I sketched out the following moody Tanka several days ago. It sat on my desk, overwhelmed with thoughts of how to change it: alternate lines; different wordings; scrapping the whole damn thing. So this morning, I not only typed it -- keeping most of the poem as first scrawled -- but, as I completed it, suddenly felt an urge to translate it into Japanese. An interesting impulse, for the translation "finds the balance" missing in the original, and winds up beautifully optimistic. So, here they are, original and Japanese version. -------------------------------------------- Tanka: Proud moon from behind The now too-cloying cloud rolls, Once you gave me hope That I’d find a place to shine, When young, many moons ago. 短歌: そら そら を、 月の風見るば、 うれしい で 明日言葉は 輝く出るば。 Tanka: Sora sora wo, Tsuki no kaze miruba, Ureshii de Ashita kotoba wa Kagayaku dereba. https://translate.google.com/?sl=ja&tl=en&text=%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%82%92%E3%80%81%E6%9C%88%E3%81%AE%E9%A2%A8%E8%A6%8B%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%81%E3%81%86%E3%82%8C%E3%81%97%E3%81%84%20%E3%81%A7%20%E6%98%8E%E6%97%A5%E8%A8%80%E8%91%89%E3%81%AF%E8%BC%9D%E3%81%8F%E5%87%BA%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%82&op=translate

April 21, 2004 Escorial Palo Alto, CA Will I opened the door to find my father there with Jake behind him, as if he were Jake’s human shield. “Welcome home,” Dad said, and embraced me warmly. I thought it was nice that he’d taken off his tie and shed his jacket, as if to announce that he was no longer Mr. Corporate America. “I missed you,” I said warmly. Dad looked at Travis, then at Jake, then back at Travis, pretty much just like I had, then finally kicked h

St. Vincent's illness must be short-lived. I believe he replaces Spencer as First Lord in a couple of years. He had an extraordinarily long lifespan for this time, dying at 88.

Poor Ian. It’s hard to have so many expectations at just five years of age. He may have the smarts, but he doesn’t have the maturity yet, as witnessed b6 his meltdown about learning the technicalities of the language of music. I don’t quite get the determination to make Gaea like Earth II. Things had gone so wrong there, I would think they would want a completely fresh start. Name your cities and locations after places on Earth I. That’s fine. But make a break and make a new society with more care for each other and the world on which you are now living!

The nurses know about Liam and Ed. Pearl calls them "Jonathan and David". Aiden has had, a rather embarrassing, talk with Liam about sex. If they were breaking important rules then Janet, the Ward Manager, would put a stop to it and she hasn't. His relationship with Ed is so important to him and the nurses can see that. They have discussed it in their weekly Ward Round.

Liam had a great visit with. I'm worried that Ed and Liam have broken the rules by kissing.

-Spam emails
In 2004, Bill Gates was the most spammed person in the world with more than 4 million emails per day. Microsoft had to set up a whole department just to deal with this issue, and only forward a dozen of important emails to his direct inbox.

-Atlanta Airport
While most air traffic communications around the world use the NATO phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta, etc.), Atlanta doesn’t. Taxiways, Gates, and others including a ‘D’ are referred to as ‘Dixie’, so as not to cause confusion with Delta Air Lines. Atlanta is Delta’s hub.

The area that is now the Mediterranean Sea was once dry, but about 5 million years ago the Atlantic Ocean poured through the Strait of Gibraltar at a rate 1000 times that of the Amazon, filling the Mediterranean Sea in about 2 years.

This unofficial holiday is celebrated annually on May 6 and is also sometimes called National Beverage Day. While the origins of Beverage Day are unknown, we can all safely assume that the day encourages people to honor their beverages of choice and acknowledge that a humble beverage has the power to make or break many situations. A good beverage can energize you after a long, tiring day. It can also make a long, boring meal go fast, it can bring together two strangers, and it can make a party more fun. Whether your preferred beverage is a hot cup of tea, a delicious and healthy smoothie, or a tall glass of lemonade, Beverage Day is the perfect excuse to indulge yourself by drinking it all day long. Sit back, relax and celebrate the day with your favorite beverage. It could be anything from something as simple as water to a fancy cocktail. Try new beverages. What about tasting the national drink of a country you have never visited? Have a tasting party at home. Pick up a beverage you and your guests like and make or find different versions of it to taste and try. For example, you could do a beer or wine tasting party or a tea or coffee tasting party. Have each of your guests bring their favorite brand of beverage to share and serve foods that pair with the beverage of your choice. Who knows, you may just find your next favorite beverage at one of these parties! Did You Know… …that in common usage, water isn't usually considered to be a beverage? *** I was leading a tour through Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico when a woman asked, "How many miles of undiscovered passageways are there in this cave?" *** A customer called our rental store to ask about rectangular tables. I told him we had six-foot and eight-foot tables. His response: "What's the difference?" *** The night we took our three young sons to an upscale restaurant for the first time, my husband ordered a bottle of wine. The server brought it over, began the ritual uncorking, and poured a small amount for me to taste. My six-year-old piped up, "Mom usually drinks a lot more than that." *** A little boy was brought into our emergency room after ingesting part of a plug-in air freshener. The Meeting and A Huge Surprise
Lee Wilson commented on Lee Wilson's story chapter in The Meeting and A Huge Surprise
Of course. OK, so he's only 80% gay. Hmmm, I guess we'll see. Yep. Feel free to repeat this comment in chapter 2. -
I studied math under a guy who later got famous (or infamous) for having sex with students. I didn't even know it was an option. Never have I ever f-ed for a grade.

Liam and Ed are two damaged souls but their love for each other is a positive thing. Liam killed another boy because he made the wrong decision, but he had no one in his life to advise him and care for him. The saddest thing is that he has only found those important relationships because he killed another boy. He'd have never met Ed if they both hadn't been sent to this hospital. Mark, who has a very parental relationship with him, is his former solicitor from his murder trial. Aiden, who is caring for his mental health, is a paid professional whom Liam would never have met if he hadn't been sentenced to Nurton Cross. Liam is growing and maturing, but the irony of how he was able to... Well, is uncomfortable.

OMG all those Tim Tams and Coke consumed by Tyron and Bradley. Clearly neither has a problem with the scourge of many teens (and was certainly the scourge of my teenage years), acne. I know it is very un-Australian @Paladin I have never cared for Tim Tams. Now Mint Slice, they are a whole different kettle of fish. I rarely each such food now, but still enjoy chocolate with 95% dark chocolate my guilty pleasure. And as for that enormous breakfast eaten by Chris, Andre and Jamie, suffice to say I am vegetarian. A very light chapter, possibly before heavier chapters involving the trial of Ollie and Andre's rapist. I hope there is no confrontation between Ollie and his mother. If she dares to harass or blame him in person I hope she quickly finds herself persona non grata.

Ed and Liam are something beautiful. They care about one another, and appear to be pillars of strength for each other. At the same time, Liam has both Mark and Aiden confirming the truth that Liam has come to know. Growth and insight may follow swiftly.
