Love in the Shadows - 33. Chapter 33: Concluding Challenge

Startled, Vincent took a few steps back. His wolf growled inside his head as he faced another shadow mage. It's him! The guy from the parking lot. He leaped back and flicked his wrist, spawning an ice dagger. His instinct demanded he attack, but he hushed it. The monk did not move, and there was no sign of hostility. He's smiling, and his arms are behind his back. What's the deal with this guy? Is he an enemy?

"Not quite, young mage," the middle-aged man said. His tone was light and sounded sincere.

Vincent steeled himself. He heard my thoughts?

"That would be correct." The monk bowed and showed his open palms. "Please, do not be disturbed. I can not blame your alarm, but I mean no harm."

Feeling queasy, Vincent remained silent. If the stranger could read his mind, no thought was sacred. Gathering his courage, he asked, "Who are you, and how can you read my mind?"

Folding his hands, the man kept them in front of his beige tunic. "My name is Yakob. I apologize. I couldn't find another way to speak with you."

Smelling Yakob's peaceful pheromones, Vincent's instinct quieted. But It didn't stop him from being anxious. "I mean, you could've knocked on my door or something. But this is fine, I guess."

"Perhaps, but I wanted to see how your magic fared. To answer your other question, I possess telepathy. No thoughts are secret from me, but I tend to mind my own business."

It was the first time Vincent had ever encountered a telepathic mage. "Gotcha. Sorry, I'm still shaky about meeting you."

Yakob tittered, covering his mouth. "I would imagine so. Again, my apologies. The moment I felt your aura, I was rather curious."

Perplexed, Vincent kept a tight grip on his weapon. "I didn't know I had an aura. My teacher gives off a strong one, but she never said anything to me about mine." He bit the inside of his cheek. Do I give off a strong aura, or is it just weird or something?

The monk chuckled. "Yes, it's quite strong. It tells me you have talent, and from what I've seen, you could be a brilliant mage."

"Seen?" Vincent noticed Yakob look away, as if he had done something wrong. "Hey, I'm not mad. Just curious why you're watching me?"

"I came across your aura while traveling, so I’ve kept an eye on you from afar over the last few weeks."

Scowling, Vincent remained wary. So, he's seen me train with Elaine.

"Correct," Yakob admitted, "and I know you met with Mr. Gregoro. I didn't know you were acquainted."

The use of Stefan's name so formally agitated Vincent. "You respect that monster?"

The monk's demeanor sobered. "Monster? Has something happened?"

"He murdered my parents."

Yakob clutched his stomach and grimaced. "I…"

The man acted surprised, which interested Vincent. "You know him, but don't know what he's done?"

"N-no. For that, I am sorry. Dearly sorry. I met Stefan many years ago, and we share a short history." The monk shook his head. "I taught him."

The news conflicted the lycan. On one hand, the man who taught Stefan how to use his magic stood before Vincent, and it angered him. On the other, he understood Yakob's feelings. He's remorseful.

"Yes," the monk muttered. "What he's done does not reflect what I teach. We mages must use our power for spiritual gain while maintaining personal neutrality. Our magic is a gift, even an affinity construed as malicious."

Yakob's belief resonated with Vincent. It's like mine. I want the shadow affinity to be seen as the others.

"And that is why I admire you, young mage. You do not wish to inflict fear, but I find myself hesitant to believe you."

"How so?"

"I was met with the same sincerity from Stefan all those years ago. Three decades, to be precise. He acted the same as you now, but it seems he fell from grace." Yakob gave Vincent a stony stare. "You sound much like he did, yet I can feel your kindness. I have a difficult decision now. Do I dare take another chance?"

"Chance? Wha—"

"A chance to transform a mage into someone for the betterment of the world. You interest me, young man. I feel your aura. Frost, clairvoyance, and shadow… So similar to his. Meeting you is like a repeated moment in my life." Yakob circled Vincent as if to get a better look at the lycan. "No. You're different. Full of conviction. A will to be better."

The monk stopped and bowed. "If you would have me, I offer my services as a tutor."

Vincent gasped. He couldn't believe what the man said. He wants to teach me? Like, how to use my shadow magic?

Strange, his wolf said.

What's up, bud?

Instinct say no, but say yes too. No like teach Stefan.

Yeah, that's a bit disconcerting, but I trust this guy. Vincent noticed Yakob blinking wildly. "Is something wrong?"

"I must have missed something," he said, rubbing his bald head. "There are two minds inside you. You are a shapeshifter."

"Right, telepathy. Yeah, I had my first shift last night."

"Ah!" Yakob grinned and clapped. "Then congratulations are in order. I assume you were turned by the man you're with, the alpha?"

"Y-yeah, but how did you know Mace’s an alpha?"

"Explore the world for a few decades, and you'll learn. Speaking of, he's about to leave the house now."

Before Vincent could ask about Yakob's knowledge, Mason stepped out onto the front porch. "Vinnie," he yelled, "where are ya, Pup?"

Yakob glanced at Vincent. "Vinnie? I apologize, I never caught your name."

"Vincent Bolton, but Mace calls me Vinnie." When the monk flashed a thin smile, the lycan was curious whether Yakob was lying, but no significant pheromones were emitted. "How did you know he was coming?"

"I suppose that would be the first lesson I teach you, that is if you wish to learn."

Conferring with his wolf, he nodded. "I'm not sure when I'll find someone else to tutor me. Would you like to meet my mate?" When Yakob nodded, Vincent emerged from the shadows and looked at Mason. "Hey, big guy."

The larger alpha hopped down and sauntered forward. "There's my man. I'm all done with paperwork."

"Cool. So, I have some news, and don't overreact."

Mason raised an eyebrow when Yakob appeared next to Vincent. "What the—"

As Mason balled his fists, Vincent stepped in front of the monk. "Mace, relax. He's okay."

His mate growled, "Who's this?"

"This is Yakob. He's the guy I saw that day at Greenthumb. My wolf says he means no harm."

Yakob bowed. "It is a pleasure to meet my new student's mate. I hear your thoughts. I mean no harm to you or your pack."

Vincent laughed at Mason's flabbergasted expression. "He's telepathic, big guy. No dirty thoughts, please."

"Right," Mason muttered as he stared at Yakob. "Sorry for my aggression. I'm not used to strangers popping out of the ground. If Vincent says you're friendly, then welcome to my territory. You intend to teach him?"

"Yes, I am grateful for the opportunity. I've only met a handful of Alpha shapeshifters. You carry yourself similarly to the one I met in New York several years ago."

The couple glanced at each other before Vincent asked, "You mean Tierney?"

"Alpha Scott? You're acquainted?"

"Hell," Mason said with a smirk, "he's in town until this afternoon. We can probably meet up for an early lunch if you'd like to see him before he and his council leaves."

"That would be delightful. I've had a few conversations with him regarding my people."

Vincent asked, "Your people?"

"Yes, the monastery I'm from. We're a clan of monks that reside in the Appalachians near Vermont. Every now and then, we send a couple of monks to the city for supplies. I met with Alpha Scott, and his pack funded a much-needed renovation when we first talked. He was a warm man, but I can see he’s a commanding force in your world."

Mason nodded and grabbed his phone. "Let me call him and see if he's down for some chow."

When Mason walked away, Vincent leaned closer to the monk. "He likes you."

"I'm glad. He seems like he can be intimidating."

"Yeah, but his tough guy act goes away when he sees me all smiley. It's so cool you know Ty. He'll probably tell you when we see him, but he's retiring soon and going to move here by the end of the year."

"Interesting," Yakob mumbled. "Would you know who will be taking his position?"

"Yeah, his name is Cyrus, and he's here too. They came for my shiftday."

"How convenient! I hope to meet him as well."

Mason returned and informed them of lunch plans at JD's within the hour. Even though the shifters had just eaten, they were peckish. "So, Yakob. Not sure when you plan on training Vinnie, but you're welcome to our guest room whenever you need it."

"The offer is thoughtful, although I will likely return to the monastery after our sessions. Once I show Vincent where it is located, he’s welcome to join us for meditation and practice."

"Sounds like fun," Mason replied. "Everyone ready to head out? It'll take a bit to get back to town."

Vincent nodded, and the three got in the truck. Parking in the diner's nearly empty lot, Yakob hummed. "It seems Alpha Scott brought an entourage."

"You can feel them from here?" Vincent was impressed with his new teacher's skill. Hopping out of the truck, he saw the New York council from the front window. "Yeah, they're all here. Tierney, his beta, enforcer, and Cyrus."

Entering, Vincent sniffed. The only humans are in the kitchen. The two waitresses are pack members. I like this smelling thing.

The booth occupants glanced at them, and Tierney rose. "Yakob? Is that you?" He grinned and bowed to the monk. "Mace said he was bringing a friend, but I had no idea who. What are you doing here?"

Yakob greeted the alpha. "It is good to see you again! I was traveling and found young Vincent here, then his mate told me you were visiting."

Noticing everyone wouldn't fit in the booth, Mason and Vincent moved a table and three chairs while Tierney continued, "You remember Kaplan and Dirk? And this is Cyrus Vonder, my replacement as pack alpha for NYSP."

Cyrus stood to bow. "A pleasure. I assume you're a mage?"

"Yes, just as you are one as well. I detect your manipulation of lightning’s superb, but it could use some practice."

Yakob pointed at Kaplan's arm. The beta's hair was standing. Vincent was interested. I never noticed that. Is that because of Cyrus's magic?

Cyrus giggled. "Oh, dear. It seems I'm slacking." The bear closed his eyes briefly, and Kaplan's hair returned to normal. "Thank you for noticing. Shall I guess… A shadow mage?"

"Correct, as well as the telepathy affinity."

Tierney sat, prompting everyone to join him as the lycan waitress took their drink orders. "Cyrus, NYSP donates annually to a monastery in the Appalachians."

The panda nodded. "Say less. I'm unfamiliar with the agreement, and it will continue under my leadership. Do expect a visit or two, Mr. Yakob. I like to see where pack funds go."

Yakob nodded. "Our clan would be honored by your presence, Alpha Vonder. I am grateful for your promise of continued support for the monastery." The monk glanced past Tierney. "Dirk, was it?"

The bear grunted, "Yep."

"Interesting," Yakob whispered. "If I may, could I touch your palm?"

Dirk sneered and crossed his arms. "Why?"

"Dirk," Tierney growled.

Snorting, the ursus opened his hand, and Yakob cupped it with one of his, prodding the center of the palm with the other. "You… You're not a mage. Yes, interesting. Alpha Scott, spend some time with this one, would you?"

"What's that supposed to mean?" Dirk took his hand back, glaring at the monk.

Tierney squinted. "Are you—" Shaking his head, the alpha looked at Yakob. "You sense something?"

"I trust you still have that fireplace?" Yakob smiled and shifted in his seat. "It's faint, but I feel it. Have him meditate and focus on the flames."

All eyes fell on Dirk as he stammered. "I-I… I'm a mage? I have magic?"

"I believe so," the monk said, nodding. "Your energy’s deep within, surrounded by darkness. I will not ask for your history, but I recommend thinking about certain events in your life. The sooner you open your mind, the sooner your magic will ignite."

Vincent couldn't contain his excitement. "Dirk, congratulations! I'm so happy for you."

Dirk grimaced. "Why now?"

"I hear your thoughts," Yakob said. "It's not insane. Even an elderly person may gain an affinity. It can happen to anyone at any time. Heed my advice; it will speed the process. If you do not meditate, your magic might not appear for a few years. Meditate every day, and you will have it in one."

The bear appeared somber. "Alpha, when can we begin?

"This evening," Teirney answered. "Swing by around seven, and I'll have the fire started. We're working on this immediately. Let's see if we can make a mage out of you by the time we move here."

"Ah, fuck," Dirk cursed. "That means I’ll have to do a dance, doesn't it?"

Mason smirked. "We'll have you do a dance whenever you get your magic, hoss. From what Vinnie told me, it's tradition. Right, Pup?"

Vincent nodded. The waitress returned with their drinks, took their orders, and scurried to the kitchen. The topic returned to magic as Tierney spoke to Yakob. "So, I assume you're going to train Vincent?"

"Yes. We haven't discussed details, but I believe he will make a fine student. I'm learning more about him, even as we sit here. Vincent, you showed curiosity when I mentioned manipulation. Do you know what that means?"

"No," he answered, "I don't. Miss Elaine has been teaching me about my frost affinity."

"And how is that fairing?"

Mason chuckled. "He keeps whooping our enforcer's ass in every sparring match."

"Ah," Yakob said, tittering. "And is this enforcer talented?"

Vincent smacked Mason's thigh under the table. "Yep. He gave me a hard time when we first started practicing. I've never fought a shifter in their animal form before that. Caleb still gives me trouble from time to time."

"I see. I suppose I need to see how you perform." The monk glanced at everyone. "This is a healthy band of shifters. I almost feel the sense of brotherhood amongst you all."

Mason pointed. "It's pronounced y'all, but I couldn't agree more."

After a few minutes, the two waitresses brought their food. Aside from Kaplan's club sandwich and Yakob's salad, the group ordered a variety of burgers. Small talk ensued between bites. Halfway into his meal, Vincent asked, "Ty, you excited for us to come visit in a week?"

Dabbing his mouth with a napkin, the alpha nodded. "Speaking of, would you two rather stay with me or have a hotel nearby? It's pack-owned, so we'd book the presidential suite for you."

Glancing at his mate, Vincent raised an eyebrow. Mason answered for them, "Either's fine. You sure you can handle us at your place?"

Tierney chortled. "I'll make sure there's a few sets of clean sheets, if that's what you're asking." Vincent's face reddened, and Mason cackled. "That settles it; you're staying with me. I'll make sure to find my noise-canceling headphones."

Deciding a change of subject was needed, Vincent turned to his new teacher again. "You never explained what manipulation is, Yakob."

"It is the focus and channeling of one's energy. It is a vital skill to learn and master. It can be used to showcase your power, or hide it when needed. Some affinities require a basic knowledge of manipulation to exist within dense populations, such as Cyrus. If he didn't have his magic under control, hairs would stand."

"Like when I met Ty.” Vincent recalled the day he first encountered the alpha.

"Yep," Tierney muttered as a couple of humans entered the diner.

Yakob whispered, "Concealing your magic is essential for covert reasons. You don't want certain people knowing you have magic. Different affinities affect the mage's body in different ways. Lightning emits minute traces of electricity, and fire and frost can alter your ambient temperature. Clairvoyance and telepathy are more subtle. When you feel your eyes becoming sore, you're in the presence of a clairvoyant. A telepath can cause headaches."

Thinking of his own abilities, Vincent leaned forward. "And the shadow affinity?"

"There are a few indicators. Despite the affinity's reputation, one will feel a sense of calmness when around a mage. For the other giveaway, observe. Mason, could you hold your arm over the table like so?"

The monk and lycan's arms hovered over the surface, directly under the light. Each cast a shadow, but Vincent noticed the difference immediately. "Your shadow’s darker."

Yakob nodded. "Your lycan sight will see it better than a normal human can. These are the two ways to spot a shadow mage that is not utilizing manipulation."

Scowling, Vincent sulked. "So, I've been a flashing a magical beacon, huh?"

"We’ll work on it," Yakob reassured him by placing a hand on Vincent's shoulder. "There is much to teach you."

The checks were brought to the table, and while Mason, Tierney, and Cyrus withdrew their wallets, Vincent took out his phone. He saw a missed call from Caleb, so he texted, Sorry, G-man. What's up?

A reply came quickly. Wondering where you and Mace are. You weren't at the house.

No, JD's. We'll be home soon. We might bring a new friend.

Gotcha. I'll stay put.

Tucking his phone away, he turned the Mason. "Caleb's waiting for us at the house."

"Cool. Y'all are welcome over."

Tierney shook his head. "I'm afraid we need to pack up for the flight. We'll see each other again soon enough."

The group rose and exchanged goodbyes, but as they went to the register counter, Vincent whispered to Cyrus. "Alpha Vonder? Can I talk to you?"

The panda stayed back and smiled. "Of course, but if this is about last night, you don't need to say anything. I was merely doing my duty to assist."

"Still. I can't help but apologize for what I did."

"It wasn't you. Besides, it was an enlightening experience for me. I've attended a few first shifts that resulted in the birth of an alpha. Last night was something I had never confronted. In turn, I should be thanking you for the experience."

Vincent understood. "I didn't give you much trouble, did I?"

Cyrus giggled. "Don't take this the wrong way, but even with your shadow magic, my bear and I were more than capable of mopping the floor with you." Vincent gawked, which caused the bear to chuckle more. "I know we haven't had much time to truly get to know one another, but I've been around the block a time or two. Even Tierney would have a rough time, should we ever spar. I know of your visit's intention, so perhaps we should have a round while you're in New York, hmm?"

Vincent had to hush his wolf's growl, but the bear grinned. "I'll take that as a yes, but a fair warning"—Cyrus bent over to speak in the lycan's ear—"you stand no chance. Either against Tierney or myself."

He was shaken by the intimidation until his wolf growled. The animal relished the challenge, and it changed Vincent's attitude. He smirked. "Then I better use this week wisely."

Cyrus giggled again. "I'm looking forward to seeing your progress. Come, shall we? Everyone's waiting for us."

The two strolled toward the exit and followed the group outside. Tierney turned. “I see smiles. Want to share with the class?”

Vincent glanced at the panda and shrugged. “Just getting to know Cyrus a bit better. By the way, he says he can mop the floor with you.”

“Why you…” Cyrus crossed his arms, but when Tierney raised a brow, the bear’s playful demeanor returned. “Oh, Tierney. Do you think you could make me dance?”

“I could torch some toes.” Both men had a glint in their eyes. “I think when we get back, we should have a little showdown. For fun, of course.”

Cyrus whined. “Not after a flight. Perhaps we should plan our spar around Vincent’s trip. Enhance the mood and whatnot.”

“Agreed.” Tierney glanced at Vincent. “Now I have two bouts to get ready for.”

“That’s cute. I have three.” Vincent spun to stare at Dirk. “Don’t forget, you challenged me back at the airport when we first met.”

The delta groaned. “Fuck me with a golden railroad spike.”

The shifters shared a laugh before Tierney clapped Dirk’s back. “That’s no way to get yourself pumped for a fight. Besides, Lei’s lips were loose last time we were here. From what he said, Vincent can use his magic all day, but if you get close, he gets shaky.”

Vincent smelled the bear’s newfound confidence. Great. Now everyone knows how to throw me off.

Yakob stepped forward. “Ah, my new pupil will be facing three experienced shapeshifters in a week? Don’t soak in confidence, gentlemen. Much can be accomplished in a short amount of time.” The monk’s face grew serious as he looked at Vincent. “Even if it is one of the three matches, how badly do you want to win?”

Vincent’s wolf took control and glanced at his future opponents. “I want. Want win.”

“A warning, you three. I intend to show this young mage how to unlock his full potential, and you shall be his first test.” Focusing on Vincent again, Yakob’s expression was stern. “As my pupil, we start now. Use your ambition as fuel, and your goals will come to life. But our training will be harsh. Meals and sleeping will be our only breaks, understood?”

Blown away by the monk’s sudden passion, Vincent smiled. I really needed this kick in the ass. If I’m going to take down Stefan, I need every push and shove.

Your spirit is admirable. Yakob’s voice spoke softly inside Vincent’s mind, surprising him. Be warned, I will test your limits. You need to be much stronger if you wish to face either of those alphas, let alone Stefan.

Hearing the teacher, Vincent’s breathing quickened. You mean… Stefan’s stronger than Tierney?

I even doubt the other one could stand a chance. But you… You have the capability. I just need to mold you.

The hair on the back of Vincent's neck stood. He knew he wasn't ready to fight Stefan. Yakob's statement left him determined. He had to grow. The need to kill Stefan was strong. His wolf howled in his mind. You ready for all this, bud? You'll be going through hell with me.

Yes, want!

A familiar sensation twinged. He looked at Tierney's red irises. Knowing it was a playful challenge, Vincent responded by sending power to his own eyes. He gritted his teeth, and he felt them shift. Opening his mouth, Vincent was satisfied when Tierney took a step back. Licking his teeth, he realized they were sharp.

With his first challenge won, Vincent glanced at his teacher. "Let's get started."

This concludes "Love in the Shadows." Thanks to those who have read, reacted, and commented along the way. Being my first story, "Love in the Shadows" has a special place in my heart.
A special thank you goes to @Carlos Hazday. He dedicated his time and energy to teaching this numbskull how to write, correct my terrible word-choice, and taught me the power in shortening my sentences. You are amazing, and thank you for putting up with my procrastinating ass.
I hope you've enjoyed the story and continue the series. "Rising in the Shadows" is complete, as well as its sequel, "Death in the Shadows." Before you head there to binge, head back to this story's main page and drop both a recommendation and a review. Feedback is important, and it helps me grow as a writer.
Thank you again.

Note that bread is not totally vegetarian. There may be ingredients in bread that are animal based, but these ingredients do not require the killing of the animal from which they are developed. Milk being an example, as well as fats.

The use of whooping in describing a competition stems from the ancient word whup, He keeps whooping our Enforcer meaning to beat or overcome.

The use of whooping is intended. It's a very common word in this area of the United States (i.e.: The amount of times my babysitter said she would whoop my ass when I was little is disturbing.)

I want to thank you for this delightful and magical story.  There are so many great things about it.  As a writer you impressed me with the unique world you have build.  Also, your characters are so engaging that my emotions were always in high gear trying to get to know them better.  The strongest characteristic of your writing and my favourite was the great humour richly embedded throughout every chapter.

I expected the story to continue further, but fortunately you made good on your promise for Book 2, and I will not have to wait for some anticipated events to occur.  I love this book! ❤️

What a wonderful comment to wake up to!

Can you believe this was my first attempt at writing? All this came to be because I was a daydreaming grocery stocker. Just doing my thing one night, dropped a can, and stopped it from sliding under the shelf. For some reason, I couldn't stop looking at the shadow all night. I would have to walk back and forth, up and down my aisle stocking, and I wished I could just zip my way down.

Bingo. I started daydreaming, added a few characters, and here we are.

Thank you so much for commenting, raven. I love your outlook on my stories!

Superb!  What a great cast of characters you've lined up, (although  I'm still not sure how I feel about Yakob.  Vincent seemed to trust him right away, but Vinnie isn't always the best judge of people with malicious intents.)  What a great series of events have been put into play.  I'm ready to start the next book and see what else you have planned for our heroes.  That you for such a wonderful journey.

I'm thrilled you enjoyed it! I assure you, Yakob had no evil intent. I can't wait to see your comments along your journey through Rising in the Shadows
