JJFlame Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 (edited) I'm sorry if this isn't the correct forum for this, but I'm gonna throw this out there anyway. I'm just getting into the gay fiction scene and I was wondering, now that I've made my way through my first few great stories, if anyone had some suggestions based on what I like. My current favorite 'cliche' genre is the jock/nerd type of story, such as in Tutoring Jerry, Educating Alex and Reclaiming Austin. The super attractive and confident guy falls for the average boy - or at least average in his own mind. I guess I enjoyed the protectiveness of Austin and Alex and Jerry with their respective beau's. If there are any good stories of this type still out there I'd really appreciate being pointed in the right direction. I've been browsing on my own but haven't found much that mirrors the relationships in those stories. Thanks. Edited May 25, 2009 by JJFlame
Trebs Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Try the first book of Christopher Lydon's William Carter series, "Carter's Army" - I think it will fit the bill for what you're looking for.
DragonFire Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Try C James For The Love. Not sure if it's what you're looking for but it's a great story. http://cjames.gayauthors.org/ Or Tiff's Jumping Over My Mountain http://tiff.gayauthors.org/stories.php Or Duncan Ryder's Everybody's Wounded http://duncanryder.gayauthors.org/ I mean there are a LOT more excellent stories on here, so just have a browse.
Mark Arbour Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Another good read in that genre: Little Buddha - Somewhere Over The Blue
old bob Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 I advise you to make the same journey I made for my pleasure. Go to "Readers" and then to "hosted authors". I had the choice between dkstories and Dom Luka. Both are amazing, but I began with dkstories and I wasnt deceived. Begin with "Do Over" and read all the Do Saga one story after the other : "Do Over", "Do Over Redux", "Doing it right" and "Lets do it". You have a lot of reading hours before you .Enjoy and tell us what you think. I wish you good reading time
Rabble_Rouser Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 I'd also recommend some non-GA stories that fit the qualifications you're looking for (at crvboy.org): Jeff Allen's "Finding Family" Mike Arram's Peacher Series Sara Bell's two stories (especially The Way You Say My Name) In addition to Old Bob's recommendations for here, my current favs are CJames, dkstories, Allen Smithee, Dom Luka, Don Hanratty & Krista. I try someone new from the list of Hosted & Promising when I'm looking for a new quality story. I'd also check out eFiction as you can find some fantastic new authors who are just starting out. You can find reviews and ratings to help you decide what you want to try out first. Steve
rec Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 I recommend, too, that you look at the Best-of-Nifty.org list. Most of the stories above are listed there as well as many others.
JJFlame Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 (edited) Thanks you guys! Wow, that's was a fast response. I'm getting started on Carter's Army right now, It's a really nice story so far. Thanks for the suggestion Trebs. DragonFire, Mark Arbour and old bob, thanks for your suggestions as well, I'm going to go through them all once I get done with Carter's Army, thanks for the help! And if any more stories occur to you, I'm always looking for more. Edit: I see I've gotten a few more since I was posting this... lol Thanks Rabble_Rouser and rec. I'll bookmark that website, Rec, looks good. Edited May 25, 2009 by JJFlame
JJFlame Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 I just finished Carter's Army. Great story!! It was nice laying back in front of the AC all afternoon reading it. Thanks for the suggestion Trebs It occurred to me earlier that I have read a bit of gay fiction before that my friend linked me to a few years back. I'm trying to remember the name but it's just hovering out of reach. I wonder if you guys can help me, it's about a teenager (18 or so) who gets thrown out of his home, and he goes to Las Vegas. Outside of a hotel he gets clobbered by a door that was swinging open so the hotel lets him stay a bit for free and gets a doctor to look him over. While he's there he gambles away all of his money and a guy in the bar offers him money to sleep with him, and he hesitantly agrees since he was in such dire straits. He gets caught and ends up making a deal with the owner of the hotel to pretend to be his boyfriend while the owner's mother is in town. I wont give away any more, or the ending, just in case someone hasn't read it yet.
Site Administrator wildone Posted May 26, 2009 Site Administrator Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) I'm sure your reading list is full for the next couple of weeks , but I thought I'd throw out another one to you. From Behind Those Eyes by Viv has to be one of my favourite stories of a Jock and geek (well maybe not geek, but the school's gay guy) in highschool. Enjoy! Steve Edited May 26, 2009 by wildone

JJFlame Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 wildone - Thanks for the suggestion, bookmarked it. Benji cool, thanks. It was a great story, wasn't it? Who doesn't want their own 6'3" casino mogul
BeaStKid Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Steve! I was about to recommend that story! FBTE is awesome!! Then there's this another one Matthew Figures it Out by Ehman Penn... Enjoy!
glomph Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 One of my favorites is "Billy and Danny," found in the Gay/College section of Nifty. It doesn't exactly fit the genre you were asking for, but they do have major contrasts of that come into play. And the story is good enough that I'll recommend it anyway. I mention it in part because it somehow didn't make the "Best of Nifty" list. You have enough suggestions to keep you busy for a while, I see.
Krista Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 My Stories I will take this time to promote myself.. Most of these stories are down to earth Romances. Doesn't hurt to broaden ones horizons.
JJFlame Posted May 28, 2009 Author Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) Just read a bit of Somewhere Over the Blue. Nice story. BasStKid, Glomph & Krista, thanks for the recommendations. Edited May 28, 2009 by JJFlame

JJFlame Posted June 1, 2009 Author Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) Currently reading Vlista - Chase. Vlista sure knows how to rip out your heart and stomp on it, then put it back and sew you up with a smile. Does it mean I can do that too? So, the link's in the signature... P.S That is new story, but I am sure one can find the others after reading that... K, I'll check your stuff out. Edited June 1, 2009 by JJFlame
