One Hundred and Fifty-Five Sonnets - 28. "...inscrutable like the Sphinx"
.
Sonnet No. 55
Tonight the blue sky is candied with clouds,
Which a sultry light wind blows to the east –
And in these vapors on the move are shrouds,
Sailing my affections on to your feast.
For I send along with them my sentiment
To seek you out in the lands that will be
Touched by morning's amber light occident
Long before it has a chance to see me.
If, when it finds you, my dearest young man,
Do not be surprised at how on your cheek
The clouds and dark azure meridian
Plant my kiss and strongly for me bespeak.
Chase the dawn, oh my love, and find the boy;
Lay him low with beauty, and my charms deploy.
Sonnet No. 56
You are like the automobiles of old;
Running deep, inscrutable like the Sphinx,
You purr through your smile, and do not withhold
Your claws that are as sharp as any lynx.
I am grateful I'm pet to your tiger,
And can run my hands from ears to your tail –
To feel your spine stiffen in sheer pleasure,
As amused snarls from your curled lips exhale.
You as my love are powerful and sleek,
A continual alertness in rest
That none can challenge, but we who are meek
Can have the thrill of stroking your wise breast.
Riding in front of all is your mascot;
Feline-proud, lovely and fiery hot.
