grahamsealby Posted October 16, 2017 Posted October 16, 2017 In my meanderings, I often notice writers refer to their Editors. This is a luxury I cannot afford here in Australia, and I wonder how many authors can avail themselves of an editor. Does an editor materially improve the finished work? Does GA have a list of potential editors 2
Brayon Posted October 16, 2017 Posted October 16, 2017 i have a great Editor that helps me, and that's @Kitt. She does it in her spare time, and she came highly recommended by several people. She's great. But, yes. GA has a lot of volunteer editors who are here on the site. A couple of "tabs" over from Writers in this club, is where you can put a call out for one. I'd recommended a little bit of patience though, for someone might not answer immediately, or might contact you via PM. 1
Popular Post Solus Magus Posted October 17, 2017 Popular Post Posted October 17, 2017 Meanwhile, I am still looking for an editor. According to my Spellbook, I need a strand of unicorn hair, a couple of pixie wings, a glass of fairy dust, a scale of a dragon and grounded Hippogriff claw. Lastly, I also need a drop of a virgin's blood. Those things are basically non-existent these days. 2 4
Comicality Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Hehehe, you mean they don't sell all of that stuff at the local Walmart, Magus? I'm pretty sure that there are plenty of folks who are willing to provide editing services for anyone who is looking for them if you ask on a public board somewhere on GA. They'd be anxious to help. I think it's important to find the right 'fit' for an editor when it comes to your work, but you can definitely get some good candidates right away if you look in the right places. It always helps to have an objective eye. 4

I loved mine, but she got very busy and the story she was editing was a long one. She was the best and my perfect fit, but . . . alas. As for improving finished work: Hell Yes! Well worth finding one if you can. 3
William King Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 (edited) I have very limited experience of editors. I had one briefly until we disagreed over something. It helped to have a second set of eyes to read, comment, suggest changes, but it also added a lot more work of changing, and re-doing, sometimes only to come full circle back to where I started. I think my best editor experience was with Cia, for an anthology contribution, the only problem (for me, not her, lol!) is she is American and edits in American English. That's fine for an anthology, short story, but I don't want a book in American English - you can translate it after it's complete! Edited October 22, 2017 by William King 1
Hudson Bartholomew Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 I think editors are key. True, it is tricky to find an editor since (at least on GA) they are volunteers and do this work on their free time. But I think a good editor adds a lot. They can point out holes and gaps in the story that the writer may not see because they're too close to the story. They can point out if something isn't coming across in the way the writer intended. They can help catch things like grammar, punctuation, and typos. The key word here is a good editor, and one who fits with the author's style. Not every match will work out, but once you find one who does, it's golden! 5

Actually, where does one go about looking for an editor on GA? I'd like to offer my editing services, but I'm a bit lost as to where I could post that, especially with the new changes. Apologies for the somewhat off-topic request, but if someone could point me in the right direction, I'd be very appreciative. And, any authors are welcome to PM me if you're interested in an editor. 1

The tab marked Editors at the top of the page, in this club. 1
CscottyCA Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Thanks! The functionality works a bit different on the phone, so I completely missed the editor tab. It's much more obvious on my tablet. Sorry for the detour. Now, back to more "author-ly" topics... 1
