Translation Trashbin - 38. Amor, perche mai forse

.

Translation of

Rima N. 83

by Michelangelo Buonarroti

Amor, perche mai forse

Non sia la fiamma spenta

Nel freddo tempo dell’ età men verde,

L’arco nouellamente in me ritorse:

E mi saetta ognor ch’ei si rammenta,

Che’n gentil cor giammai colpo non perde.

Amor ne gli anni altrui stagion rinverde

Per un bel volto: or peggio è al sezzo strale

La ripercossa che’l mio primo male.

----------------------------------------------------

As for love, perhaps it’s not

A flame yet extinguished in me

Through autumnal times of my not-so verdant life,

For the arc twists back to where it was forgot:

To strike like memory’s lightning every time I see

A gentle heart grip the bolt like a hot knife.

Love toughens most people through strife

Tempered by time: but ‘tis worse still for those like me who wake

Fresh rippling echoes of his original ache.

Sometimes poetry speaks; sometimes it does not.  This one speaks volumes.

Thanks for translating and sharing.

Thank you, Backwoods Boy! Posting this poem today makes me want to get back to Michelangelo's Rime. They have much to say, particularly about men loving men. We're lucky his niece fought hard to get them published -- unaltered -- after the man's death.

Thanks again
