The Boot - Three Years On - 7. Chapter 7
For Jim and Beccy the day was like most other days with the exception that they had Jason tagging along, they had made a promise and were keeping an eye on him. Sticking with their usual routine they did the rounds of a few charity shops and other shops that bought and sold second hand electrical goods. Checking the bins that had been filled with items deemed to be too far gone to be resold or faulty. Jim loved tinkering with what they found, sometimes being able to repair and clean them up to a good standard. This was how they made the small amount of money that they spent buying food or clothes, to them it was preferable to begging.
Chatting with Jason as they walked from one shop to another they were getting to know each other better and a friendship was starting to form. It turned out that like Jim, Jason liked to tinker with small mechanical and electrical stuff too. With that in common Jim and Jason spent a lot of the morning discussing the subject. When it transpired that Jason loved tinkering with mobile phones Jim told him that he had a box full of them stashed away but didn’t know what to do with them.
That sparked some interest in Jason. “Why do you keep them if you don’t know what to do with them?”
“Yeah, why do you hang on to them?” Beccy added.
Jim felt like he was under the spotlight and mumbled. “I dunno, I just do that’s all.”
“Can I have a look at them?” Jason was hopeful and felt like he needed to do something to help.
“I s’pose but why?”
“If its ok with you I can have a look and try to fix some of them, who knows maybe you could be sitting on your own little gold mine” Jason was smiling and had a twinkle in his eye.
Jim was taking too long thinking so Beccy spoke up, “Jim come on let him have a look what’s to lose if he can fix some maybe we could make more money, if he can’t we can just throw them away there’s no point holding on to them if we don’t do anything with them.”
“Alright let’s go I’ve got enough stuff here to check out anyway, but we need to figure out getting them charged up, I’ve got some chargers but I doubt I have enough of them.” Jim looked quizzically at Jason. “Do you really think you could repair some?”
“I don’t know till I see them, but like you said we need to get them charged up if they’ll charge and it will depend on what tools you’ve got that I can use. It’s surprising how often it’s something really simple and easy to fix and it’s possible to use parts from a few to fix one or two others.” Jason looked like he was getting really energized. “Do you think there is any chance of being able to get them charged?”
“Yeah, come on let’s get a move on if we get back to The Boot early enough I can ask Jeff, he’s usually pretty good and lets me checkout the stuff I try fixing. In fact that’s how come we have a stereo and a DVD player in the lounge, I fixed them and gave them to The Boot when Jeff brought in the tele. Beccy there’s no need for you to walk all that way with us, why don’t you go to The Boot and wait for us there you should be taking it easy, we won’t be long and I’ll look after Jason.” There was a sense of pride in Jim’s voice as he spoke. Beccy agreed and giving Jim a kiss on the cheek she turned toward The Boot. Jim’s eyes followed her with love before he started walking faster to get to his hidden stash.
As they passed Manchester Piccadilly train station Jason thought they were going to Piccadilly Gardens, but just past the train station Jim led them down a couple of side streets before turning into a car park. Jim stopped and looked around, he couldn’t see anyone, motioning for Jason to follow he quickly made his way to an overgrown bush in the far corner. Behind the bush was an opening in the chain link fence, this led them to the side of the canal, Jason followed Jim until he stopped under the nearby bridge.
Here Jim spoke. “Not far now it’s just the other side of the bridge, with all of the building going on I need to find somewhere else to keep this stuff, it’s getting too risky coming here.”
Coming out the other side Jim stuck close to side of the bridge and slid behind a bush, behind it was a small opening in the side of the bridge, the cold and darkness made it seem eerie. Jim reached out to an unseen ledge picking up a battery operated lantern that he kept there. At first the light was blinding when the lantern was turned on, slowly their eyes adjusted. Jason soon realised that the space was about 6 feet wide and twelve feet long, being cold and damp it held an eerie and unwelcoming atmosphere.
Jason shivered as he spoke. “It’s a good size but I think I can tell why you don’t stay here.” Spotting a couple of boxes and other items in one corner he asked, “Are those your things over there?”
“Yep let’s have a look and you can pick out a few phones to check out later.”
As Jason rummaged through the first box he noticed that most of the phones looked to be in good condition, but looks can deceiving, others had obvious signs of damage. He picked out seven that all looked to be the same make and model but in this light he couldn’t be one hundred percent sure.
He looked up when Jim asked, “Are you any good with laptops? I’ve got a few in this box.”
Looking them over Jason spotted two that were the same and a third that was the same make but a different model. He put them all into a case that originally held one of them, luckily they all had the charger leads with them. Going back to the first box he found a few chargers that fit the phones and put them with the laptops.
“I’ve picked out some to work on now I need some tools, have you got any here or are they some place else?” He knew that they wouldn’t be working on them here and was thankful of that.
“Jeff keeps them in his office for me, do you want to head back to The Boot and see what we can do?” Although it was only early afternoon Jim knew that if nothing else he could ask about trying to put charge into some of the phones and maybe one or two of the laptops.
Twenty five minutes later they were back at The Boot after meeting Beccy and Jim was allowed access to the walk in closet that Jeff let him use as a work room. Due to the limited number of electrical sockets they could only set three phones and one laptop up ready to charge, they hoped they were lucky. After setting them up they left to return later as the day time team were ready to lock up.

Kevin opened the bedroom door with two mugs of tea in his hands, the door banged as it hit the wardrobe having his hands full he couldn’t stop it. Ian groaned and rolled over, briefly opening his eyes before closing them again in search of more sleep.
“Oh no you don’t, it’s time to wake up we’ve got a lot to do.” Sounding serious Kevin still had a smile on his face as he approached the bed. “Come on babe we have lot’s to do before going to see Pop.”
Opening one eye Ian said, “You know you have lousy timing don’t you?”
Kevin leaned over to kiss his boyfriend, “You know I wouldn’t wake you if it wasn’t important,” another kiss, “Pop needs us and we still have to pick up a few bits for him.”
“I know and I promise as soon as I drink this gorgeous cup of tea that a really cute good looking sexy guy made me I’ll get ready.” Ian had one of those playful looks in his eye.
“Oh yeah and just who would that be then?” Kevin was playing along, he loved it when Ian woke up in one of his playful moods.
Ian had a wicked smile on his face, “Hmmm I’m not sure I can remember his name but he is so sexy, in fact I was just dreaming about him. You know if we had time I’d show you the dream I was having.”
“Show me eh, you’ve told me about some of your dreams but you’ve never shown me before. Come to think of it I’ve never been shown a dream before by anyone.” Kevin guessed where this leading, it was impossible not to notice the ‘tent’ in the bed.
Suddenly they were disturbed by the theme tune from 'Friends', Kevin’s phone was ringing and they knew it was John calling. The ‘tent’ in the bed went down as Kevin answered the phone, Ian could only hear half of the conversation.
“Hi.” Silence. “Yeah we’re going into town first once Ian’s out of bed.” Silence again. “Of course you can come with us, we’re going to pick some stuff up for Pop and grab a burger before going to the hospital.” More silence. “You’re where? Down stairs, well come up and we can all go from here.” That silence again. “Ok see you in five,” and Kevin hung up.
“I get the message I’m going for a shower.” Ian jumped out of bed, there was no sign of what caused the ‘tent’, that moment had passed. “I’ll show you that dream later.” Giving his boyfriend a quick kiss Ian ran to the bathroom.
Fifteen minutes later all three men left the apartment and headed for Manchester Arndale Centre. After making their purchases they went to eat in the food court before making their way to the hospital.
