I can understand the tears at the end, Bryce was so filled with love he just couldn't hold in the emotions! Such a change from his previous life. Earlier in this story, I was afraid that Nicolo's family would be traditional in an ultra-religious way, but they are wonderfully traditional in a close-knit loving way! -
Thanks for the update. I had to read the previous chapter first. The enemy seems overwhelmingly indestructible, but Shay, Mira, Elia, and Yugan are a powerful team, more than just the humans and Mishith they are now, or the reincarnations of Mishith. Their power exists as a shared entity. I have a feeling the Herald is not gone yet. As for Lucas, I don't see him as a shoot first, ask questions later kind of guy. And Iskandar is not a cardboard cutout villain. It would seem that Iskandar is the aforementioned betrayer, but this is not a simple story! I look forward to their meeting. I'm intrigued by Nyx's role in all of this. Her destiny seems to be tied to defending Earth.

I just had another thought, could both the title and/or the oily blood refer to the female in the cage?

Kavan following did not surprise me, or I think Gideon. So now we know how Gideon came to the area, as a slave nicknamed "Angel", held by this horrible Armin. The ending was so packed with action, but I think that both Gideon and the mated wolf were mortally wounded, but not yet dead. After Kavan killed the lykan, he got some sort of power that allowed his blood to save Gideon, but Gideon drank too much and Kavan passed out. Whose "oily" blood saved Kavan? The aftermath will be interesting! Please allow the mated wolf pair to live.

These guys really know how to do birthdays! My fiftieth happened at the beginning months of the pandemic, during lockdown, not so memorable. Thanks for the tidbits about Cuba and the shipwreck. Nice job sneaking that quarter word in the first paragraph past Ritch!

Darien and Elias created some good karma, hopefully it continues.

I hope that Kendrick will enhance the team, not cause division. All their time has been spent running and reacting, Elias and Darien don't know much about each other, hopefully that will change.

I wonder if Kendrick will request to come with the boys? He doesn't seem a good fit for the sleepy outpost. It's a good thing they don't get fresh news, I don't think the magistrate would have been helpful.

I'm really enjoying this story. The nonlinear presentation enhances the "slice of life" aspect. I've said it before, but it couldn't be more true -- Bryce was tremendously lucky with parents, the second time around! -
Great comments on this story we all found this year, 11 years after posting! @raven1 I'm going to guess the colonists will be less than friendly, more territorial and "we don't get many foreigners around these parts", but hopefully not. @centexhairysubI believe the engineering section was torn off in a battle, I think it's totalled! @DohaI was thinking the same thing about Elias. He couldn't be any more useful, considering their circumstances.

Like @drpaladin, I had forgotten all about pirating, other than that episode of Seinfeld! The technology to pirate (VCRs) and sell them cheaply has come and gone in my lifetime. I don't even have a DVD player anymore. But movie theaters are still here, they just look a little different. There will always be some new way to watch tv and movies, but I don't think any of them give the feel of communally watching a movie on the big screen. The feeling is why they are still here.

I went back and read a few chapters covering Essell and Garjah's visit with the Galactic Council. The following quote was our introduction to the Aqnars: Alae and Lipro were both Aqnars and could not be exposed to sunlight. As one of the oldest known alien species on the Council, they were often the ones who greeted the newest. I didn't get a feel that they were either benevolent or malevolent, they seemed sort of balanced. I find it interesting that Garjah has a second house with another safe room. It would seem that he did not entirely trust the Kardoval for quite awhile.

Exciting start, this future feels like a space version of occupied France in WWII. What's on the surface (for show for the occupying aliens) is not the whole story.

P is a boy! And he is a singer. Great chapter. In 4 years he has gone from a shy, withdrawn, sad little boy to an outgoing, popular, happy young man. All because of his wonderful dads.

This chapter felt like a South Park version of Titanic. Great job evoking the feeling of chaos amidst nostalgic endings.
