your prefered books

As usual, the books you have near your bed are those you like to read over again. I am a “maniac” reader, used to read very quickly (I followed a course years ago for that) but what I like most is to have my preferred books on my small book case near my bed, so I can take one in the middle of the night and enjoy the reading of old phrases I almost know by heart.

My questions: have you the same habit and which books do you like to read over again ?

Here as an example my list (in disorder):

- Carl Gustav Jung : Memories, Dreams, Reflections

- dkstories: all the DO stories

- John Le Carr

Theses are the books by my bed.

I have the gift and bane of remembering stories, the top three are the only ones that I have read more than once. The Lord of the Rings, six or more times.

The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien

Dio Beckstead Stories

Josh, Evolving by Cole Parker

The others, I just need to read a paragraph or two, and it all comes back.

Slide Rule by Nevil Shute Norway

War and Peace by Tolstoy

Deserts by James Martin

Kreszig Advanced Engineering Mathematics by Erwin Kreyszig

Mabingion In English

Foundation Series by, Isaac Asimov

Diggers by Terry Prachett

Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum,

I have not made up my mind yet.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowlings

My two absolute favourite novels are Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and it's sequel Son of a Witch both authored by Gregory MaGuire.

Some other favourites of mine include:

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown, which of course leads up to The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. But I actually liked Angels & Demons more.

I'm currently reading the His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman. (The first book is going to be a motion picture in theatres around December, The Golden Compass

I also love the Inheritance Trilogy by Christopher Paolini. I cannot wait until the third book comes out next year. I must say that I liked Eldest more than Eragon.

The one other thing I cannot wait for is the sequel to Son of a Witch.

I pretty much enjoy anything by Gregory MaGuire. He's my favourite author.

Last but not least, the Harry Potter books are among my favourites

Yes, there're a few such stories-

JK Rowling- Harry Potter series (I have stopped counting the number of times I read)

Jude Devereaux- Remembrance

Dab Brown- Angels and Demons, Da Vinci Code

And a few online stories which I do like to re-read-

Dom Luka- A Lo(n)g Way

Ryan Keith- Kayden Series

I expect the list to grow as I grow older.

Take care,

In no particular order...

James Clavell - Shogun, King Rat

Robert Jordan - The Wheel of Time

Ayn Rand - We the Living, The Fountainhead

Friedrich Nietzsche - The Twilight of Idols

Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion, Climbing Mount Improbably

Dante - The Divine Comedy

John Grisham - Everything he's written

And lots more. Some books, like Grishams, I like to read on a rainy afternoon at Starbucks and others, like the more heavy intellectual stuff, is a once-in-a-while read that makes me really think about stuff.

Let's see.

The Catcher and the Rye - A really good book wrote by, J. D. Salinger.

The Chronicles of Narnia - Every book is good as well by, C.S. Lewis.

Eragon and Eldest, Christopher Paolini. I've currently not re-read these books, but I will have to before I start the last of the trilogy.

Nicholas Sparks books are grand as well.

You HAVE to look these up. You won't regret it.

The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks. Rereading this, and its sequel, The Dark River, right now. Like a modern 1984. With swords. They both are great.

House of Leaves and Only Revolutions by Mark Z. Danielewski. House of Leaves is one creepy, scary book. And Only Revolutions is indescribable. Revolutions starts at Nov 22 1863 (the Civil War) and continues for 200 years until Jan 19, 2063 while the two lovers always remain 16. Oh, and you have to turn the book over to read both points of views. And there is history in the margins of what happened that particular day, like on Jan 26, 1998, the first thing in the margin is "Clinton and Monica Lewinsky." Read it!

Melusine by Sarah Monette. Melusine is really just the first in the series followed by The Virtu and The Mirador. Great book. Fans of gay fantasy won't be disappointed.

I tend not to reread things but the one collection of stories I keep coming back to is the Shrelock Holmes mysteries. The original stories were written by Sir Conan Arthur Doyle but there were many imitators and many of them good.
