Here in Central Massachusetts, the rule of thumb is planting the garden Memorial Day weekend. I will have started my seeds much earlier in a coldframe outside, or window boxes inside the house. I plant butternut, spagetti and acorn squash. pickling cucumbers, no dill please and thanks, and San Marzano tomatoes, which I will can and eventually turn into spaghetti sauce. I have eight very mature high-bush blueberry bushes, which give me more than I can reasonably use. I can what I want, the rest I invite friends and neighbors. My rhubarb is turned into sauce and canned as well. I've been known to toss dried cranberries along with strawberries into my rhubarb for jelly and sauce as well. I'm gonna buy a bushel of peaches this summer and see what I can make of them as well! Love the longer days, outside chores aplenty! If the weather cooperates, in another 2 weeks, next year's firewood will be done!!

This was a fantastic chapter, with so much going on, I was on my tablet out in the living room and needed to boot up the PC to give the response this story needs... Graduating high school in the early 70's, done with college, and a nascent budding career taking off in the 80's, the world was such a different place. It wasn't friendly or welcoming for those of us living in the shadows, then compounded by the scourge of AIDS, a disease that originally began in an overseas heterosexual community. It found its way here through the carelessness of a bisexual person, and just took off like wildfire. Religious and political leaders could not wait to condemn, demean, and fail in their duty to understand this plague and look for a cure. It was, thankfully, a few well-known personages who started the process of a better understanding of the disease, and the beginning of acceptance of those living in the shadows. The following quote from this chapter truly resonated with me, and while the job isn't by any means finished, thankfully, the shadows no longer exist. So...off my soapbox....Thank you for this, from the bottom of my heart... I looked around the table. There was no response, but I pressed on. "But the book isn't about the tragedy," I said firmly. "It's about the response. It’s about how gay men stepped out of the shadows to care for one another when no one else would, when everything was against them. Then later—the way they fought for the right to have their loves recognized." "What I wanted to show was how underlying it all," I said quietly, "was just love. Not heroism. Not a political statement. Just the terrifying, mundane, radical act of loving someone and being loved when the world tells you it’s less, but you know it’s more."

I have to believe that The Heart Of The Fen will have something to say to Louis and his folly, misplaced pride, ambition, will be for naught as the Fen will have something more to say. That the day to come will test the resolve of all, and forces beyond comprehension will have Louis questioning the cost of his folly. His tired, broken army will be no match for what they will face as they leave Wynthorpe…. No one who survives the day to come, will forever be changed.

If I remember correctly, their time in Egypt won’t end well..

Oh my…Mistress Carolyn must be in a dither and I suspect Alice has/will come to understand the words exchanged were coming from a different place. Blaise needs to get more than what he deserves, I was stunned that Val was also molested… Can’t imagine what’s next…

This is going to be one hell of an adventure…and ya just gotta love this mangy cast of ill begotten, flea bitten, cast of characters….
