It's true. They used to think it was the other way around, that we were ginger because we abducted people from Britain and Ireland, but as it turns out it's probably the opposite.

I'm reading a story on Nifty called Distant Thunder. It's about a twenty-something guy who has a familial obligation to host his eighteen-year-old cousin (just out of high school) at his "art studio" for the summer. Well, it's really just an old caravan that he rents for about $90 a month.  They're located on Pamlico Sound, which is my dream vacation destination.    So, I'm enjoying the story, but it could be better. Sometimes, the younger man sounds like Bridget Bellevue from Circumnavigation. "Is he 18 or 80?" I ask myself.

So off-putting when this happens, imo. Goes for all age groups. People don't talk like that!

Tells you that either 1) English isn't the writer's primary language, or 2) the writer hasn't read many stories with kids or young adults as the protagonist. Or 3), the writer is trying to show off how many fancy words they know.

I hate writing that tries to impress me... just be real... write about what you know and connect with, and don't talk down to me because I'm probably smarter than you.  JK.  That sounded judgey, didn't it... oh well....

I think we should be kind and encouraging, but we are always judging. It's part of writing... mine is judged every time someone reads it.

Well there is that however we had rain all day yesterday now have flooding Dughlas

Homemade beef stew for dinner. Beef, potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, cabernet and unsalted beef broth and seasoning, no salt. Started it in the crockpot early yesterday and left it cook all day. Cooled it and put in the fridge overnight. Reheated it this morning and left it cook all day. Thickened the broth with a brown roux about 2 hours before serving along with warm crusty french bread. Mum said after 2 days of the house smelling yummy she was really hungry. It was very tasty.

This is perfectly true, and they may yet learn. Although, they won't learn anything unless someone tells them.

I hear ya about the journey, Gary. I've quoted this all over the place before, but Gene Wolf once said to Neil Gaiman, when Neil told him he thought he'd finally figured out how to write a novel (paraphrased), 'You never learn how to write a novel. You only learn how to write the novel you're on.' Always a journey, and we are always learning.
