By Chance or Appointment - 17. Equinox

And so the summer passes into autumn. Today is a day to look in both directions, back and forward. The light is still golden and green, but the cool and crystal blue skies foretell of the cold and frosty days to come.

Equinox

Maybe next summer,

when the sun breathes golden light

on the tall grass,

we’ll survey the sand together;

Maybe next summer

we’ll interrupt the waves

in their conversation at our feet,

and wheel in flying hearts

with the gulls over the water;

Maybe next summer

you and I will ice our drinks in the shade,

relaxed, yet dancing,

restless as young leaves;

Maybe next summer

a short chain of well-worn hands

will tow this old frame inside

where unspoken possibilities

ascend into probabilities;

Maybe

the shrouded summit we seek

will rush to meet us

as we climb as one

only to rest, bathed

in glory-colored light

for a season

next summer.

Thanks for taking time to read this poem written for a friend I have not seen in too long. I hope the new season is good to you. Any comments are welcome.

The only thing I know for sure is the equinox is twice a year and  summer is the focus here. So my best interpretation is this is the person's hope with a possible future mate even if I got it wrong it is very beautifully put

You’re very kind in your comments. I’m indeed focused on making next summer more memorable than what was missed in this poem. Thanks again.

This is absolutely beautiful.

Your unstructured poetry always touches me deeply.  Here you have written love.

Thank you for sharing it here with us.  xo

I’m so glad you liked this, and that it touched you. It was written from the eye of my heart, which longs for just a few more summer days. Thank you for reading and your very kind words.

I love all of your word-pictures, but this one I like best:

"we’ll interrupt the waves

in their conversation at our feet,

and wheel in flying hearts

with the gulls over the water;"

That particular description was one of the first in the original sketch of this poem. How wonderful it caught your ear as quickly as it did mine. Thank you for reading, for your thoughts.

When I lived up north, Fall was always a time of more than melancholy for me...I actually went into depression until spring and summer came.  From my own reading into the so wonderfully crafted poem you've shared is a feeling of regret that one didn't accomplish any of these things this past summer and a hope that next summer might bring such hope in one's life.  I sense a feeling of loneliness.  It reminds me of e.e. cummings' poem "l)a".  I absolutely love reading and reflecting on your poems, but this one has especially touched me.

Lovely as always. There's a clear sense of regret - a regret many have that there's never quite enough time to accomplish what we wish to do. But there's still hope. The year will turn and next summer will be with us sooner than you think.

There are never enough summer days for what one might want to do with them It will be 270 days until it’s officially summer next year, perhaps 240 if I use an unofficial June 1st date. My countdown has already started. Thanks so very much for reading and responding to this.

I’m so glad this touched you, but I hope this poem brought you no sadness. You can tell that it’s sad for me to watch summer fade with much still left undone and unsaid. It’s good that also came through. I thank you for reading and for commenting on this!

Thank you, but not to worry:  no sadness brought by this poem, but just a wonderful reminder of what joy I have now.  I always have more projects to do than I will ever have time for, but it's what keeps me moving forward.
