Popular Post kbois Posted July 22, 2020 Popular Post Posted July 22, 2020 I made the mistake of checking the news again. No more. I don't understand why there is so much senseless violence in this world. I'm not sure if it's made the national news, but down here it's been pretty prevalent. Last Friday three friends were murdered in a rural part of Florida and today they arrested 3 people for the murder. What upsets me most is the main suspect has been in and out of the court system since he was 12. He's now 27 and in 15 years has had 230 felony charges filed against him. 230. WTF??? Three friends in their early 20s, who only wanted to go fishing are now dead because the criminal justice system failed. My son is 22. I can't imagine losing him for such a senseless, unneccesary reason. My heart goes out to those families. 2 7

Popular Post MacGreg Posted July 22, 2020 Popular Post Posted July 22, 2020 It's challenging to want to be informed but also keep your sanity when it comes to the news. Sifting through media hype to get to the facts is more and more difficult each day. Makes my head spin. Going radio silent every now and then is definitely necessary for mental wellness. Like tim, it's probably best to pick and choose stories in small doses. 10

I have two apps, only one of which I glance at occasionally. I first saw the story over the weekend but when I got home from work today my husband had it on the tv, so I really couldn't avoid it. The house isn't that big. I made him put on old episodes of Match Game .....love that show! My high school is so tough (how tough is it?!). In shop class they teach us how to make ..............? 8

Popular Post Wayne Gray Posted July 23, 2020 Popular Post Posted July 23, 2020 It's difficult for me. I ride the line between being needing information and stepping away from the mindlessness of it all. There's a paralysis that comes from knowing there are problems that we can't fix, yet I feel the need to know what is happening in the world too. Personally, I check in with the news, then check out of it. I don't wallow there. I can't. Well ... apart from COVID-19. I don't have a choice there - my job depends on my staying aware of public perception, news, and advances on testing and supply chains. I've gotten pretty good at reading the tea leaves and predicting upcoming shortages to reagents and supplies before our own vendors and suppliers know they're coming. I consider that different, though. Because my actions are making a difference of some sort. I really do think it's harmful to us to hear so much terrible "stuff" and feel like we don't have a way to help. It's easy to let it pull us down, and we all have to take a break from it. 5 7

That line is the hardest of all to decipher sometimes. It's the mindlessness that really gets to me. It's hard to believe that a story about the severity of Covid can be side by side with a story about one of the Duggar girls wearing shorts out in public. I mostly try to stick with skimming the headlines and leave it at that even though it's necessary to at least be aware of what's going on in the world. Short of burying our heads in the sand. it's hard to ignore something that's plastered all over the place though, especially something so senseless and avoidable. Well tomorrow is another day and I'm hoping it will bring something positive. (Shouldn't you be working on your story??) 7

Sifting through media hype to get to the facts is more and more difficult each day. Makes my head spin. Going radio silent every now and then is definitely necessary for mental wellness. Like tim, it's probably best to pick and choose stories in small doses. I think the most harmful part is the news (if you could even call it that) is so sensationalized, some of us just don't want to read it anymore (there is a difference between tabloid and news, and in our time, the differences between them are very blurred). The more of us don't care about policies that affect our lives, the more likely the democracy would falter. And of course Einstein said something like, "The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who standby and do nothing." That's the real danger.... We're so sick and tired of the news, and we turn it off and not doing enough to stop the spreading of misinformation. The other half of me is telling me, "the most malicious things often started out well-intended," as I often don't know if my help would turn out to be helpful, so I am very restrained with giving any intervention. Unless something is seriously wrong of course. Reading all that badly written fictional "news" is just absolutely sickening and harmful to my mental health. When the awful trend started back in early 2000's, I was like, "OMG, the return of yellow journalism" that we read about in history class (except Internet spreads it much faster and wider, and free!). Of course, the media must re-invent the wheel and call it "fake news" to sensationalize it.... Why people just don't research what they read? (My cousin has famously said, "who has the time to do that?) This is not a new phenomenon and you'd thought we got rid of it decades ago, as more people have become more educated and sophisticated.... Oh, I see what's the problem now. 6 1

We had been writing notes but due to times we stopped writing because of COVID and you only were writing and then later it was just me, things were getting lost. With so many characters and story lines it was easily done. This outline helps us easily track things, we can colour code things as we need to, we can both see it and easily decide where things will go. We can write reminders and put them later chapters to make sure don't forget something. It is a brilliant document that we both need to finish this story. Thanks, Wayne, i'm grateful you took on the task. 3 6
Popular Post Mikiesboy Posted July 23, 2020 Author Popular Post Posted July 23, 2020 As writers we hear a lot about good and bad ways to write. Many spend hours discussing what style is better, or what POV is better. Ego is showing in dicussions on these and other topics when authors try to outdo each other saying BUT this or that is stronger or better or blah blah blah... Use the tools in your writer's toolbox... ALL of them when they are appropriate. Here is an excellent article on Active and Passive voice. 2 6
