Over & Under, A1

Over & Under , A1

(A Ben's Bumblings Blog)

I have around 1/3rd of the way to go in terms of completing my first (non-collab) multichapter story (and many thanks to @chris191070 for the multi-chapter collaborations, as I gained more practice with getting more than one chapter out at a time through them. Not to mention they were great fun to work on together). I've said it before and I'll say it again, my passion project took a village. You'll see just how many amazing folks had a hand in helping me once I complete it and give it a final edit.

But this blog isn't about my work, it's about the work of others!

With each "deep dive," some members like @centexhairysub and myself bemoan being unable to read as many stories as we'd like

(namely, all of them... just all of them)

It's both inspiring and daunting to "dive in" to read so many amazing stories at once.

So, I decided to grab a story from several genres of the deep dives, randomize them, and make myself a reading list.

So, here is the Randomized Reading List for my first Over & Under Blog:

The Case of the Short Short Prince by @Geron Kees

The Closing Act by @Arch Hunter

Friends First by @Renee Stevens

Primal Park by @astone2292 & @Yeoldebard

Aussie Pioneers by @quokka

Begin Again by @Tony S.

Wicked Games by @CasualWanderer82

Self-Help by @northie

The Exchange Students by @Mark Paren

All WET Series by @Myr

Curing Humanity by @Wayne Gray

Timber Pack Chronicles by @Rob Colton

Calliope's Carousel by @Parker Owens

Crave by @LitLover

The King's Mate Series by @Aditus

Detective Saggio Series by @Lee Wilson

I will return with part A2 of my blog at some unforeseen time after I've finished reading the first half or so of the list to share my thoughts.

(some are series and, thus, will take longer)

While some of my friends are behind, I know for a fact that I've personally only scratched the surface when it comes to reading (other than events, as they are very shiny and distracting).

I’m honored to be included. Even though mine is a series, the 6 stories are probably cumulatively shorter than some single chapters on your list. I wait patiently for your feedback on the series as a whole. I believe you’ve read a couple of them already; #1 for sure, but it was initially a secret author entry, so you (probably) didn’t know it was mine when you read it.

Can’t wait to hear your feedback on the rest. Like you, I can’t find enough time to read more than a couple stories at a time. I seem to constantly run across long ones.

Everything is manageable if you keep track of it. You just have to commit to keeping track. That's why, if I began your Saggio Series, I haven't finished or continued it, and that's why I am sure I have several multi-chaptered works in my reading history list that I have to go back and finish. My problems:

* ADHD

* Reading during lunch at work, getting interrupted, and never pulling the story back up again

* Reading at a snail's pace

* Immediately forgetting what I read a chapter ago (that's why my comments are so meticulous most of the time)

I need to do something like this, but every time I make a list, life seems to get in the way, and I have to put it aside for something else that is supposedly more important, not sure it is, of course, one has to work for food, insurance, etc...

Keep us posted.

I have that problem too. Although it does make reading things over again like a Foreigner song, Feels Like The First Time.

Believe me, my friend, I feel you there. That's why I made this blog. Not only does it help keep myself accountable, I don't feel any guilt overlooking someone's entry, as it's what random.org spit out, AND I have all of the links in one place.  😂 If this method works well, I'll keep it going, the whole alphabet, A- Z. 🤣

I'm humbled and honored by the mention. Curious choice among my collection as it's (no doubt) my most controversial project. But honored, regardless. Amazing initiative. I feel like I should follow your lead.

The story was 100% grabbed at random from that genre. I took the deep dive lists and randomized them and yours happened to be the first to come up during this round. I actually can hardly wait to read it.

Yours was one of the ones where the story that came up on the randomizer was part of a series, so I decided the series as a whole was the pick. I couldn't exactly read book 2 before book 1. 😅

Ben said this above. Saved a list and let the tool do its job.

Interesting idea @BendtedWreath, I’m curious - how did you choose the stories? Was it a bit of “eenie, meenie…” or something more deliberate? 😁

I’ve read at least one story from each of the authors you mentioned, and for one of them I’ve read literally everything they’ve published here on GA. That’s partly why I’m so interested in your selections - because for most of the authors on your list, the story you picked wouldn’t have been my first recommendation.

With the possible exception of @Rob Colton —his Timber Pack Chronicles is a classic. It was actually the first shifter story I ever read, and it sparked my love for the genre, which I later expanded with works from @kbois@WolfM, @astone2292 and more recently, @Laura S. Fox.

You chose poems from @Parker Owens but if you ever feel like trying one of his novels, I’d strongly recommend A to Z. It’s another GA classic - an absolute must-read.

@Wayne Gray's Curing Humanity is one of his newer stories and definitely a great read, but I’d still suggest starting with his masterpiece, Ash and Ember.

As for @LitLover - another author who’s no longer active on GA - my first pick would be Unforgivable. It’s a different genre (romance), but a very good novel.

For @Arch Hunter, I’d go with Dark Star. It’s one of those high school coming-out stories that really stands out instead of blending into the crowd of similar works.

I saved @CasualWanderer82 for last, since he’s already said plenty about Wicked Games. Should I recommend something else? Honestly, I’m not sure - I’m one of those readers who’s gone through everything he’s written.

I could, probably, go on but...I'm eagerly waiting to see your A2 list! 😁

Cane, thank you so very much for these recommendations!!

As for the list in this blog, I randomized the lists from different genres in the deep dive posts (the more recent pull, the 9's). They are just a start, as I have hopes to keep going and slowly catch up. But that is why there is that one poem that made its way in there. 😆

With the number of stories i have reviewed from many fantastic authors, I would struggle with creating something like this.

Enjoy your reading Ben.

Ooooo I'm tickled pink you chose "Primal Park," as it was a lovely collab project with Yeoldebard. I can't wait to hear your thoughts 💜

You are also a much faster reader than I am. I don't know how much was naturally developed or if you worked on your reading speed over the years, but it's impressive.

I was a fast reader in my youth, but have slowed down considerably with age.  It's frustrating sometimes to not be able to read as much as I would like but I have also found that I enjoy the reading itself much more when I slow down.  Sometime I just find a really nice description or phrase and just read it again out of appreciation.
