Twenty-nine-year-old Sam Miller owns a duplex on the beach and lives there with his fourteen-year-old son, Devon (Devie). He rents out the other half to thirty-five-year-old Taylor Winters and his fourteen-year-old son, Cillian (Cillie). The dads share an attraction to one another, and their kids have an attraction for each other. After the death of his parents Patrick is lonely and his life unfulfilled, in spite of being rich and able to indulge in his passion for creating unique art in his card shop in London. He longs for friends and for a romantic relationship, especially while creating Valentine cards. The chance encounter with a handsome Dane and his young son pitches the shy innocent cardmaker headlong into love and changes everything.

After one man dies in the real world, he wakes up to find he has transmigrated into Red Riding Hoodie, the worst novel he ever had the misfortune of reading.

As he awakens, he's greeted by the Re: Life System, who tells him his "account" is now bound to the character Hal Schuyler, the original hero of the novel (who is petty and a huge asshole). He realizes he has to change the story to avoid being killed by the main character's sometimes friend, Alaric. But the System has other ideas, not allowing him to act too out-of-character to avoid derailing the plot.
