our people I don’t want him to leave. If he tries to run, take him down by any and all means, including lethal.”

Rafe nodded and passed on the information quickly and quietly.

Aiden and John led the group over as their security detail spread out so Jean-Pierre could not escape. The man slowly turned and looked directly at Aiden. Instead of surprise, a smile formed on his face.

“Deputy Jacobs, this is an unexpected but pleasant surprise.” Speaking with a noticeable French accent, he turned his attention to John. “Alpha Stockdale, though we’ve never officially met, I do know you. It’s a pleasure to meet you, although understandably awkward. Beyond how you already know me, let me introduce myself. I’m Sebastien Renard, Alpha of Lumières du Nord Pack, Lights of the North for those who don’t speak French.” He carefully appraised the men standing around him, noticing all avenues of escape were blocked. “Perhaps we should go someplace a little more private to have a chat that’s long overdue.”

“I would say that’s a very good idea, because without some answers soon, this coincidental meeting could become a serious problem. Even with the assistance you’ve provided lately.”

The group moved to one of the available lounges off the ballroom. Inside, the man Aiden knew as Jean-Pierre introduced his men. “This is my beta, Lucas, and my enforcer, Noah.” The two men nodded respectfully to Alpha Stockdale before their own alpha indicated they should take a seat.

“This is my mate, Jackie, my beta, Dan, my enforcer, Rafe, and our security detail. Aiden, the others are yours to introduce.”

Sebastien eyed the blond at Aiden’s side. “You must be his husband.”

“Yes, Ethan’s my mate and my enforcers are Casey, Darius, and Cody.”

“Missus Stockdale, it’s an honor to meet you. Ethan, given how your mate spoke of you while he was in my company and in our calls, it is a privilege to finally meet you in person.” Everyone except the security detail took a seat. “I want to first thank you for taking in and protecting my mate and pups. It’s not something you had to do. I’m guessing you are the coyote and the solaris Marie spoke of.”

This was answered by a nod from the pair.

“If I had thought Aiden might be here, I would have reconsidered attending this year. The council members I’ve had dealings with have never met me in person. When I revert to my native accent, I can speak to them without suspicion.” Sebastien directed his attention towards John. “If you decide you want to turn me in, I will go along without making any scene. Lord knows I’ve committed enough crimes to warrant execution many times over.”

John studied the man for a moment. “You’ve been exceptionally helpful lately, so I’ll hear you out before deciding what to do.”

“Jean-Pierre is an alias I created when I first got involved with the rogue group. I was not much more than Aiden’s age when I went looking for that gang and joined up. My father was against the idea, but we couldn’t come up with any better solution to our pack’s problem with them. We had about fifty wolves while growing up. Every winter and most springs, we would get attacked by a gang. During winter, they would steal our supplies. In spring, they would go after of our young men and sometimes women. We thought it was to try and build up their own numbers. My father pleaded with the Lycan Council for assistance in dealing with the problem, but it always fell on deaf ears even though we paid our council dues. We were small and insignificant to them.

“Trying to fight off the gang caused our numbers to drop to the point we only had about twenty-five members left by the time I was eighteen. When a lookout would see them coming, the pack would run and hide. I returned from university with the hopes of helping to build up our pack, but when I got home, we were down to just fifteen people. I finally had enough of running and followed one of their raiding parties back to their base. I used the name Jean-Pierre and told them I had no home and wanted to join up.” He leaned back in his chair, looking at the ceiling. “The induction to the gang was not pleasant, but I survived it and began going on raiding parties hitting different packs in New York, New England, and Eastern Canada. I managed to warn my people in advance when the gang went for them and a few of my father’s neighbors as well, but it was difficult to get a warning out. I had a good head for tactical and combat assessments and began to climb in their ranks.

“About fifteen years ago, while on one of the raiding parties, I found my mate. My commander was going to kill her father and planned to rape her. Instead, I killed him and his second. Hers was a small pack like my own, but I wasn’t going to allow my mate or her family to be harmed. I told him to go to my father’s pack and that they would be safe and protected there. I pledged that despite what I was, I would provide for my mate. Some of their people fled their homes to join my father while the others gave their lives to cover the escape. When I reported in to my leader, I told him of the commander’s botched job. The other gang members only saw the fighting that seemed to leave the entire pack dead. This assisted me in becoming one of the gang’s senior lieutenants.”

John eyed Sebastien suspiciously, as he leaned back in his chair. Aiden was sitting forward, resting his chin on his clasped hands, following the man’s story with interest and skepticism.

“I got into a position where I could influence who we attacked. I also became familiar with the ties our gang had with the Lycan Council. The Council would let us know which packs weren’t paying their dues or as much as was wanted. We were the punishment sent to collect. If a pack failed to pay for three years in a row, we were authorized to destroy them and do as we wished with any of its members we took alive. The council didn’t care as long as they got a percentage from the sale of any lycan. When I found my father was on the list for non-payment, I warned him and urged him to pay. He refused, saying the Council wanted money but wouldn’t assist when he needed it. Between my own family and my mate with her family in my home, knowing what was going to happen to them, I challenged my leader for control of the gang. I managed to kill him and assumed control. When the council inquired about my father’s pack, I reported back that they had all been killed in the raid. I got my father to move to a new territory and take on a new name.

“My business sense worked well for making the gang more profitable and maximizing what we were required to share with the Lycan Council. I also developed new business opportunities such as running the feral fights with people all over the world placing bets on or putting prisoners up against each other in the arena. A joint venture between a Canadian gang, the Council, and my group led to the creation of the drug you located at my base.”

“How could you create a drug to use against your own people? Something that forces a lycan to become feral?” Aiden growled in anger.

“To me, it was better to be part of it as opposed to having it used against me. This is the reality of our world.”

“Aiden, I said we’d listen, so let him finish. We can ask questions later.”

Sebastien gave a respectful nod to John. “Eventually, as leader of the gang, I was able to finally protect my father’s pack. That is until a rival in his area attacked and killed him. They planned on merging the two packs, but I responded with my forces and killed their leader while taking their senior wolves as prisoners. I allowed some to escape or join my pack. The rest ended up in a life of servitude. I assumed the role of alpha to Lights of the North and had my beta run it in my absence while I saw to the operation of the gang.

“With my first pup born, I swore to do anything to insure their safety from the Lycan Council or anyone else. Even if that meant going after innocent packs. Instead of the Lycan Council extorting money from us, I allowed the Council to actually pay my membership dues through the gang. I was also able to guarantee my people’s safety. I’m not proud of the things I have done. Rape, kidnapping, and torture were a way of life for many within the gang, and I took part in that often. I will even admit I enjoyed it. Especially the rush of taking from others. I became a true alpha predator concerned only with protecting my own and generating a profit for my business. To be able to protect the people in my pack, I will take whatever comes from running that gang.”

John looked over to Aiden, who had listened intently to Sebastien’s narrative.

Aiden nodded to his alpha. “I hate to say it, but I believe him.”

“Are you sure, Aiden?”

“Yes, Alpha. He may be a lot of things that are too offensive to name, but something about the tone of his voice rings true. It might be a game. He was the leader of one of the most violent gangs in the east and a skilled liar to pull off a dual life for so long. But for the moment, I believe him.”

“He’s telling the truth, Alpha.” Ethan crossed his arms as he glared at the man who once held his mate in chains.

“I trust the opinion of these two young men, so I am going to take you at your word, for now. I will do some checking into your story, but if what you are saying is true, then I might have acted in the same manner to protect my pack and the people I care about.”

“When an informant came into my possession with what was believed to be security information on your pack, I saw two possible outcomes. Either something profitable or the destruction of the gang once and for all.” Sebastien’s bluntness surprised the others. “Too many people heard the informant spouting off on what he wanted. About what he could pay. I couldn’t easily pass it up in front of everyone without causing someone to challenge me. I pressed for research and security tests against you. At the risk of being offensive, the results came back as dismal for your security.

“While I intended to attack you if the opportunity presented itself, my top lieutenant issued the order when I was on business, which meant seeing my own family. Ultimately, as leader, I’m responsible for his actions. I had planned on killing the idea of striking your pack as too risky, but it had the benefit of uniting the packs in the region in a way my father never could and finally eliminated the rogue threat. There’s a current vacuum in that area for a criminal element. I believe it is possible to keep a new gang from taking up operations and safeguarding everyone. From people like me and the upstanding leadership of the Council.”

Aiden turned towards Sebastien’s beta. “Did you know everything he was doing? Did you and your pack take part in it?”

Lucas received a nod from his alpha before answering. “I knew he led the gang. Beyond that, at my request, we did not discuss anything having to do with that aspect of his life. Anytime we talked, it was about pack business. I didn’t want to be involved or know what he was doing in his other life.”

“So your attitude was if I don’t know about it, nothing’s really going on. Correct?” Aiden sat back, crossing his arms in disgust.

“Yes, Alpha Jacobs. I made sure our people stayed clear of his business dealings even though it financed our lives. Am I guilty of participating? Yes, by association I am. Is our pack guilty? To my knowledge, no members other than myself, Noah, and our luna had any indication of what our alpha was doing.”

John placed his hand on his future successor’s shoulder. “Aiden, this is going to be you first call as part of your training to become alpha. Do we arrest this man and put him on trial for his actions? Or do we only acknowledge him as the alpha of a small pack from Canada?”

“I want to verify what we can of the things he’s told us. In all honesty, I’m torn between killing him right now, exposing him to the entire congress, and letting him live. We can’t do anything before the big meeting. Bringing him down publicly would cause his pack’s destruction regardless of their innocence or guilt. If what he said checks out as claimed, I would be willing to let him live so long as he remains only with his pack and possibly makes some kind of restitution to survivors.” Aiden’s eyes dropped to the floor as he rubbed his temples. Raising them, they bore into Sebastien. “If I get the slightest impression you’re trying to play me in this, I will kill you myself, and your pack will bear the punishment for your actions.” Taking out his phone, he snapped a picture of Sebastien. “Just for insurance in case I need to broadcast your face to every alpha and pack across the globe.”

“I will respect your decision, whatever it is. I’m just thankful the gang is finished. Death might be a welcome end for the life I’ve led. Should it be your decision to kill me, may I request you accept leadership of my pack and territory or merge it into Parker Valley and that you continue to keep my mate and pups safe?”

John nodded. “Unless Aiden chooses to take yours as his own pack, they will be offered membership in Parker Valley. The territory will become a satellite of ours. Your mate and pups will also be looked after. That was Aiden’s word when he picked them up, and it is my word now. Perhaps we should return to the reception. If you run, and you do have that option, there won’t be a place in the human or lycan world you’ll be able to hide. Your pack will run the risk of being branded part of the gang by association to you.”

“I accept your terms, Alpha Stockdale and Alpha Jacobs.”

As everyone stood, Sebastien approached Ethan, causing Casey to step in front of his charge. “I did my best to try and convince your mate that his intelligence and instincts could serve him well if he came to work for me. Regardless of any potential wealth he could obtain, he was only interested in getting back to you.” With that Sebastien headed for the door with his two pack mates behind him.

“I hope I’m not making the biggest mistake of my life by letting him walk out that door.” Aiden watched as the man who once held him captive disappeared into the crowd.

“I trust you, Aiden. And your instincts. You have his picture. If he crosses you, there’ll be no place on earth he can hide.” John patted the younger wolf on the shoulder. “Even though I said the decision was yours, if I thought you were making a monumental mistake, I would have stepped in to prevent it.”

Shortly after the Parker Valley delegation returned to the reception, John saw two alpha pairs standing together away from the others. He steered his people over to the small group who greeted him warmly.

“John, Jackie, it’s good to see you.” Both couples shook John’s hand and leaned in to give Jackie a kiss on the cheek.

“Gentlemen, I’d like to introduce you to someone. This is Aiden Jacobs and his mate Ethan Tucker. They’re my alpha designates and they usually hyphenate.” John smirked as he introduced his protégés before waving his hand at the other men. “This is Spencer Arabello and his mate Matthew Daxter, and that pair is Carl Schaefer and his mate Edward Jennings. Spence and Matt have a pack in Washington, not too far from Adam’s pack. Carl and Edward lead one in Texas.”

“Alphas, it’s a pleasure to meet you all.” Aiden nodded respectfully.

Ethan smiled before shaking their hands.

“I see you’re both the alpha designate. If we can ever be of assistance to you, just let us know.” Spencer eyed the dark haired younger lycan. “Aiden Jacobs… Are you related to Craig Jacobs, Adam Carver’s beta at Olympia?

“Yes, Alpha. He’s my father.”

John and half the Parker Valley group left to allow Aiden and Ethan to get acquainted with the four men.

After they departed, Carl gave a laugh. “As alpha designate, you don’t need to call us alpha. Your title gives you the same rank here. You’re lucky to have a leader like John to learn from. When we first came to this event two years ago, he was one of the few to acknowledge we existed. He and Adam helped us navigate the conference and introduced us to several other friendly alphas, including Spencer and Matthew. I know there are still quite a few that would love to be rid of us, but we’re not going anywhere.”

Edward rolled his eyes. “Please don’t start your whole, ’we’re here, we’re queer, what are you gonna do about it’ mantra.”

“Hon, I wasn’t planning on it, but you did it for me.” Carl covered his mouth to keep from giggling too much.

“Alpha Stockdale’s great and we all feel fortunate to be with him. So my friends here don’t think I’m being rude, these three are our betas and enforcers, Casey, Cody, and Darius.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you guys as well.” Matthew reached out as everyone shook hands. “Okay, I know I’m going to get hit by my mate, but from your scents, you three are mated to each other? Even being three different species?” Spencer did hit his arm.

Aiden and Ethan laughed. Casey grinned, Cody blushed, and Darius nodded proudly. “Yes, Alpha. It seemed the only reasonable choice with how we feel about each other. And it serves to strengthen us in our protection duties.”

“I can see how that would have some advantages with your responsibilities.” Edward let his eyes subtly travel over the three enforcers.

Matthew handed his glass off to a nearby server. “Would we be out of line if we invited you guys to go on a run with us after the reception?”

Spencer leaned in to tease his mate. “Mmhmm… Didn’t take you long to suggest something that would get the new guys out of their clothes.”

Matthew hit Spencer on the arm as his face turned bright red. All of them were laughing.

Aiden squeezed his pup’s hand. “At least it isn’t just my mate who’s usually trying to get people to strip.”

Ethan took it in stride. “Hey, if someone has a body to show off, I don’t mind seeing it. It’s nice to see how other men compare to my Big Bad.”

“I have a feeling this is going to be a much more enjoyable conference this year. It’ll be nice having new couples to run with.” Spencer wrapped his arm around Matthew.

Aiden informed John they were going on a run with the alphas they had just met. John thought it was a good idea to get to know the four men and reminded him they would be meeting up at eight-thirty in the morning.

Spencer wanted to lead the group to an area he and Matthew liked. As they began to strip, the four alphas were trying to subtly appraise the group from Parker Valley. Without thinking, he let out a low, “Damn…”

Carl, who was also now openly staring, wiped the back of his hand across his lips. “Yeah, what he said.”

Aiden gave a low warning growl as he frowned at the men.

Ethan noticed where the other guys were looking and smiled with pride.

“Chill, Big Bad. I think those compliments were directed at you.”

Aiden’s growl stopped and his face flushed red.

Ethan could not contain his laughter as he batted at his mate’s shaft. “I think the same thing every time he strips in front of me.”

Matthew watched the younger couple’s playfulness. “We’re sorry. We didn’t mean to offend or embarrass any of you. And we’re honestly not trying to hit on you, but even I have to admit, you’re all impressive. In all regards.” He glared at his mate. “And for you, Horn Dog. Are you incapable of looking at someone built like a Greek God and hung like a horse without your tongue rolling out like a cartoon wolf?”

Ethan and Casey burst into laughter.

Now that Aiden had relaxed a bit, he was able to joke with their new friends. “You guys aren’t bad either, and considering the bar for me is set by my mate and our friends here, that is saying something.”

“I bet your wolves are equally impressive, although I’m dying to know what the secretive one back there, who seems able to mask his scent, will shift into. Come on tall, blond, and mysterious, don’t keep us in suspense too long.” Edward joked.

Aiden, Ethan, and their three enforcers dropped as their shift took hold. Seconds later, three wolves, a coyote and a lion stood before the others.

“I never would have guessed a lion. That is truly impressive to see.” Awe covered Edward’s face.

Matthew and Spencer approached Aiden and Ethan. “May we look over your wolves?”

Aiden nodded as the pair knelt in front of them.

“You two look perfect together.” Spencer turned towards the others. “Have you guys ever seen markings like this on another wolf? They’re incredible and the pattern is so intricate.”

“The three wolves, as well as the coyote and lion seem to just be an extension of the type of guys they are, impressive all around. Come on you guys, let’s run and show these newcomers the outlook over the lake you like so much. We have two weeks to get to know our new friends better.” Carl began his shift and the others followed.

They took off for the forest, quickly gaining altitude as they ran through the thick trees. Emerging well up the side of the mountain at a rocky outcrop, they stared at the lake far below, its surface was smooth as glass. Lights from the hotel, stars, and moon reflected off it as if from a mirror. Each set of mates nuzzled as they enjoyed the view. Knowing it had been a long day for everyone, they only stayed for around a half hour or so before making their way back to where they left their clothes.

Ethan’s voice reflected his excitement. “Thank you for taking us up there. It was beautiful.”

“You’re welcome. Thanks for going with us. We should probably call it a night. We hope to see a lot more of you five while we’re here and go on a few more runs.” Spencer extended his hand to each of them.

The three groups silently walked back to the hotel, mates holding hands.

On the Congress’ first, full day, there was no large-scale alphas meeting. Instead, many of the delegates broke into smaller work groups of similar interests to discuss items they wanted brought up at the larger gatherings. To some extent it was socializing, although it did serve its purpose. Jackie was scheduled to attend one with about forty alpha mates.

When the Parker Valley delegation met in the morning, Jackie approached Aiden. “This is a voluntary request, provided my mate hasn’t already asked you to join him, I’d like for you and Ethan to come to my group.”

“Alpha hasn’t made any request of us yet, Jackie.”

“It’ll only be about two-hours. John can have you for any of his committee groups after, but I think you’ll both find this useful.”

Rafe reviewed the day’s schedule. “There’s an Enforcer’s group this afternoon from one to three. Do you mind if I take Casey, Darius, and Cody with me?”

Aiden and Ethan glanced at each other before answering. “No issue from us. We’re all here to learn something.”

“Cody and Darius are scheduled to be with the hunters group this morning. Dan and I have a meeting with our allies ‘til about noon. How about we meet back here and head to lunch together before the afternoon sessions.” John suggested.

As Jackie led Aiden and Ethan into the alpha mates meeting, Rafe and Casey followed.

“Good to see you guys here.” Matthew greeted them. “This is one of the more fun groups to attend.”

“We try to be fun. We leave the stogy, stuck-up, out-of-touch mates to their own sessions where they can bitch about progress.” Sarah joked as she joined Jackie. “You’ll find we talk a lot about how we can help our mates or the pack regardless of the way we approach our position.”

The woman running the show came over. “Jackie, I see you brought us some new victims. If they’re anything like the other gentlemen who have the balls to join us, this should be fun. Today is just a relaxing, get reacquainted session. We’ll discuss more things in subsequent ones.” Moments later, the older woman headed to the podium to get things started as everyone took their seats.

Edward and Matthew had suggested spending time with Ethan so they could discuss their role as co-alpha. The trio decided to take a walk near the lake. Aiden was with Sheriff Forester and had Darius tagged along. Jackie was with some of her friends. Rafe accompanied her most everywhere she went when he was not in a meeting of his own. John was off with a group of alphas from across the country who were friends and allies to prepare for the larger gathering. Heather and three of their security detail were with him for the afternoon. Cody and Casey had finished their session with Rafe and were hanging back from Ethan and the two alphas. The enforcers for both of Ethan’s counterparts were walking at their side as the four engaged in their own private conversation while keeping an eye on their charges.

The walk out to the lake had been mostly small talk amongst the three. Edward and Matthew wanted to give Ethan time to get comfortable with them outside of the presence of his mate. By the time they reached an area with a few benches to sit down, Ethan was ready to begin asking questions. “Okay, I know you guys said you were co-alphas with your mates, but is one more in charge than the other?”

Mathew stretched his legs out as he got comfortable. “With Spence and me, I came into his pack after we found each other at college. Since he was the son of the alpha, settling at his home made more sense. His father was killed in a rogue attack, and Spence had to fight off two challengers who weren’t sure he was old enough or strong enough to lead. While they respected him and his father, it was really just about what was best for the pack. In the end, he won. Since it wasn’t a fight to the death, they both agreed to follow him after their defeat. We are equals in every part of our relationship. While I do help in running the pack, I defer to him as the senior alpha between us. I give him all the support I can and give him counsel when he needs it. But I make sure it’s given in private so not to undermine him.”

“With Carl and me, things are a little different.” Edward leaned forward. “We run the pack side by side. It might complicate things at times since we need to be present for most decisions, but we make it work. Carl’s father died young, and his grandfather remained alpha until he felt it was best to step down. The pack stood behind Carl. He’s a powerful alpha in his own right and earned their respect. There were a few upset members when he found me, but since we had the blessing of his grandfather, most any issues were silenced. The pack sees both of us want what’s best for the membership, and we work hard to take care of our people.”

“I’m not really sure what my place is or will be if Aiden becomes the alpha. I haven’t been in this world all that long. I kind of understand he’s been chosen to follow our alpha, but I still have a lot to learn. Watching Jackie, I see her stay to the side and work quietly behind the scenes, but she doesn’t seem to take an active role in running the pack. I always felt safer in the shadows, although I know that probably won’t be possible for me anymore.”

Matthew’s Enforcer called out that a potential problem was approaching as the four security officers took up defensive positions. Seconds after the warning, Ethan picked up a sour scent. He recognized it from the welcome reception. The large man John had thrown to the floor was walking up the path followed by five members of his entourage.

As he neared, he scented the air. “Looks like we found a bitch party, boys.”

“I seem to remember you ending up on the floor apologizing the last time you said something about a bitch in my presence, asshole.” Ethan glared at the large man.

“Dorian, move along, this really isn’t something you want to start.” Edward warned.

“That’s twice now you’ve called me that. Looks like you’ll be the one apologizing this time. I’ll have to teach you some manners, Princess.” Dorian puffed out his chest. “A little bitch like you needs to learn how to show respect to a real alpha.”

“If a real alpha walks up the path, I’ll show him respect, like I do these two sitting beside me. Your type never deserves an apology or respect. Strikes me as the typical insecure bully who thinks he’s all that.” Ethan crossed his arms and was not about to be intimidated.

Cody could see the situation rapidly degrading and quietly spoke into his radio to one of the guards with the alpha. “Urgent problem out at the lake. It’s the guy from the reception. Request immediate backup.” Moving to Ethan’s side, he and Casey prepared to defend him if needed.

Ethan stared at Dorian, never breaking eye contact in what could only be considered a challenge. Neither was backing down.

“It would be fun to knock you down a peg or two.” Ethan glared. “Your kind is always so big and bad until someone actually stands up to you, then you learn some manners.”

“That sounds like a challenge and I accept. Let’s see you knock me down a peg or two as you put it, you little bitch.”

John, Jackie, Aiden, and three other alphas rapidly approached from the resort. “Dorian, I thought I made myself clear last night about getting near any of my delegation.”

“I was just passing by when your pack mate issued a challenge. If his trying to stare me down wasn’t clear enough, him saying it would be fun to knock me down a peg or two most definitely was.”

John turned towards the other men. “Matthew, Edward?”

“Dorian did provoke the situation by calling Ethan a bitch a few times. Unfortunately, that is what Ethan said to him.” Matthew confirmed.

Aiden whispered into the alpha’s ear. “He doesn’t know much about challenges. It isn’t something he’s been exposed to beyond a staring match.”

John called the other alphas together. “Ethan’s still new to this and not familiar with challenges in our world. His words, while technically a challenge, were not meant as such. Rules of the Congress also prohibit challenge fights between anyone other than a pack alpha. Designates are precluded from this.”

“Sparring match is the only option. Dorian has to know if he tries to kill him that both he and his delegation will be destroyed.” Edward pointed out.

“Dorian, you know the rules during Congress about challenges of anyone beyond a pack’s alpha. If this proceeds, you have two choices: a sparring match with Ethan or fighting me. Attempt to kill Ethan, and you as well as your delegation will not survive.” John backed up by the rest of the leaders crossed his arms.

“I accept your terms. He won’t be killed, but I won’t promise not to make him hurt.”

“Aiden, my hands are tied. Ethan may not have known, but it doesn’t change that he issued a challenge.”

Aiden gave his alpha a panicked look. “Alpha, if anything happens to Ethan, I won’t be able to stop my wolf from killing that man.”

John nodded before turning his attention towards Ethan. “You’re going to need to fight. Even though you didn’t realize it, and he set you up. You issued a challenge and he accepted. I’m sorry you have to do this, but I need you to fight him without using your gifts. And you are not allowed to kill him. This is to be between your wolf and his. But you can use either form at any time.”

“I understand. I’m sorry I wasn’t more careful in what I said.”

Aiden pulled his pup to him. “Be careful and I love you. Listen to your wolf, he’ll guide you like he did before.”

“Three of us will oversee the match. The first to submit loses. If we feel the match is going too far, we’ll call a stop to it. Any blatant attempt to kill your opponent will be met with extreme force. Do you both agree to these terms?”

“I agree.” Ethan nodded.

“Let’s just get on with it.” Dorian growled.

As they dropped to all fours, their bodies shifted into their lupus form. Ethan’s white wolf faced off with a grey that had white and black fur mixed in.

When the two appeared ready, Edward raised his hand, looked to both wolves and as his hand dropped, he called out, “Begin.”

Just really enjoyed this chapter; I can't wait for the next one. I really like the explanation that Jean-Pierre gave and hope he can back it up; I for one believe him...

I think it is great how accepting so many of the Alphas and others are; although this Dorian is an aberration, there are always a few that just can't accept change.

I have a feeling that even without his other abilities, Ethan will be able to defend himself quite well. I would have thought that Aiden or the Alpha or Jackie or someone would have covered a few more things about issues like this before the conference...

Great job, and as I said earlier, can't wait for the next chapter...

Oh man...you just can't make us wait until next week for the fight!
It's sad to hear what Jean-Pierre went through to insure the safety of his family's pack...I think he's telling the truth, there is just too much to lose if he's not. It would also be nice if he could ally with Parker Valley anyway.
Dorian is going to find out just what a 'little bitch' can do...and he's not gonna like it. :)
More please, wolf, and don't make us wait.

Thanks Centex. It has been fun building Jean-Pierre from the hateful demon of a man when he was introduced into what he is today. He has committed serious crimes and does the protection of his pack justify that in any way? Maybe and maybe not. It the wolf world the lines are a little more grey.

Many of the Alphas understand the modern world and can accept change, while some like Dorian live in the past or are just too full of themselves.

Anytime Ethan as fought so far, it has been in concert with his gifts. Can he fight another Alpha without the use of those gifts? Regardless of how much preparation Aiden and the others gave Ethan, when a simple twisting of words can lead into a challenge, it becomes more difficult to avoid the school yard bully.

I love the story line, but your editors missed way to many errors in spelling and grammar. This is not to be critical, but informative.

You are telling a astounding story and great at transitions keeping your readers engaged.

Bully for you

Thanks Kubikra, I never mind when someone points out spelling or grammar errors. I'm my own editor, so one one of the ten or so proofreading passes I made before posting this I'm the one that missed any of it. Typically the errors are down to one or two per 1000 words. While I'd like to have it free of errors, I do the best I can before it all blends together.

Thank you, CG :) Yes, I admit it... I am an evil enough person to make everyone wait an entire week, but only because I'm still editing the next chapter, trying to make it as good as I can.

Jean-Pierre knows his fate rests in Aiden's hands and that Aiden made it clear as crystal what would happen if he thought he was getting played.

I still smile every time I read Ethan getting called "the little bitch" and him replying that only Aiden gets to call him that :) and then I picture their playroom.
