Charlie Hughes encounters an old friend who has four children, but there's something going on with this family. After taking the oldest boy shopping and buying him an expensive watch Charlie is called in the middle of the night because the boy is being kicked out. When Charlie goes to the family home he discovers the boy and been beaten, whipped, raped, and one of his arms is broken. Charlie takes the boy into his home and all hell is loosed on his life.

Jack works at a law firm, and his husband Arty stays at home. After a recent death in the family, the two decide it's time to adopt another child. Daniel Scott, from the great, hilly capital of Edinburgh. They just didn't anticipate him to be so perfect. Or so deceiving. Do you ever know who you're really letting into your home?

Envy breathes perfection. He spends every second in a quest for this single, unattainable goal. But perfection never lasts for a mortal. Time swallows all and turns beauty to dust. "The child lay in his bed, curled up into a fetal position as he stared at the door across from him. It wasn't a door. It was a giant flab of flesh, glowing like when you put a flashlight under your hand, and breathing like a lung. It breathed slowly, filling with air and then flattening out. Then it breathed again. The boy was too scared to close his eyes, so he stared at the door that never left his room. It had been there for months. Haunting the child. Traumatizing him."

When a father's son goes missing, he has to venture into a world of nonsense and horror to bring him back.

I can’t say how long I’ve wanted this, his lips on mine, his tongue in my mouth. And even as I’m thinking it, I can’t be sure if this is something I actually want or something he’s making me want. I try not to care, try to just ignore it, because he’s beautiful. He’s beautiful and terrible in the way of a massive thunderstorm, or a tidal wave, or another destructive force of nature. If I want him because he wants me to want him, I think I can live with that.
