Apart from poor grammar and stilted dialogue (the latter worse for me, since I can forgive errors to a point), I agree with @MacGreg. Longwinded and overly detailed descriptions make me snooze and leave.

Well, you have me hooked for this. I feel really bad for Jake. Seems I had invested in him getting over his addiction. But you are right. Things happen totally unforeseen and then the rest of us live with aftershocks and consequences. As a lawyer, I have pondered the concept of justice once or twice. Not convinced it can be gotten in court, but it's perhaps the closest we can get to it.

So weird really when you think about all the chance happenings that make up life. I don't believe one choice can derail your life completely, since there are usually second chances. But still it is intriguing to think about how things would have been had I chosen differently at various points in my life. -

If something is too good to be true, it usually is. Creepy to think of farming with no contact with the animals. I'm glad at least a few of the poor hens got to live a more cared for life.

Eddie might deserve to be taught a lesson, but I sort of fell sorry for him. And it's very much fun to read the other takes on this. It was a mistake since I didn't read the prompt properly. I find it difficult to be black and white. Life gets in the way and turns messy. So Eddie is at least a bit human. My stories tend to do that to me. They fill out and balloon. I struggled hard to keep below the limit of 1500 words. According to my count, I am. But not on GA... We can be a little sorry for Eddie. Maybe it's a wakeup call? Getting his life together and stop being a asshat? He snuck it on me, though. Cheeky sod.
