One Hundred and Fifty-Five Sonnets - 49. Halloween

.

Sonnet No. 97

The way you could not hold my gaze confirms

That there is something wrong, but how to guess

Your reticence is the proof that affirms

Your caring for me is under duress.

The sadness that I can see, and the fear;

The way your eyes dart, and your hand takes mine;

Cannot prepare me for what I'll hear,

When you timidly ask, if I am fine.

My fever caused you more stress than I thought,

And in the hollow of your eyes I see

Halfway between hope and fear you are caught,

For without me, you don’t know how you'd be.

Hand in hand; hold my eye and I'll tell you:

Leave you is the one thing I'll never do.

Sonnet No. 98

You paused during the Halloween party,

And with the white face paint not able to hide

Your darkness from the swirl of activity,

You leaned on a doorframe, and wished me by your side.

But for me you should not have spoiled your fun,

Though I know it was for but a moment –

Your sparkling thought bears no comparison

When you can gift me with such a bestowment.

And so you rose and rejoined your group again,

A little bit wiser; a bit relieved,

For the refreshment you crave will be there when

The bare idea of my love is conceived.

Lean on me when you feel the most alone,

And my strength will be there for you to intone.

In each of these two sonnets, you help us see the fear present in one newly beloved, and one who is insecure, unable to believe in that love completely. Your observations of subtle body language - a movement of the eyes, a quality of voice, a brief squeeze of the hand - tell us quite as much as a prosy story might.  However, these are far more elegant. Thank you for sharing these. They are quite beautiful.
