Scribe1971 Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Hello Everyone, I just registered with this site. Nick sent me an email regarding my story "Substitute Dad" and invited me to pop in here for a visit so here I am! Some of you may be reading my story (It's on Nifty and it's gradally being posted on the Rainbow Community Writing Project site - www.rainbowcommunitywritingproject.com and it's also available on www.storylover.us.) I'd appreciate hearing from any of you who are reading it. It is my first story attempt and it has taken on a life of it's own. Nifty has posted it in the Adult/Youth section, however, I can assure you that it does not contain any sexual content involving minors. It's the ongoing story of an incredibly tight and loving bond which forms between a young fatherless boy and a young bisexual man. Both characters have had a hard life and Tommy (the older character) has had more than his fair share of hard knocks. Tommy and Josh (the younger character) originally met at summer camp (Tommy was his counselor). Tommy was the first person who really paid much attention to Josh and cared about what he thought an how he felt. This leads Josh to open up to him and to bond with him. Sadly, they lose track of each other after that summer but they are reunited 18 months later when Tommy rents a basement apartment from Josh's mother. Josh (who has an absent, abusive and alcoholic father) begins to really bond with Tommy after he moves in. When tragedy strikes, the two are driven together once and for all and it is the start of an amazing and heartwarming relationship which takes them through a series of major challenges and adventures. Together they deal with a number of very serious issues all the while melding closer and closer together as "Dad and son". As I said, this is not an adult-youth sex story, this is a relationship story which shows a positive loving and mentoring relationship between the two main characters. The story starts with the premise that there is a difference between a father and a dad and then sets out to prove it. The only sexual content which might appear in the story (it will be very tasteful and NOT pornographic in any way) will involve adult characters only. I hope you the story! Cheers, Scribe1971

Lideon Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 Yikes, I'm new to this forum and my main joy is just to write. I spent the first day and a half walking around the site and just exploring and see what I can and cannot do. One post intrigues me though, the copyright thread, I always thought you had to buy a copyright in order to make it your own. I am still new to the whole professional writting rituals. All want to do is write, but if it involves so much process I think I'm gonna burn my fuel just on writing disclaimers and copyrights along. Any Help to how you can format it? Oh! A question about grammar, I've been told that you have to start a new paragraph when someone talks as in "Jeans are cool"
Matthew Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 (edited) You possess a copyright on any original material that you create. What you're talking about, the registration with the Patent Office and such, is a method of formalizing what exactly you created and is largely a method of later proving that you were first. As for copyright notices, they don't have to be elaborate. I was going to say that you should just change someone elses before I realized the irony of stealing a copyright notice. Some are elaborate, some are simple. Just include if it's ok to post other places or only with your permission, etc. It is traditional that if two people are talking, you keep different voices in different paragraphs. I really think this helps with breaking up the story. Edited July 8, 2006 by Matthew
clumber Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Welcome Lideon. Hope you like it here. Yes, you do normally put the different voices on different lines so it would be: "Jeans are cool" "I know, aren't they" "Yes they are"
Adrien-Luc Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Ah....hi. ~looks a little sheepish~ I just joined a short bit ago in an attempt to give this "social networking" thing a try; I'm quite horrible at it, but I figured I might as well get out and try to meet other gay authors. And...now that I'm here, I've no idea what to say. I'm working on a novel, looking for an agent, and sometimes hopelessly stuck, but I suppose that could describe just about everyone here at one time or another. Erm...I'll think of something else later when I'm not fighting the urge to find a corner to hide in. Mostly, I guess, I just wanted to say "hi".

I think you will love the forums here, especially if you are an Author! You might want to have a peek in the "writer's corner" forum, as there is a lot of very helpful info in the posts there. It's aimed more at online writers, but there would be a lot of interest there for a novelist, IMHO. Don't be shy! We have a great bunch of people here! Welcome to GA! Adrien-Luc Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Several have not had rabies shots for years. Just watch out for the ones who drool. ...drool? You've met my boyfriend, haven't you?
C James Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Thanks a lot for the welcome. I'll try to edge out of my corner to join in the discussions. You guys don't bite, right? The discussions are fun. I originally started coming to GA for the stories, but now the forums are my favorite part. I've even been known to post in them occasionally myself... As for who does, and who does not bite, well, don't worry about it too much, the ones who bite usually don't bite too hard or too often.
