Timmy's Journal - 25. Beloved - Poetry Prompt 7 Blank Verse

For Poetry Prompt 7 - Blank Verse

Beloved

I hear his key as it turns the old lock

Grudgingly, ancient hinges yield open

My beloved grumbles hanging his coat

Pining for a soft touch that will not come

He settles now on the musty settee

The oak-aged sherry unsteadily poured

But sipped, and savoured on those gentle lips

His beating heart pounds loud into my soul

Aching, I reach out with comforting hands

He presses his tearful cheek to my urn.

Thanks to AC for reading this for me.
Thank you, as always to the brave souls that read my poetry.

Tim, I think this is a gem.
Maybe for some it is too sad. For me it expresses love can be eternal and reaches well beyond the grave. Instead of sad it makes me quite happy.
Thanks very much for sharing.

Very poignant Tim. That last line did me in, but in its sadness lies the message that love perhaps is eternal..
Another really great piece..

Yes a bit sad but as the others have said love can be eternal...
I am with Def, the last line got me

This is achingly beautiful, both the painful loss of separation from your beloved and the enduring bond of love.
I had to read through twice before my befuddled brain recognized the truth of what you gifted us. After the first I knew there was something I did not see ... that last line spoke of more. As I read it again a voice came to me and my heart dropped at the longing of the one left behind. I weep for him for he does not know how near his beloved lingers ... if but only a touch.

Thank you tim

Wow!!! I can see someone sitting on their balcony, drinking some refreshment and thinking back their Love Life... Its so sad that, it was just a memory now; for them.

I liked it Tim2. I liked it... :)

Oh, god, Tim, I got bushwhacked by this. So sad, so melancholy. I ache with the grief and the unhappiness left for me to live with.

Thank you very much. In my head it was the old house, older man alone, missing his love, but knowing he was there somehow. Keeping the ashes at home, I think I'd have to myself,to me it would be a comfort. Thank you for reading and your comments. I appreciate it very much.

I won't try to explain how or why, but this poem immediately reminded me of the art of Edward Gorey. The setting, the careful lay out of details like the creaky hinge and musty settee conjures up a nether world that leaves us wondering – especially why no 'soft touch' will be coming. And then, like a classic murder mystery book, the answer is revealed only at the end, and here, only with the very final word.

I love it; I think it's brilliant.

Hey tim
Like Dugh, I read this more than once...alright it took me three times...to really see what the words were saying.
Love is strong and enduring...but what terrible sadness can sometimes be the price. Then again, to have known such love makes one lucky too.
As always, nicely done.

You painted a picture, tim. I immediately read between the lines... that soft touch would come one day soon, when they were reunited, so the sadness was balanced with hope, and the knowledge that his love was watching over him in the meantime. Gary.

Hi Def, perhaps it is, I don't know but I think it's a comfort to many to think or hope that's the case. Thank you for readiing and for your thoughtful comments.

thank you dugh. a lot people wonder if there's more than this life. Personally I don't think so. If there is, I think maybe the ones left behind are luckier. Not so sure being the spirit, unable to touch or communicate would be a good thing.

Oh i often have to read poems more than once. They are sometimes like code and i have let them percolate for awhile before they give me a clear message. Yes, thats the thing about loving someone, usually one is left alone. I think that's why id keep the urn at home, to me it would be a comfort.

Thanks for reading and your support.. I appreciate it.

Daring to love means risking to lose. Still, the rewards are so great it's worth it. And as your poem hints, does it ever end?

Very beautiful poem.

Very beautiful poem.

Thank you so much, Pup. I appreciate you reading this and your interesting and insightful comments. I think to truly choose to love someone, is the work of the brave, because you have to put so much of yourself into it. It's a big risk, but you're right, so worth it.

Thank you again.
