Moggy's Mutterings - 19. Cravings

Humans crave.
Cravings for food and drink.
Mostly they crave a connection.
Children seek a parent’s touch.
They play tag or doctor, a chance to touch.
If a gentle hand is not found, a punch will do.
As adults, the craving remains.
Connections of the minds? Making love? Beatings?
All serve to make the human connection.
A baby, deprived of touch, fails to thrive.
An adult shunned, withers and dies.

I think you speak of something fundamentally important here: the need for human touch. Words are nice, sentiments are nice, but giving and receiving touch, whether a hug, a handshake, a caress, or other solidifies connection. It's necessary for development and well-being. It's sad to think that even a punch can be welcoming, but to some, it is. The message here is powerful.

thanks. other than medical procedures i've had, i've had one human touch, (a hug. it was strange feeling) in the past 4 years. so in many ways words take on new mean for me

You always speak the truth, moggy, whether the subject is light, or dark. I don't know a thing about poetry, but this one really struck a chord. Personally I believe the craving can become so ravenous, that over time one can't tell the difference between the punches, and the hugs.

Very well done.

thank you RJ. i was labeled a 'failure to thrive' baby. i learned about the "punches" early.

PS: i'm not sure i know that much about poetry, either, the dang words just fall out of my head. :)

Your point in this poem is well taken. The untouched life is a dry, withered, stunted thing. This is a critical point to make in our digital and virtual age.

thanks parker. i'll settle for the interactive virtual world as opposed to nothing. it is amazing to see the people in the nursing home, respond when you go out of your way to lay a gentle hand on their arm when you talk to them.
