Timmy's Journal - 41. American Tragedy

Inspired by Cynus' blog - 49 Celebrities Honor the 49 Pulse Victims

American Tragedy

Gaze at their beautiful faces

I do through tear-filled eyes

Listen to all forty-nine names

How many tears need we cry?

You say it's an American tragedy

Though cruel laws you still evoke

At arm’s length you continue to hold us

Your words are nothing but smoke

Well, we are here and it's to stay

Our fight is far from done

Remember each of the forty-nine

The day will come when we're one

Lest we forget.

You wrote something here that speaks very deeply to me. I was moved to tears. The last stanza, the day will come when we're one made me yearn to be better than I am, and hope for the strength to stand with those who need our help and protection. Your words humble me.

Not really my words, they are their words I think, and ours. The original last line was different; the day will come when we've won - but i slept on that. I don't want to win over others, i just want to be considered equal. So this morning as I read it, the last line morphed into what it is now. I think it's right. Thanks for reading and for your comments Parker..

Heartfelt and direct always has power over 'spin.' The line about American tragedy has a certain resonance with me, as soon after the event I saw a CNN reported rudely correct a pair of local LGBT guests he was interviewing outside of Pulse with the words: "This is not a gay thing, it's an American tragedy." His guests were stunned, but I would have gone ballistic. I do believe the time is right to introduce a new concept to the common wisdom, and hopefully change attitudes along the lines of the psychologist who coined the term 'homophobia' in 1967. Yes, all those people who deny Gay people a place in history should be called 'Pulse-deniers.' The time is right for them to get it, and see how they've acted for a very, very long time.

Thanks for posting this, Tim. You are brilliant.

"Your words are nothing but smoke" ... you nailed the sad irony and the bitterness we have inside. We're not stupid... we can't be fooled by lip service... I hope your last line comes true... wonderful poem, tim... Gary xo

You know how I feel Gary .. as far as I'm concerned we, all people are human and should be treated as such. Like dugh says, just allow us to be. I know things are not perfect here in Canada, but I think we are much better off than in some countries, even our neighbours to the south. Thank you Gary for you support, for reading this and for your insight. tim xo

This speaks as both anthem for those who remain and eulogy for those now gone.

I despise political correctness regardless of subject addressed because too often the "... words are nothing but smoke" ... may the time come when truth is spoken and we are allowed to simply be.

You're right dugh, leave us be, we pay taxes too. We work, we hire people, we contribute art, culture, children ... why is it okay to keep us down? Stop being afraid of those who are not you. Say hi to the Gay couple, the black couple, the Jewish and Muslim couples, talk to them and find there is very little difference between us. Thanks dugh for reading, your wonderful comments and your support. tim xx

AC, you're right it is time - beyond time for people to accept. Pulse was a gay thing in America and if the U.S. was accepting they maybe it would have been an American tragedy. It is time for people and their governments to get it. Maybe then we can work on forgiving them. Thanks for this great comment AC.

It took me a while before I could actually look at their faces, hear their stories without being furious. To hear all the bullshit, how different people/factions tried capitalizing on this tragedy without actually seeing us.

' Well, we are here and it's to stay' Well said, Tim. Thank you.

Thanks Adi. So many emotions surrounding this it's true. I watched the coverage via the BBC, which was more straightforward reporting, it felt more human to me. And the words at the end of the video angered me. We were in bed when i watched it and read that and Mike was watching too. But he's sees so much horror in his job, he looks at things differently, but I know he was angry. But when it was over i put on my light, grabbed my notebook and wrote just because i had to i was so pissed off. Thanks for reading this Adi .. I appreciate it!

Hey tim

You (and some others we both know and love) are my friend and that's all I need to know.

:heart::heart::heart:

As always, nicely done my friend

Thank you, Reader and I know there are lots of other people out there like you. You love the person, not what they are or who they marry or whatever and it's because I know that I couldn't use the original last line to end this. I don't want a war, just acceptance. I love you as you are, that's all we want in return.

thank you Reader... tim xoxoxo
