In the last couple of years, I have become an avid watcher of the live-action medium of Asian BL (Boys Love) dramas. Now I am not remotely the target audience for such dramas, but I hav

It was a lot of highs , it was a lot of lows . No, I did not borrow this from Dickens . Yet I, and you hopefully made it through it.
I, like others have noticed the huge switch has been flipped since we hit September here in my neck of the woods. It seems like it was late June and I was talking about the sun being seen close to 10:30 at night. Now, it is like at 6:15 someone turned the lights out and we all went to bed for the fall and winter Maybe
It's starting to feel like Fall here, with a few hot days thrown in. It's mainly been cool, and the trees have even started to turn. I love it. Fall is my favorite time of year, with the beautiful Northeast foliage and cool temps. It's time to pumpkin spice all the things!
It's also back to school season, which means more traffic and lots of cranky people. Let's write about the beginning of Fall.
PT Prompt #303:
You've decided to go back to college at age 40.
What does the Anthology Proof Team do? Once your anthology story is finished and edited, then it's time to send it to me so I can assign a Proof Team member to give it a final once-over. Why do we do this? To ensure that stories meet site guidelines and basic editing standards. We look for anything the author and their team may have missed - misspelled words, misused words, unintentional grammar mistakes, punctuation. I have a great team of knowledgeable proofreaders ready to go with their r

In light of the time of year, the start of the school year for so many from preschool to college, and the nearing deadline of the coming anthology, I wanted to feature a past anthology with a school tag. I plugged in those filters (have you tried that system?!) and viola! This month readers get to enjoy Cliff's Pendant, a short story written by Altimexis for the 2021 Fall Anthology themed "An Unconventional Gift". Where did the summer go? In my neck of the woods, Labour Day is the unofficial last day of the summer season. Not that we will have a blizzard blowing in on the 2nd, although some people think that happens in Canada (not naming names) and yet we still have summer weather all month. Just things kind of slow right down. Resorts are quieter, kiddies are back in school, big kiddies are in uni/college/trade school, etc.
I decided to take a work week out of town last week
Good writing engages the senses, so let's explore some ways to do that.
PT Prompt #301:
Choose a sense and then describe something related to that sense to someone lacking that sense. For example, describe colors to a blind person or music to a Deaf person.
PT Prompt #302:
Write from the POV of an individual experiencing sensory overload. It could be too much noise, light, touch, etc.

Classic Author Libby Drew wrote a great guest article a couple of years ago about her take on writing short stories. Since this year's anthology is fast approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to re-feature it.

In storytelling, a bucolic setting—defined by idyllic, rural, and pastoral landscapes—serves as a powerful narrative tool that goes far beyond simple background decoration. Writers and filmmakers use bucolic elements to manipulate pacing, contrast character growth, and ground abstract themes in tangible visuals,
Here is why bucolic settings are so important in storytelling:
The Archetype of the "Safe Haven": Bucolic settings often represent the ultimate emotional anchor or the "St
The word bucolic comes from the ancient Greek word boukolikos (βουκολικός), meaning "rustic" or "pertaining to herdsmen". It combines boûs (βοῦς) meaning "ox" or "cow" (which also gives us words like bovine) and -kolos (-κολος) meaning "tending" or "keeper", and together they form boukólos (βουκόλος) meaning a "cowherd" or "oxherd". The Greek term passed into Latin as būcolicus, keeping its association with herdsmen and pastoral themes.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED)
A harbinger in storytelling is a person, object, event, or symbol that foretells or announces an upcoming development—such as a major plot twist, a character's downfall, or a shift in tone.
Why Harbinger Matters in Storytelling:
Builds Anticipation and Suspense: A harbinger plants a seed in the audience's mind. Readers or viewers begin to guess what will happen next, creating emotional investment and tension.
Creates Structural Unity: When a future event finally arrives, a well-pl
A harbinger is a person or thing that signals, foreshadows, or announces the approach of another or an event. It is derived from the Old French herbergeor (host or provider of lodging) and the verb herbergier (to set up camp or take shelter). It is rooted in the Proto-West Germanic compound *harjabergu, meaning an army camp or shelter (harja meaning "army" and bergu meaning "protection" or "shelter") and shares the same Germanic root as the word harbor.
