GA 4th Annual Playoff Pool

Sorry Basketball fans, wrong forum :P

As some of you know, some may not, I have run a playoff pool for the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs for the past 3 years. The prize has remained the same; a six month premium membership to GA or if you want, you can donate the money in your name to the operation of GA :)

We have had Matt win the past two years and seems to be ready to see if he can make it 3 in a row.

There is absolutely no skill or knowledge needed to participate, heck even Krista enters and she doesn't even know what a puck or icing is :P .

This pool is for fun, a little bragging rights but it is not to be meant as a highly competitive. I usually put in my guess (and suck :P ) but I'm never eligible to win.

First thing I like to do is gauge interest in people participating. So, would you be interested in participating this year?

Well, things got a whole lot clearer tonight. We know our playoffs will include the Rangers, Bruins, Panthers, Penguins, Flyers, Devils, Senators, and Capitals on the East; Canucks, Blues, Kings, Predators, Red Wings, Blackhawks, Coyotes, and Sharks in the West. The East, at least, has only 3 spots undetermined:

1. NYR vs. 8. OTT, FLA, or WAS

2. BOS vs. 7. OTT or WAS

3. FLA or WAS vs. 6. NJD

4. PIT vs. 5. PHI

The West is still a big fat mess.

So seems there is enough interest in the playoff pool, so here we go. First a few basic rules:

  • There will be one winner at the end of the 2012 Stanley Cup Hockey Playoffs. The winner is entitled to a six month Premium GA membership, paid by me :P . If the winner is already a Paid Member, they can extend their membership, or in the case of a Hosted Author, Moderator/Administrator, or even a member who isn't interested in the membership, they can donate the monies to the operation of GA on their behalf.
  • This is for fun. There is no entry fee, thus taking away the gambling. If you're a member here at GA, you are eligible to enter. I'm sure there is ways to get around the rules, but hey, let’s just concentrate on the fun.
  • The winner will be the person with the most points out of a possible 65. Each series winner is worth 5 points. In case of a tie, there will be an unbiased draw from the possible winners to decide the final winner.
  • Each round is a best of seven game series. I don't need to know how many games the series will be won in as that would make things complicated.
Round one series are:

East

(1) New York Rangers vs. (8) Ottawa Senators

(2) Boston Bruins vs. (7) Washington Capitals

(3) Florida Panthers vs. (6) New Jersey Devils

(4) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (5) Philadelphia Flyers

West

(1) Vancouver Canucks vs. (8) Los Angeles Kings

(2) St. Louis Blues vs. (7) San Jose Sharks

(3) Phoenix Coyotes vs. (6) Chicago Blackhawks

(4) Nashville Predators vs. (5) Detroit Red Wings

I’ll let one of the experienced guys enter their picks so you all can see how to put them in.

One question, since Trevor seems to have this Forum named after him, where is his acknowledgement that he is participating :D .

Let's have fun and continue to talk the pool up. The more people that join, the more fun it will be :) . I hope we have some female entries as well as some people who don’t follow hockey.

A quick note to those new to the NHL: the teams are re-seeded after the first round. This means that for both the East and West, the top remaining team plays the bottom remaining team. This is in contrast with March Madness, where an underdog that upsets a top seed "takes their place" for the rest of the way. For example, if Ottawa knocks off New York in round one, they do not automatically play the winner of (4) PIT vs. (5) PHI. They play the top seeded team still remaining.

My picks:

(1) NYR over (8) OTT in 5

(2) BOS over (7) WAS in 6

(6) NJD over (3) FLA in 6

(5) PHI over (4) PIT in 5

(1) VAN over (8) LAK in 5

(7) SJS over (2) STL in 7

(6) CHI over (3) PHO in 6

(5) DET over (4) NAS in 6

--

(1) NYR over (6) NJD in 6

(2) BOS over (5) PHI in 4

(1) VAN over (7) SJS in 4

(5) DET over (6) CHI in 7

--

(2) BOS over (1) NYR in 6

(1) VAN over (5) DET in 6

--

(2) BOS over (1) VAN in 6

Edit: picks revised in future post, but I'll leave this initial prediction here.

Okay, the NHL is being difficult this year....

Usually you can pick a day when all teams would have 2 games in, but not 3. So as an advantage, anyone can go in and edit their picks up to Midnight on 16th. That is the start of Monday morning :)

Some teams will have 3 games under their belt, so please use this to your advantage. After the Sunday nights games, I will print off everyone's entries so no more changes can be made.

Let the games begin!!!! :D :D
