Popular Post Marty Posted August 20, 2020 Popular Post Posted August 20, 2020 (edited) Storm Ellen breaks record for highest August wind speeds A wind moving at 111 kilometres per hour was recorded at Roche’s Point in Cork. STORM ELLEN BROUGHT Ireland’s highest 10-minute mean wind speed for August since 1973 as it moved across the country last night. The storm broke the August record for Ireland since records started in 1942, Met Éireann has said. A 10-minute mean wind of 111 kilometres per hour was recorded at Roche’s Point in Cork at around 10.30pm yesterday evening. Previously, the highest 10-minute mean wind speed recorded during the month of August was at Malin Head in Donegal on 9 August 1973. Met Éireann said that “as our climate continues to change we expect more weather records to be broken”. Source: www.thejournal.ie Edited August 20, 2020 by Marty 2 4

That's something that chocked me when I was an au pair in London. They had a cleaning lady coming twice a week who did the oven every week but no ironing. They pretty much didn'tironed. The dad would quickly iron a shirt every mornings but even the mom who was a PA for a wine selling company in London didn't ironed her clothes. They weren't crumple but it was clear it hadn't been properly ironed. And the girls... pretty much all their clothes had stains. Not like gross stains but like juice from eating and as it wasn't brush before the wash it stayed stained. And they'd dress like they'd want, sometimes looking more like clowns My grandma would have had a stroke! I'm lazy and hate doing it so I do everything I can so I don't have to iron mine but I wouldn't go out in crumple clothes. Edited August 20, 2020 by clochette 2 5

Going to heat back up tomorrow. Enjoy your gardening. Thanks to you both. I was able to accomplish the weeding and cleanup in my lower flower garden and spread two bags of mulch around my daylilies. They typically die back some this time of year due to the heat and expose the soil under them. To prevent the hot summer sun from drying the bed I spread a layer of fresh mulch. I also planted a new variety of perennial mum I found at one of my local garden centers. Supposed to be hardier than standard garden mums. Got the hrass cut too. Unfortunately the sun is hotter and brighter than I realized and now I have a migraine. The plus is that it's very pleasant under the tree so Thistle and I are relaxing hoping the headache eases. 6

Typically it will be a shirt placket that has decided not to lay flat though I've occasionally forgotten to hang one of my linen shirts promptly and need to press it. I remember Mum ironing on Mondays while watching Monday Night Football. I can remember her "dampening" some things like cotton shirts and handkerchiefs by sprinkling them with water then wrapping them in a plastic bag that she put into the refrigerator until she was ready to iron. Apparently that was how you steam ironed before there were modern steam irons. Mum doesn't iron any more. 6

This is what I normally use: The one I have is around 20 years old, bought at a mountaineering shop in Snowdonia, North Wales around the start of the millenium. It's made by Vango, and is gore-tex lined, which means it is breathable, so I don't get drowned in my own perspiration when wearing it for hours on end. Been all over the world with me. I also have a pair of gore-tex lined mountaineering boots, bought from the same shop, that have also been all over the world. I paid £60 at the end of last year to have them professionally re-soled. I guess it's a cultural thing then 🤷🏻♀️ Grandma would ironed sheets, underwear and even socks! my 55 years old uncle who has always been single and for which my grandma always did his laundry had to learn to iron when she passed away as he can't sleep in not ironed sheets Edited August 20, 2020 by clochette 2 5
