Timmy's Journal - 14. Home and Cold: Two Poems

Cold and Home Two new poems

Cold

It’s coming – the winter with its bone chilling cold
I can feel it now; hear it through unclosed windows
Still dressed in a sweater, I shiver
And like Sam McGee, wonder if I’ll ever be warm

All the trees have undressed to the wind's shame
Their leaves blow unfettered – collected in traps
White flurries start unfulfilled journeys
Not cold enough to keep them alive on the ground

Trudge we will through drifts deep and white
Months of unending cold. What keeps us going?
The promise of Spring’s warmth
Streams of melt; Galanthus, poking up through the snow

I wrote Cold, mostly because I am. Not a great lover of winter, if I'm honest.

Sam McGee I borrowed from Robert W. Service's most excellent poem, The Cremation of Sam McGee. If you haven't read it, do. I've loved it since I was a child. My mum read it to me often along with, The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. Both of which I remember by heart.

Galanthus is the Latin name for snow drops, the first flowers of spring - in my mum's garden anyway.

My wonderful husband came home yesterday - finally after two weeks away. He picked me up from work. As I walked out of the building I saw him standing, leaning on the Jeep. He walked toward me, all 6 feet, 5 inches of him and;

Home

You raised me up and kissed me
In front of everyone
What they thought mattered not
There was just us in that parking lot.

Love you all. Thanks for reading and supporting me.

Chapter Comments

Cold: Absolutely love the imagery here. Flurries on unfulfilled journeys. Galanthus (amongst the favorites in my own garden); trees undressed, and the wind ashamed. I can feel it and see it all. I smile at the images of the familiar, even as I shiver. And the snowdrops make me hope for spring again.
Home: My heart leaps at this, and not just because you told us the story behind it. Your line - "You raised me up and kissed me" made my heart ring with joy for you. May everyone be so blessed today.

Both of these are outstanding ...

Outstanding in the cold ... I do like winter but then I was born in early January and this evokes that season for me from its beginning to its end.

Outstanding in the parking lot waiting for the guy he loves ... wonder which of you had the broadest smile. Very few words required to paint an eloquent scene.
I shed tears of joy reading this.

Hey tim
Galanthus. Never heard that word before and I hadn't noticed your dedication yet, so I googled the word. Up popped a page of beautiful flowers. What a lovely sight for this dreary grey day.
I can just imagine the charge of emotions that escaped upon seeing Mike. I am sure they had building layer upon layer for days. Your "home" was back.
As always, nicely done and thanks for sharing your words.

Oh Tim these are wonderful poems :)

I love Cold because it reminds me of winter here (yes :o Texas does have cold winters... at least in the Northwest :P ) and Home, oh my god, I felt the love and so much more in those few words. The two of you were in your own world when y'all embraced.

Thank you Tim for sharing these amazing poems

Hi Drew and thank you, as always. Yeah it was like we were on our own out there ... and there was a smattering of applause after Mike put me down. It was cool. Glad you liked Cold, too.

All the senses come alive in Cold. Very sharp imagery. For me, it's the crocus that tells the coming of spring. That image made me smile.

Home was sublime. Four lines, simple maybe, but they told everything. Powerful.

Absolutely love them both Tim..

Hi Def, I'm glad these worked for you. Was sitting here this morning listening to the wind whistle through the old windows... then I wrote Cold.

And seeing Mike.. well the only thing missing was a field of grass and wildflowers..lol Glad it worked.

The second stanza of Cold has the most beautiful description of late fall/early winter. You can see it ...you can smell it ...you can feel it. Bravo!

Home is simple and emotional and deep and proud, as you should be.

Love them Tim!

SD!! Thank you my friend. Glad Cold worked.

Home.. oh see him there was..such a good feeling. Being back in his arms was like being home...

Okay Cold made me... cold. Of course I do still have snow on the ground here. Great imagery... you had me shivering ;)

Home I adored. Just picturing your big cop lifting you up, not a care for who sees. I could feel the love. :)

Hi LL! Aw sorry Cold made you cold! Snow...really? Geez sorry.

It was like that, when Mike met me..I could tell he'd missed me, it was sooo nice to be in his arms again.

Thank you for reading these, I appreciate it...

Cool poem as always. Also not a fan of the cold, but I can think of one good thing about being cold and that's letting someone warm you up.

Hi Wolf! No I hate being cold. But you're right of course, there's always that option to snuggle up with your sweetheart. Like the way you think!! Thanks for reading and for leaving your thoughts. I appreciate it.

I've just started to connect with your writing. And as I said before, well done, well done.
But I have brain farts, as I like to call them, and a rather stream of mindlessness writing style ( a weakness of mine I know - my fingers get faster than my brain) sometimes makes me merge some of the stuff I read and I can't tell fully the tales apart. The song would probably be much more appropriate for the Daniel story. But it was where the song hit me while I was writing after reading your latest. So, sorry for the transposition to your poem, where I agree, it's not a great fit.
But, for some strange reason, this one song just "sings" out to me. And I wanted to share it. It's so damn good about relationships. And that's what I'm all about. To hell with the sex, it's the contact and connection that matters. And, I hope others discover it, turn up the volume, sit back, and contemplate the message behind the song.
Keep up the good stuff, it's great. And I wish you all the happiness you deserve.

Hey alan, I get it. No problems. The lyrics were cool. There is more to life than sex. Having experienced lots of unconnected sex, I'll certainly agree a connection with your partner does make life that much sweeter. Thanks for continuing to read my words. I appreciate it.
