Translation Trashbin - 9. Nuit d’ivresse et d’extase infinie!
A gift for Lyssa, who is always so kind and supportive of my efforts. Muah!
Performance translation from
Berlioz’s Les Troyens
Text by Hector Berlioz*
N° 37 – Duo
Clair de lune
DIDON, ÉNÉE:
Nuit d’ivresse et d’extase infinie!
Blonde Phœbé, grands astres de sa cour,
Versez sur nous votre lueur bénie;
Fleurs des cieux, souriez à l’immortel amour!
DIDON:
Ô nuit, nuit d’ivresse; nuit d’extase infinite!
Blonde Phœbé, grands astres de sa cour,
Versez sur nous votre lueur bénie;
Fleurs des cieux, souriez à l’immortel amour!
ÉNÉE:
[3:51] Par une telle nuit la pudique Diane
Laissa tomber enfin son voile diaphane
Aux yeux d’Endymion.
DIDON:
…nuit d’ivresse; nuit d’extase...
Ô nuit; nuit d’ivresse; nuit d’extase infinite!
Blonde Phœbé, grands astres de sa cour,
Versez sur nous votre lueur bénie;
Fleurs des cieux, souriez à l’amour!
Souriez à l’amour; souriez à l’amour
Souriez à l’amour;
MERCURE:
(d’une voix grave, et étendant le
bras du côté de la mer)
Italie! Italie! Italie!
(Il disparaît.)

No. 37 – Duet
Beneath moonlight
DIDON, ÉNÉE:
Enchanted night of ecstasy endless!
Golden Luna, your court of stars above,
Shine down on us your light to bless;
Blossoms of dark, smile on this immortal love!
DIDON:
[1:17] For on such a night, beneath golden chain trees,
Your mother Venus bound the strong Anchises
In the groves of Ida.
ÉNÉE:
[1:53] For on such a night, mad with love and with joy,
Troilus waited beneath the towering walls of Troy
For the fair Cressida.
DIDON, ÉNÉE:
[2:30] Enchanted night of ecstasy…
Oh, night; night enchanting; oh, night of ecstasy endless!
Golden Luna, your court of stars above,
Shine down on us your light to bless;
Blossoms of dark, smile on this immortal love!
ÉNÉE:
[3:51] On such a night as this did Diana fail,
Letting fully slip her translucent veil
Before her Endymion.
DIDON:
[4:23] On such a night as this did Aeneas
Those plans formulate both cold and traitorous
'Gainst his Dido begin.
ÉNÉE:
[4:43] And on this very night his unjust queen
Accused her blameless lover to him demean,
He rebuked his sin.
DIDON, ÉNÉE:
[5:03] Oh, night enchanting and ecstasy endless…
……night enchanting; night of ecstasy…
Oh, night; night enchanting; night of ecstasy endless!
Golden Luna, your court of stars above,
Shine down on us your light to bless;
Blossoms of dark, smile on this love!
Smile on this love; smile on our love;
Smile on this love;
Smile on our love!
(Mercury suddenly materializes in a
ray of moonlight not far from the
broken column upon which hang
Aeneas’ armor. Approaching
the column, he slowly strikes
the man’s shield,
producing a lugubrious and sustained sound.)
MERCURE:
(with voice grave, and extending
his arm towards the sea)
To Italy! To Italy! To Italy!
(he departs – End of Act Four)
