Please, Sir (or ma’am), may I have some more?

    By Valkyrie

Short stories can be many things – a complete story, a character sketch, or an experiment in form. They are, by definition, short, which may leave some readers readying the torches and pitchforks.  @wildone asked a question in our last guest blog about what to do when readers are clamoring for more, and you want to continue the story, but not necessarily at that moment. It’s a great question and one I deal with on a regular basis since I primarily write short stories.  I’ve gotten quite adept at

August Signature Author Feature: Gone Fishing by Headstall

Well, August has nearly come and gone if you can believe it not. I chose this story by Headstall because as my summer comes to a close I felt a certain kinship with the description of shattered dreams. Where have all the days gone and all my plans to achieve ended...? How often do we ask ourselves that.... Length: 11,332 Description: This is a story of life, dreams, and timing. Anthony's life has come full circle as he retreats to his small home town on a northern Ontario river.

Weekly Wrap Up (Aug. 13 - Aug. 19)

Nothing to complain about age this week  I wanted to discuss something, but this blog would be then directed to the Pit   Let's talk about unicorns 🦄   I'm a big Tolkien fan and I have no difficulty after reading the stories and believing that all the species that are in Middle Earth, might have at one time been actually on earth. Like maybe prior to the dinosaurs and Middle Earth was destroyed due to some calamity too. Or, what if we finally find life on another planet and it is

Time Jumps

Time Jumps I think if I had a time machine, and went back about ten to fifteen years to meet my older self, I kind of wonder whether either one of us would really recognize one another at all. It’s a weird idea, but I don’t think we would. I certainly don’t think we’d get along. LOL! That was still the undeniable ‘work in progress’ part of me, and me now? I probably wouldn’t come off as being much fun at all. That would be crazy. The thing is, I know that a LOT has happened in my life s

A Picnic of Prompts

The lazy days of summer are nearing their end.  With it go the sunny mornings at the beach,  a hamper filled with cold, refreshing food and drink.  Slipping away are the baskets with containers of fried chicken, potato salad, and a bottle of chilled sauvignon blanc.  Before you know it, the hot dogs and ice cream from the back of a food truck are driving down the dusty road away from you.   In the meantime, let's practice writing about some food and crafting scenes around the sight, smell,

2023 Anthology - Leap of Faith - Roll Call!

Who's getting excited for the annual GA Anthology?   The deadline for submission to the Proof Team is October first, which is approaching fast.  It's only six and a half weeks away! 😮 We accept submissions at any time, so send on your stories as soon as they are finished.  I've started threads in the Anthology forum for the guidelines, discussion, and links to stories.  I'm hoping to have two stories this time around, so fingers crossed I can get them both finished in time.  Who else

Weekly Wrap Up (Aug. 6 - Aug. 12)

I think I am going to rename this blog from Weekly Wrap Up to Steve's aging blog   My question to you this week is this. Do you know you have something to do, but before you get to it, you are distracted by multiple other things?  Case in point, I sat down over an hour ago to start on the Weekly Wrap Up, didn't happen. Logged into GA, noticed the few notifications so started weaving my way through those. Then there is a few topics that I'm following that I see people posted on. Then I like

The Pick Up Game

The Pick Up Game Soooo...I have to admit to being truly intimidated by a project that I’ve been working on for almost two years now...but if I don’t just dive in head first and friggin’ DO it...then I’ll never get it done. I’m well aware of the fact that I have been, and always will be, my own worst critic. There’s no side stepping that. it’s just a part of who I am. And while it can scare me out of posting and letting people see what I’ve written on most occasions...it can also be cons

Author Guess Who? Incoming!

What? Where? When? Why? Who? By the power vested in my fingietips and the GA blog squad, it is my great pleasure to announce the revival for a site-favorite blog game... Author Guess Who? First things first! A monumental thank you goes to @Renee Stevens for starting this whole thing back in 2019. For several of our online community, we loved getting to know our fellow writers in a fun and quirky way. With that said, we're keeping this proverbial gravy train going, even for the wei
