Weekly Wrap Up (Dec. 29 - Jan. 4)

    By wildone

Some say it is too late 5 days after, but screw them ! I'm still going to say Happy New Year! Maybe without the fanfare, but on behalf of all of us here at the GA News Blog and GA, we wish all your dreams and hopes come true in 2025 🥳 It must be the sign of my age , but I was sound asleep by 11:30, with no real reason to stay up past midnight . How about yourselves? Did you ring in the New Year with a party, or just maybe yourself and one or two others? Did you have a refreshing alcoholic b

2024 Writing Events

As the new year approaches, it's time to start thinking about what's on the agenda for 2024. We've already announced one event for 2024, and the first story for Carlos' tribute has been posted.  I'm super excited to announce what else we have planned for next year.  It should be a great year with lots of opportunities to participate in site events! So without further ado, here is what's coming up in 2024.  2024 Writing Events Long May You Run - A Tribute to Carlos Hazday - Due December

Ask An Author 3.0 #35

December is here, and you know what that means... There's one song I'll be muttering under my breath for the next three weeks. No, it's not Mariah Carey's Christmas song. The husband is already wanting to strangle me for singing Trixie Mattel's "All I Want For Christmas is Nudes" nonstop the past couple of days. But you're not here to hear me sing, and if you are, you've come to the wrong blog article.  December also means y'all get another Ask An Author! Let's see, lemme dig around. I know

Twenty-Five Days of December -- Day Six

Happy Saint Nicholas Day! Thinking about cookies yet? An area of interest of mine is studying when certain food items were invented, and where. Devil's food cake, for example: Philadelphia, circa 1910. Angel food cake: Saint Louis, 1890s. How about toast? The ancient food writer Athenaeus tells us the cook's name and dates it to the 6th century B.C. So what about a more recent, but never-more-popular, treat? The chocolate chip cookie? Here we have one person's efforts at digging into i

Romance Deep Dive

Romance stories focus primarily on character relationships and development.  There is a strong trope in most if not all, the sub-genres for Romance for a Happily Ever After (HEA) or Happy For Now (HFN).  Violating the HEA/HFN trope should not be done lightly or at a whim, as this tends to turn off readers of this genre.   Sub-genres: Contemporary Romance, General Romance, Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance, Regency Romance, Romantic Fantasy, Romantic Sci-Fi, Romantic Western

Twenty-Five Days of December -- Day Five

Today, let us ruminate upon a remarkable Gay man's remarkable gift for food and writing: James Beard. In his recipe-laden1964 autobiography, Beard's boyhood Christmases in Portland, Oregon, are shown in all of their uniqueness. His mother ran a small hotel, and relied on a man named Let to get things done, in and out of the kitchen.   The Christmas sequence from Delights and Prejudices occurs in chapter 5, beginning on page 164  https://archive.org/details/delightsprejudic0000bear

Twenty-Five Days of December -- Day Four

“Well,” he said presently, “what is it that is wrong with Christmas?” “Why,” I answered, “all the romance, the joy, the beauty of it has gone, crushed and killed by the greed of commerce and the horrors of war.”  ----------------   Considering how jaded the world is, who said writing a holiday tale was ever an easy task? Surely, Father Time has perspective on his side, and is always willing to advise the young-at-heart if their ears are open   ----------------

Twenty-Five Days of December -- Day Three

One of the things I'm grateful for in 2023 is happening upon the recordings of a certain radio program. Proudly We Hail started after WW2 as a show of a mere fifteen minutes, but it was one dedicated to bringing true Short Stories to its listening audience. Under the writing baton of Tom Petty (yeah, not THAT Tom Petty...) some wonderful performances rang out live to everywhere in the world the Armed Forces Network broadcast.    To remind us how delightful the Short Story form can be (

Weekly Wrap Up (Nov. 26 - Dec. 02)

Its starting to feel a lot like Christmas... Well, I hope you all are getting in the festive spirit  Maybe not so much myself. The past two weeks and been nightmarishly busy at work and I don't know if I'm coming or a going. Hoping maybe tomorrow will get me out of my bah humbug mood, as we go out to the forests and find Christmas Trees! I won't be getting one as there isn't enough in room my condo, but at least it is the first Christmassy thingy I'll be doing   So what happened l

Invoking Nostalgia

Invoking Nostalgia Our lives, more often than not, come down to our ability to connect our current selves to our previous selves from the past. Being younger, more naive, more eager and energetic...remembering the lessons that we’ve learned, and the sometimes tragic mistakes we made that we’ve learned them from. Whenever you look at a younger photograph of yourself...you have to replay a ‘story’ in your head that will somehow cause you feel as though you and that person in the photograph are
