Forum Moves and Shake Ups

There have been changes to the forums. Some forums were moved or removed with their content moving to new places, some Clubs removed or consolidated, and Myr shared the Fluid View option in last week’s announcement.

So now that it’s been a week or so, how’s it working for you? Have you gotten used to the new locations? Never really noticed the change? Like it way better?

Stories Feedback Areas-Reviews and Comments

Stories Comment, Review, and Chapter Comment Guidelines

These guidelines are pretty intuitive to long-time members, but there’s now a pop up field at each section for comments and reviews on stories. They explain what each section is for and how to best support authors by readers. The idea is to have the information ‘on the spot’ for users to encourage them to use the features.

Do any of the guidelines not make sense to you? Thoughts about them? Comments in general? Share them below!

Example of Story Review Guidelines below in the Spoiler!

Spoiler

Reviews are intended to provide potential readers with some expectation of what they will be reading without spoiling the story. Please keep the following points in mind:

  • Feedback to authors through comments and reviews are often the only form of repayment an author gets for their hard work in writing.
  • While a "great story" is better than nothing, a "great story! I loved the characters and the emotion the story creates" would be better.  The more you can articulate the better it is for the author and fellow readers.  Just be careful to avoid spoilers.
  • Story Reviews require a 1 (worse) to 5 (best) star rating and commentary.  If you do not like using the star ratings, then use the "Story Comment" tab instead of "Story Review"
  • While there is no rule against leaving a 1 star review, if you do so, then you must leave constructive feedback.  Anything along the lines of "this sucks" will attract troll guards.  You do not want be a troll.
  • Rule of thumb on stars:
    • 5 Stars - Excellent. One of your favorites.
    • 4 Stars - Great story.
    • 3 Stars - Good story.
    • 2 Stars - Fair Story.
    • 1 Star - This story was not my cup of tea and I am petty and wish to attract negative attention by using a 1 star review.

We authors love your feedback, so don’t be shy!

I like the forum and club consolidation.  So far I haven't had any issues finding anything.

I found GA by following a link on Rob Colton's profile on another site.  So it seems that linking back to GA is an effective method of drawing people here.  I'm honestly not sure what to suggest that hasn't already been suggested.  Promoting GA on social media more makes sense to me.

Like countless others, I read and lurked here for a while before creating a profile and joining.  I'm a lurker on most sites I visit, but there was something about the friendly and supportive atmosphere on GA that drew me in and made me want to participate.  The prompts really spoke to me and inspired me to start writing again after a long hiatus.

@Valkyrie mentions social media. That's an important point, I think. GA has a Twitter account, but you post to it only a couple of times per week, and it never interacts with anybody. Twitter can be a really powerful platform (the Twitter writing community has given me both readers of my work and a couple of patrons) when used right, but much like GA you get out of it what you put into it. Interacting with queer writers and the queer community on Twitter might be a good way to attract both readers and writers to the site.
