Telling time by fireworks...

Some people use clocks, others the sun, some get really crazy and ask someone else, but not me... 9:30 pm, rain or shine, Disneyland fireworks are lighting up the sky over my house and so at least once a day, I always know what time it is.   Anyway.   I've been listening to The Cab a lot recently. I can't really bring myself to listen to Panic at the Disco just yet. I know, I clearly have issues. Again, anyway. So the singer from The Cab is also the songwriter, and that translates to writin

Conservatives and Liberals

In political discussions, I've noticed distinct differences between Conservatives and Liberals.   Conservatives tend to bluster. They usually cite facts they have read from the various conservative e-mails that fly around, the bulk of which have been exposed as false by sites such as Snopes. That doesn't matter. They'll regurgitate them every once in awhile to rile each other up. They are convinced they are right even when they are wrong. If you don't agree with them, you are wrong. Perio

What I want........ What I need.

So my fiance and I made our first compromise the other day. I've been wanting to buy a street bike, and she's been wanting a new car. Technically, neither one of us needs either, but we both have our minds made up. So I made a deal with her..... If she lets me go to the Kawasaki dealer, I'll get her the car she wants. We both win.   Granted, my bike's going to be a lot cheaper than her car, but I understand that a new car is a much more practical purchase than a motorcycle. I should mention t

Two Must-See Films

Inglorious Basterds is the newest Quentin Tarantino film. It's about a paramilitary group led by Brad Pitt. Their job is torture and kill Nazis and return to their leader with Nazi scalps. It should be a gloriously violent film. Here is the trailer.   The other is GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It looks like a great film, and with today's advancements, the special effects should totally kick ass. Here is the trailer.   I must see these films, and I think everyone else should too.

Driving Slow in the Fast Lane

Any of you remember the "Far Side" cartoon on these people? It showed special chambers in hell, one for murderers, one for thieves, and one for people who drive slow in the fast lane? I wish I believed there was a hell; then I could believe there would be some justice for these morons.   Today I was motoring down the freeway and came upon a minivan (of course) blocking my way in the fast lane. The speed limit on the freeway is 60, everyone was going 65, I was going 70, along with the peopl

REPUTATION SCREW OFF

You think your cool cause you use the reputation system?   You think your hot cause I say something cool you gotta neg me for it?   Well... f**k YOU and your stupid reputation system.   Take that janky crap out so all the scared introverted losers don't have to go all negative because they did not like something you say.   Take that janky crap out because I can rep myself into positive (that is a glitch btw)   Rep system is fail and it'll ruin the site because people will get in rep w

Cheever wasn't cheery

For the past month or so I've been reading Blake Bailey's biography of John Cheever. Rather I should say up until this morning I've been reading this bio. It's one thing to suffer from depression and quite another thing to read about someone who not only was exceedingly depressed, but was drunk most of the time. I've done the drunk most of the time bit and it wasn't fun reading about the fifths of gin and whiskey Cheever was downing on a daily basis.   So why start? Well, I didn't know he was

Gumbo

There are hundreds of recipes for gumbo but I thought I would share an easy one that produces good results.     Ingredients:   * 1 1/2 cups crabmeat * 2 pounds shrimp, in shells * 3 quarts water * 2 small bay leaves * 1 teaspoon lemon juice * 1 small onion, cut in wedges * salt and black pepper * parsley * 1 pounds okra, sliced * 4 tablespoons bacon grease, divided * 2 tomatoes, peeled & chopped * 2 red onions, finely chopped

Sex on the Freeway

I had this rather surreal experience last week. I thought about blogging about it, but then changed my mind. I figured it might be a little bit out there for the prurient tastes of the GA crowd. But it continues to haunt me in a pleasant and unpleasant way, and I mean, what's the use of having a blog if you can't write about weird shit, right?   I had gone out with a few friends (boys night out) and drank, played cards, that kind of shit, and ended up being the designated driver since all I

Past, Present, and Future

It seems like yesterday that I left a small town in Kansas and moved to an outer suburb of Dallas. How do 7 months pass so quickly? It's crazy. So what is a still fairly young gay guy doing here? I needed a change in my life. I really did. As much as the mostly isolated area south of the KC metro has been home for most of my life, I was miserable there. At the time it was winter. I could not find a decent job, I was tired of the cold winters, and there's nothing there for someone my age. Sure, I

Back in the Saddle

I was pleased to land the contract: 30 stores from July to mid-August. As far as contracts go it was modest but for a solo operator like me it was just right.   I got the package in the last week of June that covered the stores and the scope of work. I was expected to come up with a schedule. The contract was administered by a nation-wide systems integrator that I had worked with from time to time. They would be skimpy on the hours but as long as I was good about documenting the expenses, thin

What defines 'Great' music?

When you think of the greatest songs of all time, what do you think of?   Motown?   Elvis?   The Beatles?   Taylor Swift?   Jonas Brothers?   Personally, I think of all of the above (*cough*). But while I make fun of Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers, the idea of what constitutes great music is entirely subjective and the topic of endless debate amongst both friends and colleagues alike.   Is it beautiful lyrics? A talented singer? A great producer? A catchy hook? A memorable

Buicks

Anyone ever driven a Buick? They're designed solely and completely for old people. They are soft and cushy, so those brittle old bones won't get shaken up if the car hits a bump. They're quiet so old people can't hear everyone honking at them, although that's not really all that important. Just turn the hearing aid down. But they're like land yachts when it comes to take a corner, wallowing through the sea that is the road, listing dramatically either way. That doesn't matter to the elderl

Take My Hand...

I think that I'm ready for this week to be over. That okay with everyone?   A run down, if you will...   Panic At the Disco lost two members this week. Ryan (guitar) and Jon (bass) and they are off to try and pursue their own creative goals or something like that. Good for them, I guess, but it's really sad to me for a lot of reasons. Anyway, Brendon and Spencer, the remaining members appear to be working their asses off while dealing with all this before going on tour in a couple weeks with

Have a cookie

So I read a story about the Stella Doro factory closing in the Bronx, and I started thinking about a cookie I used to eat at my grandparents' house when I was probably no older than about five or six. They were Stella Doro cookies, but they were topped with Sesame Seeds. They were perfect for dunking in hot chocolate and would be great to dunk in my morning cup of coffee...I say would be because I found out Stella Doro stopped making them a few years ago.   Now aside from the fact that I won'

WTF is wrong with the letter "y"?

Really. What did "y" ever do to the gay community to get it removed from their language? Why does boy have to be boi? Why does hey have to be hai? Is that supposed to be cute? A way to distinguish gai people from other people. A wai to describe or delineate other members of the gai communiti? What's next? Mai Dai celebrations? Will the holidais change too? I find this almost as irritating as Randy Jackson calling everyone "dog".   I'm not convinced that such differentiation does t

Amazing people

So just for the record before you read/ watch this I'm not American.   I may not agree fully with the war, but I have the up most respect for all the service personnel, regardless of the country they come from.   I saw this and it touched my heart, I hope it does yours too.   The way we get by   As I'm in the UK, I don't get PBS programming, so the trailer and story are all i've seen, but its still pretty amazing I think.   Enjoy.

Reputations and Heresy

I logged on tonight, ready to head off to bed, and went to check my profile to make sure no one posted something obscene or anything in the comments section, and I noticed that my reputation tag had changed. It said   Reputation: 106 Someone Might Think I'm Dom   Now that's f**king funny. Even if it is heretical: I'm a Domaholic who's way beyond any 12 step program.   I'm trying to figure out who did it. Joe is suspect numero uno.

Return

Okay, I seem to be getting over whatever it was that had me down.   It's not that happy days are here again, but the sun is shining and I'm looking forward.   I've returned to working on The Artists. This gives me two long stories to write, learning Spanish, learning my digital camera, forcing myself to read poetry, and coping with near constant pain in my knee. I might even tackle an upcoming Anthology.   I did not get a new knee. I am not old enough. Replacement knees only last 15 to 20

Two Kids and a Dog

Scott and I went to a housewarming party for some friends of ours, a straight couple, recently. It was a fresh change. I don't socialize with straight people very often anymore, and when I do it's usually in some type of "gay" setting and they're the minority. So it was weird to go to a party at which Scott and I were the only two gays. It was fun though, I really like the couple and their friends were nice.   There were a couple of small kids there. A four year old girl and her baby brot

airport anecdotes - 1c each

I'll keep this session brief.   Summarize my fourth of july: sex, drugs, sex, fireworks, old glory and her greatness. Hang over.   I went to Portland for that. Why? I have no idea. It was cheap (at least from what we got/we being my friends and I). I had fun, they had fun. The weather was "cool" figuratively and literally. I hate V necks and douche bags who wear them when they should not. I've never had so much coffee in my life while in Portland.   I'd like to consider myself a professio
