BigBen Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 It's worth mentioning that UNESCO once rated English the second most difficult language to learn as a second tongue. (The most difficult is, of course, Chinese.) 4
Popular Post Zombie Posted May 2, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted May 2, 2023 In the UK many people live in homes with a ground floor + a first floor …that’s a two storey building Or possibly a three storey home with a ground floor + first & second floor Or maybe a penthouse flat on the ninth floor …that’s a ten storey building Those easily confused live in a bungalow …that’s just a ground floor 7

I did Taking phonetics seriously screwed up my spelling. I was an excellent speller before that class, and afterwards I found myself having to think about how to spell things properly. I wouldn't trade my job for anything, though. 5
Popular Post Thirdly Posted May 3, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 3, 2023 Yeah I learned American English for survival…to know exactly when we escaped our prison cells (classrooms). 3 4

Anyway, I blame Henry Ford for putting the steering wheel on the left and driving on the right when the British are all right handed and drive on the left, but that's another story, as in tale, not storey as in those buildings whose first floor is the second.... 1 5

Certainly the Angles, Brits, Picts, Celts, etc had a word for a one story dwelling long before the British East India Company 😲 1
