but I do think Unplugged in NY is a spectacular album

I agree. I have been a Nirvana fan since they were on Sub Pop Records back in 89'. It about drove me crazy when Nevermind came out and all the jocks and cheerleaders that made fun of my friends and I started wearing Nirvana t-shirts.

Other bands I like on Sub Pop Records

The Jesus and Mary Chain

Mudhoney

Sonic Youth

The Vaselines

mmmmn.... i agree with alot of the music here, my favourate genre/ subgenre at the moment though would have to be psytrance...for those who havnt heard of it, it is as the name sugest psyadelic trance, kinda like regular trance but with alot more sound and veriation it also mixs with classical alot, ne1 who loves electronica/ trance should check it out... good band is infected mushroom. love classical as well though getting into the planets series recently what else is good, like floyed, zeplin, eagles, simon and garfunkle, love jazz though i dont have much of it really, only the verve compliations and a few random albums, funk is good as well, so are break beats and Drum and Bass, well i like basicly and thing you can dance to.... nirvana is allright on occasions when im in the mood....... i hate radio head with a vengance, the music is allriight i just want to rip out the lead singers vocal cords  but yes neway......oh yeah i also dispise R'n'B (well the modern definition of it anyway) and Rap

some other random good artists:

John Butler Trio

Xavier Rudd

Cat Empire

Faithless

Crystal Method

Fat Boy Slim

Propellerheads

Jihad (aka pacifier)

Jeff lang

the Waifs

Powderfinger

Astrix

Astral Projection

Way Out West

Aphix Twin

Michal Franti

Cafe Del Mar (i know its not a actual artist or bad but its a dammn good set of compliations)

How could I forget to add Alice in Chains? Shame on me! Soundgarden too! Nirvana is a band that I don't care for, but I do like the "cheesy" or "sell-out" album Nevermind. I like Heart-shaped Box too. Mag will tell you that I am a cheesy hair metal guy. Though I do like the dark metal stuff that wasn't about hairspray. I liked the good time party songs and the aggressive-make you want to drive a 100 MPH songs. A lot of the grunge movement seemed to be about "wow, my life really sucks!" I can see why people relate to this but for me I like my music to give me something positive or help me release pent up aggression. A lot of grunge makes me feel worse.

Nevermind may not be my favorite of Nirvana's albulms, but to say they "sold out" is crap. They were signed to a major label, the same label Sonic

Youth was signed to before them. I don't think they really expected the "Grunge" scene take off as it did. It just goes to show how many people didn't get Kurt Cobain's music. Most of the album is making fun of those people.

"don't know what it means when I say ya"

Kurt Cobain may not have been a guitar god or the greatest singer, but he wrote great lyrics. A perfect sound with those lyrics would have taken away from them. It never made me feel worse it made me feel better. It made me feel like I was not alone. That someone else felt the way I did.

Sorry Mag, I used a poor choice of words there. I was not implying that Kurt sold out. It is my opinion though that the record company sold them out. They lost their raw sound with gave them their edge on earlier albums. The record company produced their album so that the suburbanite type of kids that picked on them in school would buy their records. Kurt never sold out, that was the last thing he wanted obviously. Many bands' best work is their early stuff because it is raw and has not been overproduced by the record execs who know nothing about music. All they know is marketing and copying what is already successful. Look at Metallica. I like the Smashing Pumpkins old stuff much more than the new. Art without success is art in it's purest form. It is pure emotion. The record companies are success driven though, not driven by passionate emotions.

Here's a list of stuff in my collection:

A Flock of Seagulls

What, no ELO? :lmao:

Ozzy but no Sabbath?

no AC/DC? No Zepelin --

dude you're a freak :P

This is just what I have on CD. AC/DC, Zep and Sabbath are on the original album format. [for the kiddies, that's what you play on a turntable. Do you know what a turntable is? (vintage audio info link))

ELO?

LOL

I won't even go into what's in my own collection. I don't want to get slammed for it.

I do like Nirvana, though. I'm also really big on the heavy metal music right now. I'll listen to just about anything as long as I can understand it, though.

I like a lot of 90's stuff. All my friends tell me I'm stuck in the 90's, which I guess might be kind of true. (by the way I Love the 90's of VH1 did a pretty bad job of portraying the 90's!)

anyway, I LOVE the Smashing Pumpkins, they are my favorite. and naturally because of that I love grunge. I like a lot of the popular bands around that time. Like all the "good times" bands. Like hootie and the blowfish, and DMB, and stuff like that.

I guess if I would have to put my style of music into catorgories it would have to be jam bands, grunge, roots rock (stuff like OAR), 90's pop rock, jazz, stuff like that... Pretty much if it melodic rock I would like it

Oh and I like 70's rock. Like Journey and Styx and Kansas. Great bands. And Rock Operas like Queen.

And I can't forget the showtunes... I'm an actor so naturally I like musicals. Not to mention I'm gay. haha, but I hardlyfit into the stereotypical gay actor catagory.

I kind of gave up on today's music. I just can't find much out there. I have to stick to new stuff that withering 90's bands put out. Kind of pathetic.

I listen to lots of music that most ppl have never even heard of.

I love The Gits and Sonic Youth and about last year I really got into j-rock(japanese rock) becuz it had been forever since any music really moved me, and then I heard a band called L'Arc~en~Ciel , and I saw a live concert clip and the vocalist Hyde's powerful beatiful voice drew me in and I couldn't get enough of them, and now I have all 10 of their albums.

Since then I have discovered a few other j-rock bands that i love as well. I think that I love them so much becuz they aren't as influenced by american music so to me it sounds really original. J-rock rocks my socks :P

Anybody listen to Bright Eyes?

I saw a snippet of them on Logo late at night while I was changing channels.

What I heard sounded OK, kinda weak compaired to what I usually listen to. I like some metal edge/power in my music so that I can turn it up and drive away the Baptist when they encroach on my territory.

A long time ago some idiot revivalist came to our school encouraging us to bring our albums (off of a list) to his crusade so that he could burn them. You can guess who was on his list. Kiss, Black Sabbath, the usual suspects.

When I saw Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, and Kansas on his list, I asked him why and he couldn't give me a straight answer. It was clear that he had never heard of the groups and didn't know what the hell he was talking about.

I got sent to the office for arguing with him about it. Seems you're not supposed to disagree with a preacher- especially when he's outrageously and embarrassingly full of sh*t.

Is anyone familiar with Madeliene Peyroux? Holy moly, Billie Holliday is alive and living as a 30ish white woman. Great voice, great style.

Sharon....where does one get her CD?

I also forgot to add "Scissor Sisters"...very "Blondie" to me...a combo of her sizzling sensuality and amazing voice with fun songs and hot ones and an irreverance about the craziness of life and "what is to you" combined with just fun:) and ok the Guys (both str8 and gay) are hot and the female singer is her own brand of sizzle...

I don't have it yet, but I'll let you know where I find it. I heard her on one of my tv music channels. She just hooked me in and made me pay attention and I made a point to write down her name.

Yeah, I like Bright Eyes. If you like that but want more of an edge, try his rock band, Desaparecidos, or the band he was in when he was 14, Commander Venus.

Well, according to Jack Chick, all rock music (including Christian rock) is actually recorded by Druids who secretly use drum-beats from Pagan demon-summoning rituals to get the listeners possessed by demons. That preacher was probably just trying to strike back against those sneaky Druids.

Anyway, back on topic...

I've been listening to a lot of acoustic punk lately. Defiance Ohio, Ghost Mice, Rosa, Against Me!, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, stuff like that. Something about the soft, folk-y acoustic music combined with the loud, gravely punk vocals just clicks with me.

Well, I clicked hip hop/r&b because I really love those kinds of music, but......

I also like to listen to old style soft rock. When I read The Log Way, I kinda made up a sound track of old songs that I listened to while me and my bf were reading it, and now whenever I hear those songs, especially one of them that I really love alot by the Doobie Brothers, I think about Aiden and Owen..:wub::wub:

My favourite artists are Above and Beyond, Armin Van Buuren, Smith and Pledger, Tiesto, Agnelli and Nelson, Inaya Day, Kristine W and Bodyrockers to name a few.

I like dance music, too, but these days I'm less into the uplifting, epic trance than I am the progressive trance and house. But, I DO like Above and Beyond, and try to listen to AVB's "A State of Trance" when I can. I did like Tiesto's latest In Search of Sunrise, though I don't much care for his other recent stuff. I prefer his Magik series. The dj I really like, though, is Markus Schulz. I love the Global DJ Broadcast, and his Miami CD is incredible. I'm listening to Sasha's latest, Fundacion, right now, and I can't believe how great it is. John '00' Fleming is a favorite, too, especially his White Label stuff. As far as house, I love Sander Kleinenberg, G-Pal, Sultan and Tone Depth, Steve Lawler, and Dave Seaman. My favorite (dance) CD will always be the Renaissance Mix Collection, mixed by Sasha and Digweed, and my all-time favorite trance tune is: Age of Love-Age of Love (Jam and Spoon's Watch out for Stella Mix.)

But, back before I forsook music with guitars, I used to love The Cure, Depeche Mode, Smiths, Black Flag, Pet Shop Boys (hey, I was a gay teenager in the 80's and they were like a lifeline), U2 (early, pre-Joshua Tree stuff), Cocteau Twins, and the whole early 90's shoegaze scene, including Curve, Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Verve's A Storm In Heaven CD, Slowdive, lush, and bands who briefly flirted with that sound, like Smashing Pumpkins (their Siamese Dream CD), Sonic Youth (Dirty), and the Cranberries' Everybody Else is Doing It Why Can't We CD.

Oh, and I used to be a HUGE Radiohead geek. I saw them tour for Pablo Honey and obsessed over every word on OK Computer, but lost interst in them when they decided to forsake guitars and pursue their own brand of "post-rock."

So (what, you're still here? You're REALLY patient) to recap:

Favorite Rock CD: The Cure--Disintegration.

Favorite Pop CD: Depeche Mode--Music for the Masses

Favorite Dance CD: Renaissance The Mix Collection--Sasha and Digweed

I found an album of these amazing dance remixes of "Pure Imagination" from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Ford, which I cannot stop listening to and love. They're haunting in a way, it would be great runway music.

Also in the techno world is the extended remix of "Filthy/Goregous" by the Scissor Sisters possibly my favorite song ever, and "electrobix" also by them, both of which I love. I've also been downloading more Le Tigre, my latest being "Nanny Nanny Boo Boo" very good. There's also a new Ladytron, and "Destroy Everything you touch" is a good one from them.
