New Year's Tale

 

Cassie walked from window to window across the front of the den, cracking the blinds to look out at the snow falling steadily, trying not to worry.  "Do you think KC stopped at the Purple Pig, knowing that our guests are due to arrive by 9 o'clock tonight.  He better get the champagne here on time.  Then, he can go back to the bar.  We can't trust him to do anything."

 

"Calm down.  We've still got a few minutes.  After all, it's snowing to beat the band out there.  He's probably just being careful." Jo Ann added the last touches to the trays of appetizers she had scattered around the den and dining room and walked over to the bar.  She fixed the two of them a rum and coke, crossing the den to give Cassie's her drink.  Accepting the light kiss from Cassie, she was relieved to hear the sound of tires crunching in the driveway.

 

"There he is.  I'll go help him with the champagne before some of the guests arrive."

 

"Don't break the heels on your shoes plodding around in that snow.  You should've changed if you'd planned on going out in this weather."  Jo Ann stood on the porch, watching Cassie step carefully across the snow covered lawn.

 

"What the hell did you do to the bumper of my jeep?  It's hanging by one bolt, KC!  I knew something had happened.  Not a day goes by that you don't screw something up!"  Cassie was shouting, uncaring if the neighbors heard of not.  She grabbed the case of champagne out of KC's arms and said, "Gimme that before you break it."  Noticing KC"s shirt, she asked, "What's all over your dress shirt?  You look like you've been wallowing in your redneck friend's pigpen."

 

KC reached into the backseat of the jeep to get the other case of champagne, thankful to see lights turn in behind the jeep.  "Look over behind the backseat, and you'll see what happened to the jeep, and my shirt.  I hit a damn pot hole, it jerked the steering wheel from my hands, and all I saw was that poor deer in my headlights.  I swerved to miss it, but I hit him anyway."

 

Cassie walked to the back of the jeep and would've cursed more if Wayne and Zombie hadn't got out of Wayne's truck right then.  "HI guys.  Look what KC killed, and it wasn't with a gun.  The idiot used my jeep!"

 

"Just calm down Cassie.  From what I can tell, it just knocked your bumper loose.  You jeep looks fine."  Always the peacemaker, Wayne walked around the jeep, all the while trying to sooth Cassie's temper.

 

"Love the gazebo.  Who's idea was it to put rainbow colored lights on it?"  Zombie stood looking at the gazebo, ignoring Cassie's anger, also trying to calm the young woman.

 

"Jo Ann and I decided to do it.  Since we had clear lights around the house, we thought the rainbow lights would look great on the gazebo."  Cassie handed the case of champagne to Wayne who was holding his arms out for it, waiting for Cassie to go into the house ahead of him and Zombie.

 

As they walked through the door, Jo Ann took Zombie's coat and told Wayne to sit the champagne in the kitchen.  When Wayne came out of the kitchen, he shrugged out of his coat and handed it to Jo Ann.

 

KC came into the den and went to stand in front of the fireplace, ignoring the scowl Cassie was sending his way.  He had changed into a silky red shirt since his while shirt was dirty from his escapade with the deer.  "Sly said she had the fireworks.  I saw her at the liquor store."

 

"I hope she wasn't drinking yet."  Zombie grimaced.  "The last time she drank while it was snowing, I had to go get her out of jail.  When I got to the jail, she and the deputy were shooting tequila and playing poker in her cell.  The sheriff was ready to put both of them UNDER the jail when he walked back with me to get Sly.  I grabbed her hand and all but ran with her to my car, hoping the sheriff didn't decide to go ahead and keep both of them.  It was a mess.  It would've been funny if she hadn't been driving my truck when she'd gotten pulled over.  It cost me five big ones to get my truck."

 

Jo Ann cleared her throat to keep from laughing.  "Hopefully, our little blue one learned a lesson.  She told me she'd bought a furry blue onesie with footies to wear tonight.  I certainly hope they don't pull her over.  They'll think she's a lunatic."

 

The group chucked  and the laughter got even louder when the subject of their discussion literally fell through the front door, tripping over the fireworks she had in her arms. 

 

"Dammit, I told that idiot these bottle rockets were too big.  If I'd fallen outside and got my onesie dirty, I would've been pissed!"  She stood the fireworks up in the corner beside the fireplace and Zombie hurried over to move them, seeing a disaster in the making. 

 

"Let's move these to the other side of the room."  Zombie then walked back and hugged his fuzzy blue friend, noting the blue eye shadow on her eyes matched the baby blue of her furry onesie.  "What do you want to drink, Sly?"

 

"Frozen margarita with a shot of tequila on the side."  Sly settled on the couch between Cassie and Jo Ann, completely at ease with the group.  "So, who else is coming tonight.  The weather is terrible."

 

"Cole and his partner are coming, and Myiege and Aditus should be here any moment."  Jo Ann answered Sly as she handed Sly the shot, watching her shoot it before taking a sip of the frozen margarita. Ssuppressing a smile, Jo Ann took the empty shot glass and set it on the table.

 

Cassie got up to freshen her drink, taking Jo Ann's as she went by her.  "I'll turn some music on so we can get this party started."

 

Sly jumped to her feet, snapping her fingers at Zombie, wiggling her index finger to beckon him.  "Come on buddy, we gonna burn this floor up tonight."

 

The others laughed as Zombie's face turned red, but he docilely walked over and took his friend's hand,  ready to dance with her.  As soon as the music started, Sly got lost in a world of her own, arms flailing, hips shimmying, bumping against Zombie's crotch, must to his embarrassment. Eevery time Zombie would try to move away, she'd pull him closer. 

 

A few minutes later, Cole came through the door, holding it open for Myiege, Aditus and Cole's partner, Ron.  They all shook snow from their coats before handing them to Jo Ann.  Jo Ann then motioned them toward the bar and told them to help themselves.

 

Over an hour later, KC turned off the music and said, "Let's go shoot fireworks.  It's almost midnight."

 

Wayne and KC grabbed the fireworks and the rest of the group followed them drunkenly out the door.  The men started unwrapping fireworks, but stopped when they saw KC fixing to light the biggest bottle rocket in the package.  Leaving their own fireworks, they ran back to stand with the women as KC lit the long red fuse.

 

KC stood back a little, but waited to make sure the fuse didn't fizzle out.  Before he knew what happened, the rocket launched, knocking him on his butt, and making a loud boom that made his ears ring.

 

The group watching didn't even see KC fall because when the rocket exploded, the deer jumped through the back window of the jeep, headed toward KC who was trying to get up from the ground. Obviously, the jeep's bumper had just stunned the animal.  Putting its' head to the ground, the buck preceded to rut KC's butt with his antlers, pushing KC headfirst back into the snow.  Hearing the other's laughter, the buck started running toward them.  Jo Ann, Cassie, and Myiege ran for the gazebo, pulling the lattice gate shut behind them.  Wayne, Aditus, and Zombie scrambled up the ladder that KC had left leaning against the house after putting up the Christmas lights.  Cole and his partner ran for the big oak, scrambling up the tree like two young boys, getting out of the deer's reach just in time.  Zombie glanced down and saw the little blue one frozen in fear, staring at the scene before her.  Scrambling down the ladder, he grabbed her and pushed her by her butt up the ladder, Wayne and Aditus grabbing her hands and pulling her to safety as Zombie scrambled up behind her.

 

KC could hear the laughter of the others as he waved his red shirt like a matador, trying to get rid of the deer.  The deer circled him again, scooped KC up with his antlers catching KC's butt with one of the points.  KC screamed like a girl, causing the deer to drop him and disappear into the darkness, never to be seen again.

 

The others came out of their safe havens, trying not to laugh at their bruised and battered friend.  Their laughter was interrupted by the toll of the bells from one of the churches in town, announcing the New Year.

 

"Alright everybody, let's go inside and toast  the New Year."  Jo Ann herded the group in the front door.

The group stood in a semi circle around the fireplace, looking expectantly at Wayne.  Raising his glass, he said.  "Don't forget the past.  Learn from it.  Happy New Year."  The tinkling of the glasses sealed friendships and love among the group, the firelight seemed to brighten, infected with the genuine emotion felt within the circle it completed.

I had hoped to have a story for this prompt and in a timely manner but it has gotten away from me and become much more than a writing exercise. Something for which I believe these prompts are designed to do; to both spur the imagination and entice creativity. My hope is that when complete and edited properly, folks will find it worth the wait and relevant despite the delay.
