One Hundred and Fifty-Five Sonnets - 57. Songs Without Words

.

Sonnet No. 113[1]

Mendelssohn wrote his lovely Songs without Words,

Where harmony alone carries content –

And this vibe from a cold sleep came by thirds

To wake with its pulse by ardent intent.

Sometimes feeling alone is the message,

And word following word just lets it flow;

Like a fugue, both on fire and on edge,

One must let it work, so that it may go.

If melody in this is allowed to sing,

Lyrics or not, there's one theme keeps the time,

And maybe to some, it alone is the thing

That justifies art, and this paltry rhyme.

For love of you, I trade sleep for impression

And the beat of heart seeking expression.

Sonnet No. 114

I would like some feedback on this effort –

Not from you, dear boy, for you I know I please,

But from others I find I crave report

That my fire in their chill heart can play and tease.

For warmth between humans is connection,

And without it, the divine spark we have

Glints cold and distant with no relation

To ache in pain without that healing salve.

So I would seek, dear boy, to know if they care,

And have a sentiment as real as this –

For if not, they do not hunt it anywhere,

If not in how I feel about you, Tony.

This burns so that human hearts may kindle

A passion like ours not meant to dwindle.

Let me be the first to report, your art in these lines stirs my spirit to joy. These two   testify to the delight we can share in one another, and how that spreads beyond our own flesh-and-blood borders to everyone else. Thank you.

another pair that are so wonderful!

113 caused me to have to google a lot of those things, but i'm glad i did! it's really beautiful!

114, just so you know, your words always stir me.

But from others I find I crave report

That my fire in their chill heart can play and tease.

For warmth between humans is connection,

we've not met in person, but through your words i feel i know something about you. things that people you do know in person may not even know, and i feel privileged that you have shared this part of you, with us.

Thank you for this, Parker. I like the turn of phrase "flesh and blood borders," I may use that in a poem one day :)
