One Hundred and Fifty-Five Sonnets - 6. glorious

.

Sonnet No. 11

Bobbing along the rays, your summer commends,

Like a hand raised to the currents of air,

That laughter and jokes among you and your friends

Will shake off inclement weather for fair.

Riding so, if in your fun's tumult,

A wayward grin should happen to slip –

An enigmatic; an inscrutable bolt;

A little gesture that plays on your lip –

Then your friends will see, but they won't know why.

The deep-rooted genesis of your smile

Frees your hand from the open car to fly

So your thoughts can be with me awhile.

Revel in the face of all that sunshine,

And make the summer jealous you are mine.

Sonnet No. 12

Hopelessly I take what little you give,

And like the needle of a balance scale,

Shift between the calm and provocative –

But then, you're under me in stunning detail.

Your whole body in motion – a ballet

Racked and contorted in pain and pleasure –

Your closed eyes open on mine, as if to say:

"Your love's more to me than I can endure."

So then, in that movingly simple thought,

My wrong doubts vanish and I am returned

To the equal poise tween which I am caught –

Half way mad, feeling half-way loved and spurned.

But later, rest with all my love your pillow,

And I will weigh me out in your pleasure's glow.

Each one more romantic and sensual than the last...A summer jealous? What a metaphor! I love the way your sonnets pivot toward the end of the verses, not in the middle or at the beginning.

These are both glorious! And you have successfully made me envious of the recipient of these wonderful sonnets!

And make the summer jealous you are mine.
Loved that line... I had to read the sonnet over just to get to it again!

Glorious indeed, they both were..

As others already mentioned the jealous summer, I was captivated by the deep-rooted genesis of your smile. A smile that is just another smile for friends, but can mean so much more between lovers. A smile saying: “remember last night?” for instance. Yet another gem.

I loved the image of the balance scale and how that balanced theme returns all through the poem, ending in I will weigh me out. It’s almost a visual vibration coming to a halt.

Thank you, Parker! It seems many have commented on the jealous summer allusion, and that brings a smile to my heart.

Thanks again for your support and kind words.

Thank you, Tim! I usually pull out a word or phrase from what I'm about to post to make it one of these poetry chapter headings, but reading these two over for a final time before uploading, I thought they were pretty glorious…so, it became the heading.

Thanks again for your support and feedback.

Thank you, Defiance19, for a great review! It's a wonderful compliment to hear you re-read Sonnet No. 11 just to get to the couplet again! That's amazing, and so is your support of my work. I appreciate it immensely.

Thank you, Peter! Your take on No. 12 is beautiful; the concept of visual vibrations stuns me (in a great way!). Thank you also for 'feeling' No. 11 right at its core. And incidentally, sunlight and gems become a recurring theme in these sonnets. Perhaps they started here, with this poem.

All my best, Peter.
