So the train from San Antonio goes through Austin. From what he recorded of it, @mollyhousemouse it looks like a nice place too.

the hill country is beautiful

lush and green most of the year, with beautiful rolling hills.  not like the mountains i grew up with in Colorado, but still nice

this time of year, however, we have the beginnings of "Cedar Fever"  and you can see the pollen when it gets going full bore

i did this trip after i graduated college in 1987

One thing I've learned from watching these videos.

DO NOT get a Roomette as they are Tiny AF.

Do not go coach-class as it looks like it's pretty nasty on some trains.

The Superliner trains are by far the better ones.

It may take longer to get to where you're going, but it looks like it's worth it.

Always travel sleeper car, as the food is included, plus you get lounge perks like some of the different Travel Club members.

The food looks really damn good, this guy has been on several trains, doing these YouTube Docs, and to quote, "I've not had one bad meal on Amtrak. I'm not sure why it has such a bad rep."

Yeah, I'm planning a cross-country trip one day.

We don't have the cedar trees down here in Tampa, but the damn Grandfather Oaks is a pain in the arse.

I've never had a meal on Amtrak, so I'm not sure if they are good or not.  But I've only done short trips, usually up to DC or NYC.

It's literally a shytehole. They have an app for residences that tell you what streets are safe to walk on because no one has shyted on the street. Or have used needles thrown about. Most expensive city in CA, where you have to purchase a parking spot in front of your house which may cost more than your house, and they have a homeless problem worse than Chicago, Atlanta, and New York combined.

Well, not literally, A.. lol.

Two of my friends live in Berkeley and Oakland respectively. My cousin lives is Palo Alto and her parents in Hayward.

They have no complaints. I sure don’t when I visit.

The parking thing is in NY too, and I don’t know of apps, but the used needles in the streets, there’s neighborhoods here like that too. I know it’s not limited to LA, San Francisco or NY.

Have a good night all..

sleep well.

I took a day trip to Miami on Amtrak one. I was like 10 and it was with a church group. Don't remember most of it. I do remember that they had a cafe car, with a nice egg salad sandwich.

True. Most of what I posted were quotes from a few different news sites.

We have a bad problem here in Tampa too, with the homeless and drugs.

Further north, I've taken the Empire Builder between various points in Washington state and Montana/North Dakota several times.  I agree with what you said, except that I found a two-person roomette great for one person.  For two or more, I would be headed for one of the bedroom options, most of which have their own restroom and shower.  I've done coach twice when I couldn't afford a roomette, and it was rather ugly.  I always enjoyed the food, and met interesting people in the dining car (seating is arbitrary when you're single).  For your characters, I recommend reserving a whole sleeping car; there are enough of them, and they can afford it.  😏

Sorry miss molly, I forgot to comment on this. This stretch was on the California Zepher video too. Absolutely gorgeous.

Haven't watched the empire builder yet, but the next one on the list.

The "Trip Report" that was on the Zepher had two private rental cars attached at the end of the train, once they left Denver. I need to look that up, because you are correct, they could rent a full car or a private one. Though, with Jeremy and Travis being 15-y/o in the story, they are considered "youth" by Amtrak.

@mollyhousemouse the candle is lovely in itself but even better as a DIC tradition. Good night and happy dreams, my friend.

chapel Audio pronunciation

noun | CHAP-ul

Definition

:
a subordinate or private place of worship

:
a place of worship used by a Christian group other than an established church

:
a choir of singers belonging to a chapel

:
a chapel service or assembly at a school or college

Chapel is ultimately derived from the Late Latin word cappa, meaning "cloak." How did we get from a garment to a building? The answer to this question has to do with a shrine created to hold the sacred cloak of St. Martin of Tours. In Medieval Latin, this shrine was called cappella (from a diminutive of cappa, meaning "short cloak or cape") in reference to the relic it contained. Later, the meaning of cappella broadened to include any building that housed a sacred relic, and eventually to a place of worship. Anglo-French picked up the term as chapele, which in turn passed into English as chapel in the 13th century. In case you are wondering, the term a cappella, meaning "without instrumental accompaniment," entered English from Italian, where it literally means "in chapel style."

Most homeless have an issue with being homeless too. Been there done that..No t-shirt provided. Many have mental health issues. Perhaps we should just shoot them? #theyshoothorsesdontthey

No. It means we need to do a better job help. Government programs that exist need to have better oversite, and better management. There was a story here a few years ago, where the money that was supposed to go towards affordable housing and a County Run mental health initiative, instead got used for parties for the workers, lavish conferences, and other stuff like that.

Better management is the main thing, and then give people a hand up. I forget where, but one county/city started building tiny houses for homeless people to use as transitional housing. Programs like that, support for both mental health, addiction, and education to get job skills, help with job placement, etc.

That's what I would do. I know I've told you before, but it breaks my heart that I can't help.

Ok today was the best yet. No computer at all...just an empty space. Took an hour to log into another...and open outlook to find an email from my boss telling me that. Um maybe a phone call or.text? Such fun.
