I sketched out the following moody Tanka several days ago. It sat on my desk, overwhelmed with thoughts of how to change it: alternate lines; different wordings; scrapping the whole damn thing. So this morning, I not only typed it -- keeping most of the poem as first scrawled -- but, as I completed it, suddenly felt an urge to translate it into Japanese. An interesting impulse, for the translation "finds the balance" missing in the original, and winds up beautifully optimistic. So, here they are, original and Japanese version. -------------------------------------------- Tanka: Proud moon from behind The now too-cloying cloud rolls, Once you gave me hope That I’d find a place to shine, When young, many moons ago. 短歌: そら そら を、 月の風見るば、 うれしい で 明日言葉は 輝く出るば。 Tanka: Sora sora wo, Tsuki no kaze miruba, Ureshii de Ashita kotoba wa Kagayaku dereba. https://translate.google.com/?sl=ja&tl=en&text=%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%82%92%E3%80%81%E6%9C%88%E3%81%AE%E9%A2%A8%E8%A6%8B%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%81%E3%81%86%E3%82%8C%E3%81%97%E3%81%84%20%E3%81%A7%20%E6%98%8E%E6%97%A5%E8%A8%80%E8%91%89%E3%81%AF%E8%BC%9D%E3%81%8F%E5%87%BA%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%82&op=translate

The actual name is the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, just off of I-84 five miles east of Pendleton, Oregon. I renamed it and moved it about 170 miles for story purposes. The exhibits and their emotional impact were as told in the story. https://www.tamastslikt.org/

Did you know
Yakhchāls
By 400 BC, Persian engineers had mastered the technique of using yakhchāls to create ice in the winter and store it in the summer in the desert.

-Jed Blair
After a police officer named Jed Blair reported his fellow cops for planting evidence, his colleagues “allegedly stole his equipment, interfered with his radio calls, threatened to kill him and his family, and scrawled the word ‘rat’ on his locker.”

-Spam emails
In 2004, Bill Gates was the most spammed person in the world with more than 4 million emails per day. Microsoft had to set up a whole department just to deal with this issue, and only forward a dozen of important emails to his direct inbox.

-Atlanta Airport
While most air traffic communications around the world use the NATO phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta, etc.), Atlanta doesn’t. Taxiways, Gates, and others including a ‘D’ are referred to as ‘Dixie’, so as not to cause confusion with Delta Air Lines. Atlanta is Delta’s hub.

The area that is now the Mediterranean Sea was once dry, but about 5 million years ago the Atlantic Ocean poured through the Strait of Gibraltar at a rate 1000 times that of the Amazon, filling the Mediterranean Sea in about 2 years.

Poor Ian. It’s hard to have so many expectations at just five years of age. He may have the smarts, but he doesn’t have the maturity yet, as witnessed b6 his meltdown about learning the technicalities of the language of music. I don’t quite get the determination to make Gaea like Earth II. Things had gone so wrong there, I would think they would want a completely fresh start. Name your cities and locations after places on Earth I. That’s fine. But make a break and make a new society with more care for each other and the world on which you are now living!

mustang - Word of the Day - Wed Apr 10, 2024
CarlHoliday commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
The original Mustang Ranch Brothel was the first licensed brothel in Nevada when it opened in 1971. This led to the opening of brothels in 10 of the 17 counties in the state. Mustang Ranch was surrendered to the federal government in 1999 when the owner was convicted for tax fraud, racketeering, and other crimes. The ranch was auctioned off by the government on eBay for $145,100 and opened five miles east at Exit 28 on Interstate 80 where it continues to operate. -

Chapter 16 — Awakening
Thomas Wells commented on Biff Spork's story chapter in Chapter 16 — Awakening
Biff, Thanks for letting me know about this other story. It was excellent too. I am 80 and can't get around very easily, but I worry about the Climate problems that are affecting our planet. I pray that someone will take the right action needed to fix the problem before it is too late. Thanks again for the great story. tjw -
<>><<> Is there truth amid the pain like motorcycles in the rain wet through to our skin again and again, we seek to win What is truth, and what is life we cannot outrun the strife tears fall from heartbroken eyes we tell and tell and tell the lies There is nowhere we can run we live and die by the gun our tattooed skin we can’t shed where are the drugs to stop the spread Words are the only sword I own and I don’t stand here alone bl

This unofficial holiday is celebrated annually on May 6 and is also sometimes called National Beverage Day. While the origins of Beverage Day are unknown, we can all safely assume that the day encourages people to honor their beverages of choice and acknowledge that a humble beverage has the power to make or break many situations. A good beverage can energize you after a long, tiring day. It can also make a long, boring meal go fast, it can bring together two strangers, and it can make a party more fun. Whether your preferred beverage is a hot cup of tea, a delicious and healthy smoothie, or a tall glass of lemonade, Beverage Day is the perfect excuse to indulge yourself by drinking it all day long. Sit back, relax and celebrate the day with your favorite beverage. It could be anything from something as simple as water to a fancy cocktail. Try new beverages. What about tasting the national drink of a country you have never visited? Have a tasting party at home. Pick up a beverage you and your guests like and make or find different versions of it to taste and try. For example, you could do a beer or wine tasting party or a tea or coffee tasting party. Have each of your guests bring their favorite brand of beverage to share and serve foods that pair with the beverage of your choice. Who knows, you may just find your next favorite beverage at one of these parties! Did You Know… …that in common usage, water isn't usually considered to be a beverage? *** I was leading a tour through Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico when a woman asked, "How many miles of undiscovered passageways are there in this cave?" *** A customer called our rental store to ask about rectangular tables. I told him we had six-foot and eight-foot tables. His response: "What's the difference?" *** The night we took our three young sons to an upscale restaurant for the first time, my husband ordered a bottle of wine. The server brought it over, began the ritual uncorking, and poured a small amount for me to taste. My six-year-old piped up, "Mom usually drinks a lot more than that." *** A little boy was brought into our emergency room after ingesting part of a plug-in air freshener. After consulting Poison Control and monitoring him, the doctor wrote on his discharge, "Patient doing well. Ready to go home. Smells good." *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ( What's the difference between graffiti and historical signatures?) Wow, Andre's story brought back many memories for me. I am 80 now. But, at about 11, I had a similar experience. I am glad that the story had a positive ending for Andre. TW

midriff - Word of the Day - Mon Dec 4, 2023
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
I think I was at that show! When I think of midriffs, I am reminded of the half-shirts we used to wear back in the 70s-80s for sports. Noah Hathaway or Boxy from the original Battlestar Galactica(78) or Atreyu from Neverending Story(84) rocking a half-shirt and showing off his midriff. I never missed an episode!
