    Trail Legs

And the fully self contained man finds a breach in the armor… He thought about the barista’s correction. He thought about how it had felt. The feeling wasn’t humiliation, or even embarrassment. It had felt like being adjusted. Someone had reached over and straightened a picture frame without asking, an intrusion that improved something and asked for no gratitude and no apology

  13. I have managed to read all the submissions for the Secret Author stories, and all I can say is WOW. What a fantastic collection of diverse stories, every one of them giving me pause for thought. There are some very talented folks out there, and we are lucky here to share in their works. Here in Central Massachusetts, the center of the Universe, the weather has been very fickle, with some absolutely gorgeous days, interspersed with stinky, humid weather in the low to high nineties. It has been a very dry summer, and starting this week we are about to be inundated with rain, in some local locales, a possible 3 to 6 inches by week's end...go figure...an entire summer's worth of rain over the next ten days. Our local farmers have cut the second haying, and are now racing to get it in. Like all of you, I miss Geron Kees tremendously, as I was really starting to put out some stories; his advice to me was invaluable. That at times, less is more, that sometimes a hint or a suggestion works better than the very gratuitous. He was always commenting and offering help and praise; our writing world is diminished without him, and as I mentioned in the Myr's blog regarding Geron, I hope someday to see him once again on Engris.

    Chapter 6

And the attraction becomes real. The following intrigues me. Arminius had peeled away at the base of the hill, murmuring something about business with one of Varus’s household stewards that would keep him occupied until they returned, and

    Geron Kees

Can't disagree, but the Road series, along with the Short, Short Prince, stands out as well. That was an amazing flight of imagination and storytelling.

I can't pick a favorite; it is like trying to pick a favorite child...oh...wait...I don't have children... how about beer, or a car, or a restaurant, or favorite food, or a gay story site?

    We Danced

The vengeful side of me wanted to see Zane pay for the branding he gave his son, having time to reflect on that and the old saw, revenge is a dish best served cold. Never has that statement ever been truer with how Taggert thought things through, while we were all reading and wondering, he was playing three-D chess, and ensured a satisfactory outcome for all of those who needed one. And in the end, payback truly is a bitch as Zane finds out, his son thoroughly emasculated him, but did it in the most public spaces, in the world these folks occupy. Like others, one hopes, like The Camp Refuge stories, that we peek in on these folks again. Zane locked out of the homestead, having to depend on the charity of others, in a sense to operate what he controls. The silent knife found its way at least twice in the method Taggert devised. The following was brilliant, a coup de grace if there ever was one..."You may want to watch it sooner rather than later." Thank you for this, it stands among the best of your works. Taggert looked directly at Zane. “Sold to Nasser Ranch.” The silence afterward felt enormous. Gaping mouths. Wide eyes. Utter disbelief. Then Taggert started walking down the aisle. Toward his father, Tony, and Randy. Toward the entire life he’d once fled. The only sounds were from local news crews shifting around to film him as Taggert walked toward his father. Ash’s heart hammered so hard it hurt. But Taggert never slowed. He stopped directly in front of Zane’s chair and held out the USB drive. ZANE. Zane stared at it without moving. Taggert’s voice remained calm. “Granddad wanted you to have this.” For the first time, Zane looked genuinely shaken. Not angry or dominant. Shaken. Like he'd seen a ghost. Taggert smiled slightly and slipped the USB into the breast pocket of Zane's jacket. Cold around the edges now. “You’ll want to watch it sooner rather than later.”
