I don't think viruses can do 'magic' like this. They are responsible for some mutations, as are many other mutagens. If viruses attach to other cells as they usually do, do other things as they normally do, they are mutated as well. Mutations are only one factor of evolution. They provide the material, the other factors can work with. It's a very long process to change a population, or even an individual significantly.
People are afraid of viruses because of the terrible illnesses they can cause, Ebola virus, HI virus, Corona virus, etc. They also can be responsible for the development of certain forms of cancer, emphasis of 'can'. They are fascinating yes, but to make them the magic evolutionary factor is not correct IMO.
They sure do good as the bad guys in some fiction though.
