  1. I sketched out the following moody Tanka several days ago. It sat on my desk, overwhelmed with thoughts of how to change it: alternate lines; different wordings; scrapping the whole damn thing. So this morning, I not only typed it -- keeping most of the poem as first scrawled -- but, as I completed it, suddenly felt an urge to translate it into Japanese. An interesting impulse, for the translation "finds the balance" missing in the original, and winds up beautifully optimistic. So, here they are, original and Japanese version. -------------------------------------------- Tanka: Proud moon from behind The now too-cloying cloud rolls, Once you gave me hope That I’d find a place to shine, When young, many moons ago. 短歌: そら そら を、 月の風見るば、 うれしい で 明日言葉は 輝く出るば。 Tanka: Sora sora wo, Tsuki no kaze miruba, Ureshii de Ashita kotoba wa Kagayaku dereba. https://translate.google.com/?sl=ja&tl=en&text=%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%82%92%E3%80%81%E6%9C%88%E3%81%AE%E9%A2%A8%E8%A6%8B%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%81%E3%81%86%E3%82%8C%E3%81%97%E3%81%84%20%E3%81%A7%20%E6%98%8E%E6%97%A5%E8%A8%80%E8%91%89%E3%81%AF%E8%BC%9D%E3%81%8F%E5%87%BA%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%82&op=translate

    -Gold on trees

    25.Gold-growing-trees.jpg

Gold can grow on trees. This actually happens. When a tree has deep root growth, it can “strike gold” and absorb it through a biochemical process and in turn deposit the mineral into the tree’s bark and leaves.

    -Julius Caesar

    06.-Julius-Caesar.jpg

Pirates kidnapped Julius Caesar when he was 22 years old. His charisma led the pirates to treat him as a friend. He insisted they double his ransom, which they did. He said he would crucify them when free, and it was laughed off as a playful joke. Upon release, he raised a fleet, returned and crucified them.

    -Toe wrestling

    14.Toe-wrestling.jpg

In 1974, drinkers in a British pub were bemoaning the fact that the UK didn't produce world champions, so they invented a sport that no one else knew about: toe wrestling. In 1976, a Canadian visitor competed and won, so with the point of the sport gone, the "World Championship" was discontinued.

    Chapter Twelve

@Summerabbacat, I guess I wasn't too fussy, being (at heart) something of a slut (my bad!) when it comes to sexy rockers *blush*. Benny of ABBA also had that piano keyboard thing going on: I still fancy myself to be something of a "tourist" around the 88's.

    Chapter 1

I used to work over the road much more than I do now, and I became passingly familiar with the I-88 corridor that starts up near Schenectady and runs down to Binghamton and, I suppose, beyond. On the way I saw a sign for Sanitaria Springs and I thought it was an interesting name, and as I do on many long drives for work, I tell myself stories. I did some research on Sanitaria Springs and sat down one day while I was home sick and wrote the entire first story. A mention or connection ( I can't remember which anymore) was made with the idea of the stories set in Baysville on the defunct Glass Onion, and so I asked others to come write in my town. A handful did, very independent stories with the only real commonality being that they were in the same town. Once Ryan started, we began a nightly discourse and - as he put it - his car broke down in Sanitaria Springs and we wrote like mad for a time. Several others have made stops in town over time such as @Cynus and @Ivor Slipper - but so far @Geron Kees has remained elusive. Alec has grown up over many years in my head, and I have no idea what he has planned. Perhaps he'll keep us informed.

    Chapter 13

😆 its 98 here sir. Get it together! I need your input!
  11. We can complain to each other. We are @ 98* actual temp, but the humidity is low so no "real feel" increase. Major surprise, the show this Sunday is being rescheduled. Guess high 90's and high humidity forcast actually sank in to the heads of the organizers.
  12. So Clo do you know about Beast of Gévaudan! Werewolf! The Beast of Gévaudan committed its first recorded attack in the early summer of 1764. 113 deaths and 49 injuries; 98 of the victims killed were partly eaten. Victims were often killed by having their throats torn out. The beast was reported killed several times before the attacks finally stopped. So I guess France is the place of hell!
  13. Interesting regional difference. Here on the East Coast, we're more likely to refer to freeways as expressway, and we don't use "the" in front of it. So instead of saying, "I'm going to take the 101 freeway", you'd say "I'm to take 95."

  20. It's not quite 930 in the morning and we are already at a feels like temp of 95. Should be somewhere around 110 by this afternoon.
