Benji Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 ..........I mean it is Tennessee after all! http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/MindMoodN...6408&page=1
painservedcold Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 You're not surprised because you've come to expect insane antics like this, and because its just one more way in which the heterosexually-run society we all live in finds a way of sticking it to us.
Drewbie Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Ugh, I can understand/ would expect gay porn, but come hrc to or a help site for gay teens..
old bob Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Fighting for gay rights is fighting for Democracy ! Thanks to UCLA, I hope this fight will success. Once more DK stories (I mean DO's) show "realities" about homophobia in High Schools !
MikeL Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 ..........I mean it is Tennessee after all! http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/MindMoodN...6408&page=1 I'm sure you didn't intend anything negative about Tennessee, Benji. I mean, surely you are not prejudiced against, or guilty of stereotyping, the citizens of various states. Reading the full story linked clearly shows that the practices in a few school districts do not meet the policies which have been adopted, policies which are supportive of gays. Tennessee has 95 counties and some of the cities have their own school districts, resulting in 135 school districts in the state. Just because the Tennessee ACLU sent a press release to the media about several districts in the state doesn't mean Tennessee is the only state with a practice which might be considered discriminatory despite policies which prohibit such discrimination. It may mean only that the Tennessee ACLU is actively pursuing this issue at this time. You may wish to read this summary of recent ACLU press releases on similar cases. One of the these cases involved San Francisco. San Francisco? No big surprise there, right?
Arpeggio Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 (edited) Ugh that's so stupid. Edited April 18, 2009 by ArpeGGio
Mark Arbour Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 This is just anecdotal conjecture on my part, but my personal experience in Tennessee reminds me somewhat of my "home" state of Missouri. There are many areas of idiocy and intolerance, but there are also oases of free thought, open minds, and tolerance.
DragonFire Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 I just find it hard to believe that they've been able to get away with it for so long. If it was porn I could understand it, but all barring all LGBT sites is a disgrace.

I apologize for offending the great state of Tennessee, I did indeed stereotype it for the actions of a few. I should have keep my 'remark' focused on the School District's inane policy!

MikeL Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 The ACLU has acted on its earlier threat and has filed a lawsuit against the public school systems in Nashville and Knoxville. Tennessean article is at Metro Schools sued over block on gay web sites.
JamesSavik Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 The media has done such a hatchet job on the Internet that parents are scared shirtless of it. They think a perv is going to jump out of the cd-rom bay of their computer and abduct their kid. The school boards say "filter" and parents are predisposed to go along with anything regardless of how stupid or overboard. We all know how level headed and reasonable people in school administration are, especially in the sticks where they fondle snakes and kindergardeners in church.
Jack Frost Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) I just find it hard to believe that they've been able to get away with it for so long. If it was porn I could understand it, but all barring all LGBT sites is a disgrace. I had my computer privilege revoked in high school because I visited a GLBT site. But then I was about to graduate in a couple months, so I didn't make a fuss out of it. The way the principal revoked them was very rude... They didn't even tell me about it and it took me over a week to figure out why I couldn't get in. My teachers weren't very happy either that he didn't tell them as well. Then a little later after I was told, my teacher secretly told me that he told her the reason: a gay site. Obviously I was extremely embarrassed and I didn't say any more. I wasn't out then. MikeL Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Metro Nashville schools have revised the software which previously filtered out gay- and lesbian-themed Web sites in response to an ACLU lawsuit filed two weeks ago. The change will affect more than 100 school districts in Tennessee. Tennessean article at Nashville schools unblock gay-themed Web sites.

Has anyone read some of the comments, below the article, mostly all of them is condemning it, it's not going towards porn, half of it's saying we are trying to convert there kids.. obliviously, I don't think the county wanted to change it. Mark Arbour Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 They think a perv is going to jump out of the cd-rom bay of their computer Which brand do I buy for that option?
Former Member Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 School systems are weird. I once got my computer priveledges removed for 2 weeks for playing "Voilent games" on the computer. I was playing Poppit! on pogo.com where you take your little pin and pop balloons oh yeah so violent. Best was the guys in my computer class who didn't like me because i wasn't Computer smart enough drawing stick figures of me having sex with other guys. And me telling them "$50 and maybe i'll consider that position". Then them hacking my school account deleting all my school work. School account they never would let you change your password and your user name was always your last name and the year you were born. So easy to crack. After awhile i begged and begged and changed my password to a crazy long In this other class i took we always had to make things move on the screen through coding i didn't understand half of it and you weren't allowed to talk to the people beside you. I'd glance around at the other peoples computers and found a way to use this built in messager service to ping people for help so i'd ping my friend who sat WAY across the room. Teacher caught on 1 day and goes "Why is this part of your coding named after so and so?" I tried getting out of it by saying "Because he's cute" That made the guy i was talk about who sat beside me smile and then we became friends ha ha. Good ole VC or was it VB Basic.?
